I was a scout for years and I went camping in the snow and rain many times and always hated it. After watching your video I now realize that we were doing it totally incorrectly and that it didn't have to be so miserable. I'm actually tempted to give it another shot after not camping for almost a decade....

I've always wanted to try hot tenting, but you can't watch the snow fall from inside your cozy tent. That's why I like to set up a tarp to sit under, get a fire going, and sip wiskey as the snow piles up. Add an audio book and I'm in heaven.

@cobbler88
@cobbler88 5 жыл бұрын
@@rbeck3200tb40 Right? The whole thing (although I did some skipping) I was wondering ... is he just camping for camping's sake? Granted, I missed some dialogue, but it appears that he set up camp, left a bunch of stuff outside the tent, then did nothing but sleep, cook and process wood. That's fine if you're looking to get away, but I really need more to occupy my time than that. But, points for it simply showing that a person can survive out there if they have the right equipment. I was also wondering how warm it actually got in the tent. It SEEMED cozy and that's the impression we were given, but wouldn't all that gear sitting on snow inside the tent get wet if the stove was warming things up to anything above about 40-45 degrees?

Do you need to open the window for carbon monoxide?
@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 жыл бұрын
@@leochiu5972 Not really. The stove is vented and the shelter has not floor. In fact there is also a gap in the stove jack and a window can be made up near the peak using pull cords setup for that. However said on startup I will often open the door till the stove gets hot and drafts good. Without the pipe venting the combustion it would be dangerous for sure. It's the roll up pipe which makes this possible. Even smaller and more UL than nesting pipe. Thanks for watching.
@cobbler88
@cobbler88 5 жыл бұрын
@@rucksackransack I was wondering the same thing. With all that gear sitting in the snow, wouldn't things start getting a little wet once things got above about 40-45 degrees? The fire gave the impression of warmth, but I'm not so sure it was as warm as we're imagining it.

One trick I learned for faster sawing is only going 1/2 or 3/4 of the way through the branch about every 12”, or however long you need. Then, I’ll just feed one end over the ground branch, stomping the it with my foot to break it off. Saves a ton of time and energy. Anyway, I like your style.
@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 жыл бұрын
I have done that as well on other outings and you're 100% correct. The down side is with some wood it will splinter leaving one length longer than the other. Seems to happen with this witch hazel but not with every type of wood. This can be a problem for a small firebox as the longer piece won't fit. I try to cut them as long as possible to save work. However lots of wood will just breaks down the cut and this saves work as you stated. Just depends on the wood but yea. The method you described at times is good! Thanks for watching!

Just a word of advice that I learned when I was camping as a Boy Scout: When you fill your water from a stream like that, turn your bottle/container around so the opening is downstream from the bottom of the bottle. This way, debris and small particulate junk is less likely to find it's way inside. Then turn it back around and top it up like normal if it doesn't fill that way. Great video!

I love in British Columbia and am a hobbyist expedition camper... I love hiking for days until I decide "Yup this will do"... You have to be extremely fit and healthy, but nothing beats being out in the bush.. Especially in the Pacific Northwest here, mountains, rainforest, grizzly bears, cougars.. In BC there are places so remote they can't be reached by vehicles.. That is where I love disappearing to for a week or so.. I have done it alone but after getting snowed in a old shack for 3 days, I always travel with a partner now... I'm getting one of these tents

Enjoyed the video. Amusing as a 30 year backpacker, exploring the GW National Forest and various wilderness areas in West Virginia. The stove is particularly cool. Wanted to say when your Sawvivor Saw blade wears out (and you can't buy the blades anymore) look to buy a $30 Coughlans Folding Saw, a triangular saw that kicks butt, and most importantly doesn't use a proprietary blade, you can use a standard blade from Home Depot. Bought mine after my Sawvivor got dull, and it's folding design works really well. Found a stuff sack for it at a thrift store, meant for something else, as it doesn't come with one and you need it. Put a small piece of foam between the folded blade and the housing to stop it from rattling in your pack. Happy trails, keep it up, and 15F is still pretty cold in my book, lol. Camped at 0F one time, not too fun.

Just after this outing (and after years of searching) I found this blade and it seems to work well for the Sawvivor. The 15 inch size is hard to find. www.amazon.com/Zippo-Outdoors-Woodsman-Replacement-Blades/dp/B00FPQR5S4/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_1?keywords=zippo+axesaw+blade&qid=1556811592&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmrnull

Now that is what I call camping in the winter! I did this once a few years ago with spring trail gear. Needless to say not the best gear. My buddy failed to tell that there was still snow up in the mountains during March, so yeah I was under prepared. On my part I should've realized that simple fact. But hey a couple sausages, potatoes, some good brew, and a warm fire and the camp was golden. Just had to layer up a lot. Since then my preparation and gear has improved greatly. Think I'll take the motorbike up to the mountains for a little camp out this weekend now.

Awesome video once again brother. The tent and stove are awesome as well. Always look forward to the videos. We are in for another possible 20-30cms of snow this weekend making travel in the forest very hard. Well over 100cms+ of snow, had 0c today (Feb 21) and then deep freeze -27c Sunday night to freeze things solid. Late brother and have a great weekend....Cheers Fred

A delightful video!!! Showing how it's done!! would suggest one thing, you might get a Mylar blanket...really cheap and light to more expensive and heavier, but all do the same thing, at like 15 below or simply cold, put it on top of your sleeping bag, and it will feel like an electric blanket!! Reflects 80% of your body heat back to you!!

@@mrtqtran Not all bears hibernate the same length of time. Some can wake early. It depends on the sex of the bear, whether or not they have cubs, etc. I'm not sure when (or where, honestly) this was filmed but it was uploaded in Feb. There HAVE been a few deaths by bear attack in the month of Feb. That being said--my comment was in jest.

buy a roll of plastic sheeting, you can get it at WalMart/Home Depot,etc.. cut several pieces and use as a "floor" inside the tent. it'll keep the moisture off of ya ... that stove is great! i gotta get one...

For me the Tyvek under my sleeping area is good enough as sit on a closed cell pad for hanging out. I don’t desire a total floor in my hot tent for various reasons. However have used the clear plastic sheet for a ground cloth under my hang out area for later season hot tenting as seen in this video so agree it can be useful kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hsyCe8x6y9TWcWg.html

Suggestions for winter, 1. Keep a lil bit of brandy in a flask, on u at all times, not beer or vodka, two sips n ud be mighty warm.. 2. Attach a 5v aluminum fan to the side of ur stove, powered by the solar panel (during day) to burn ur wood properly to ash 3. Place a flat rock under ur stove to make it more stable during night.. Or attach 2 wooden pieces under ur stove as slides if the stove stands on solid snow ground.

The stove helps dry out the air. In extreme cold the walls can have a frost line which is often equal to the level of the stove. In wet conditions say just above freezing without a liner and the stove not running condensation can develop.
