Hey guys, so the first thing I want to talk about is conserving your energy. Here are a few tricks to help you with this so that you have the strength and energy to ride faster for longer. First things first, we need to save our upper body. Our legs are stronger so we need to let them do most of the work. I like to squeeze the bike with my legs when I’m charging to conserve my upper body. This can be helpful when you’re climbing, when you’re hard on the throttle, when you’re going through rough terrain at high speeds, and even when you’re braking. Here is some footage of me during a desert race where I had to remind myself to relax my upper body. It’s really easy to start death gripping with your arms when you’re under pressure. You can also get your upper body up over the bars when you’re hard on the throttle to reduce the strain on your arms.
This next one is a big one. You need to look ahead. I’m talking multiple bike lengths ahead. Getting in this habit is going to make you a faster rider because you’re going to be able to react more quickly to terrain coming your way. Not only will it give you a bigger window to react, but it’s also going to help you not do things like this when it comes to ruts, and it’s going to help you with climbing hills and choosing good lines.
So this brings me to the next tip. Reading the terrain and picking good lines is a huge part of being fast in the trails. When I’m not out specifically working on technical skills, I’m looking ahead and picking the smoothest lines. It could be as simple as taking the high line over these two big roots. Another thing to look for when choosing your line is kickers! A kicker is basically anything out on the trail that can help get you over an obstacle or make for a smoother ride. In this video I’m using small logs and roots to kick me over other obstacles rather than bumping over them.
Thanks for watching my friends! Head on over to my Patreon page and become a supporter to see all sorts of unreleased footage!

I also tend to have kind of a mantra to say to myself while I ride. Also tried an idea I picked from a mtn biking channel. Sing while you ride. It will relax you, get you out of your head. Just...be careful to not get too worked up into the song...or you may get introduced to a tree....

Nice to see a girl riding with such skills and also making very informative videos ! I'm an old endurist ( my first race was in1975.. the last one in 2010 ), and I remember that time where no-one girl was riding motorbike, then appears some girls, not very skilled, and then real competitors girls.. And It was nice to see those girls very fast, and , for some of them faster than most of the men ! ( I remember to have had to "fight" in a special with a very quick girl.. I won, but it was very hot !😅) Anyway,bravo for your skills, and your vidéos, nice to watch !

Took some of your instruction to Metcalff Park on Saturday. Rode hard, jumped some big logs (thank you!!!) pulled some little wheelies, got a little cute and decided to look down into the creek bed while going to fast on single track. LOL, scuffy arm and sore hands today. Still had a great time riding with my friends. I would of not tried all this new stuff without instruction and inspiration from your videos. thanks much!!!

At the beginning of the vid, whooped out single track. One more gear Megs, (if you know the trail pretty good), and it gets faster, (of course), smoother and less spent energy IMO. That is what I figured out in some whooped out single track in Michigan. I love those natural bike made whoops. :)

@megs_braap, what do you do when you look ahead but notice something rather close as a pit hole, some rock or something that needs your attention to either get over it, not ride over or whatever? I'm asking this because I seem to get a lot of such "distractions" which bring my vision back "closer" rather than looking far ahead and this messes up my speed and I'm not sure how to deal with that. Do I just ignore it and hope my peripheral vision is enough to deal with these "nuances" in front of me on the trail?
@megs_braap
@megs_braap Жыл бұрын
As a general rule, when looking ahead, we’ll see anything that could potentially be an issue. You won’t usually miss something important that will actually be an issue. It sounds crazy but yes, if you stop focusing on the little roots, rocks, and bumps right in front of you, you’ll be amazed and how little they effect your riding.
@RadekSkylark
@RadekSkylark Жыл бұрын
@@megs_braap As I've progressed and understood the importance of looking ahead I started practicing somewhat similarly to track racing (motogp, etc), essentially, as I'm coming of a turn I'm already searching with my eyes for the next turn or other "big" obstacle that will "force" me to lower my speed (this way I know how much of a distance I have to accelerate/brake). Do you do this the same or do you "look" for something else ahead when you come out of a "turn"? I'm not sure I made myself clear enough in the original comment - I'm not worried that I'll miss something important, the problem I seem to have is that when I come out of a turn and find the next "obstacle/turn" with my eyesight I also notice, for example, a little tree trunk few meters ahead, or a gnarly tree root, etc., and my eyesight immediately catches onto these "things" which causes me to loose speed. For example, if otherwise I would have a 50m rather straight trail in front of me to accelerate it suddenly reduces to few 10m straights between these small "obstacles" I try to maneuver around. I'm just not sure is this OK and it is the same for everyone or am I doing something incorrect with my eyesight. So, would you still say that the "key" is just to force yourself not to focus on these small "things" and let my peripheral vision take care of it (the thing is I don't feel like it will).? P.S. Sorry for explaining it once more if you understood me well enough from the initial post...
@megs_braap
@megs_braap Жыл бұрын
@@RadekSkylark Okay I think I understand what you’re saying. It sounds like it might be as simple as getting comfortable riding through those little obstacles you’re focusing. If these little, but bothersome roots and rocks become things that you’re super comfortable powering through, you’ll stop noticing them as much, and even when you do notice them, they shouldn’t slow you down. A great way to practice this is to start focusing on taking all the worst lines! I know this sounds horrible haha but it’ll 100% make you a better rider.
@RadekSkylark
