10 жыл бұрынGhazal is a poetic form consisting of rhyming couplets. Mehdi Hassan and Ghulam Ali are considered as two of the most famous ghazal singers of all times. This compilation “Ghazal- For the First Time Together-VOL-1” is a rare recording of ghazals sung by the two maestros on the same stage. This is Mehdi Hassan & Ghulam Ali Live First time.
Ghazal is an ancient form of music originating in the 6th century Arabic verses. Ghazals came to South Asia through the Sufi mystics and the new Islamic Sultanate. Initially the poetry which was Urdu shayeri and the language used in Ghazals were of a very high standard and demanded an erudite listenership. But gradually it evolved into more popular formats to attain mass listenership. Gradually these urdu songs often shifted from the classical background it was based from.
This particular album has two of the most noted Ghazal ustads singing together in a concert. The first artist is Mehdi Hassan who is fondly known as the Ghazal King. Mehdi Hassan was born in Rajasthan in India but his family along with him moved to Pakistan after partition. Mehdi Hassan is well known for his typical style of singing which infused Thumri, Khayal, Dadra, Dhrupad all the genres. Mehdi Hassan was known for creating atmospheric effects through his singing. Mehdi Hassan was also a noted playback singer and sang for lot of films. In this live album he has sung one very popular Ghazal “Ranjish Hi Sahi”. The taankari and voice modulation in this song is almost unbelievable.
The other noted Ghazal artist in this album is Ghulam Ali. Ghulam Ali was born in Punjab district of British India which is now in Pakistan. He is often mistaken with the legendary Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Sahib of whom he was a disciple. He is fondly known as chhote Ghulam Ali. Ghulam Ali started his playback career with B.R. Chopra’s film Nikaah which released in 1982. He is quite a popular singer in the entire South Asian Diaspora. In this album Ghulam Ali has sung some very popular Ghazals one of which is “Baharon Ko Chaman Yaad”. This one is a typical soulful Ghulam Ali rendition. This album is a rare collection of ghazals and historically unique because it is Mehdi Hassan Ghulam Ali Live First time.

Those who dislike this ghazal ( " Ranjish Hi Sahi" penned by Ahmed Faraz Saab with music composed by Nissar Bazmi Saab) may either have no music sense or they don't have a knack for good music! The singing style of the great Mehdi Hasan Saab or for that matter, any other singer can't be bad simply because it doesn't suit the taste of a particular listener ! It's not fair to cast aspersions or pass any disparaging remark on something which is not within someone's grasp.or beyond someone's comprehension ! Perhaps, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab was absolutely right in his assessment that no one else can ever compete with the great Mehdi Hassan Saab in so far as his control over Sur was concerned ! The great Lata Mangeshkar, who held the great Mehdi Hassan Saab in very high esteem, use to say --- "GOD resides in the voice of Mehdi Hassan Saab" ! Does the great Mehdi Hassan Saab require any other complement from any quarter regarding his singing attributes ; and the least from a novice like you or me ! As a matter of fact, only a Living Legend like Latajee could realise the greatness of a Legend In His Lifetime like the great Mehdi Hassan Saab ! Let us bow our head in reverence to this great legendary singer and gem of a person for his impeccable track record and stupendous contributions to the World Of Music! The great Mehdi Hassan Saab was the Numero Uno in every facet of the Hindustani Film Music -- be it Alaap, Swargam, or Loykari - in so far as Ghazal Gayiki is concerned ! He had given Ghazal Gayiki a pedestal, which will be be difficult to surpass ! Perhaps, a legend can truly realize the greatness of an another legend ! How right was the great Lataji in her assessment of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab in saying - "GOD resides in the voice of Mehdi Hassan Saab !" Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab went on to say - "No one can ever compete with Mehdi Hassan Saab, in so far as his control over 'Sur' was concerned !"

When you listen to Mehedi Hassan and Gulam Ali., You forget the world. I don't think the world will ever produce such Gems. I am one of the fortunate person (with my wife) who listen Mehdi Hasan during his fist performance in India.

The great Mehdi Hassan Saab was neither an Indian or Pakistani nor a Hindu or a Muslim ! He was Indian in as much as he was a Pakistani ! The great Khan Saab belonged to the entire world and infact, its Prized Possession ! He was the Brightest Jewel in the World Of Ghazal Gayiki and indeed, its Crowning Glory ! The great Mehdi Hassan Saab was the Ghazal Sensation of the Century and Beyond ! He had given Ghazal Gayiki a pedestal, which will be very difficult to surpass ! The great Mehdi Hassan Saab had originally hailed from a small hamlet - called 'Luna' - in the district of 'Jhunjhunu' - under the state of Rajasthan(India), wherein sixteen generations of his family of the traditional musicians( locally called 'Kalawant') lived ! Following the partition of the country, the great Khan Saab had migrated to Pakistani in 1947, along with his parents, wherein he stayed till his sad demise in 2012 ! Such a resourceful musician will ever tread this path again in the world !

Here, in this ghazal (Ranjish Hi Sahi Dil Dukhane Ke Liye Aa). the great Mehdi Hassan Saab had proved beyond reasonable doubt as to why and how he is the finest exponent of ghazal gayiki ever ! In this ghazal, Alaap in both low and high notes and Andolan in Madhyam Kalyan was a treat to listen again and again! Perhaps, this SUR SAMRAT had garnered the maximum in his quest for excellence in the SUR SAGAR through sheer hard work, perseverance and dedication so as to enthrall us with his wizardry for all time to come ! As a matter of fact, I am virtually running short of words in my vocabulary to explain the greatness of this wonderful exponent of ghazal gayiki! Perhaps, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab was absolutely infallible as a singer and no epithet is sufficient to describe the divine abilities of this multidimensional talent ! What separated the great Mehdi Hassan Saab from the rest of the ghazal singers was the inimitable style of his gayiki and his GOD - GIFTED abilities in presenting the same with required depth,poise, calmness, and serenity, as per demand of the occasion ! It's not a prudent approach to compare between the equally God-gifted people. Both have geniuses in their own ways. Hail Ghulam Ali and Hail Mehdi Hassan! Each of them has the equal take on our sadness, each of them fulfills the aesthetic demand of the moments of our aloofness, derangement, depression and romanticism.

The great Mehdi Hassan Saab had given ghazal gayiki a pedestal, which will be very difficult to surpass ! After the sad demise of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab, the mantle of carrying forward this glorious journey has fallen squarely on Ustad Ghulam Ali Saab ! If memory serves, this concert was in Colden Center, Queens college, circa 1987. Very memorable. Woh ghazal ka daur tha. Very fond memories of that period!

Here, in this ghazal, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab had performed with his heart out raising the level of his gayiki to an epic proportion ! Professionalism, Perfection, and Sophistication in performance was the hallmark of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab ! His style of gayiki was very simple, soft, soothing, and soulful and overbearing but difficult to emulate ! Besides, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab had something divine in his voice which made him so special ! He had given ghazal gayiki a pedestal which will be difficult to surpass ! In this ghazal," Ranjish Hi Sahi'( lyric -- Ahmed Faraz Saab ; music -- Nissar Bazmi Saab) in 'Raag Emon Kalyan', the Alaap in both low and high notes was a treat to listen! What baffles one and all was -- the great Mehdi Hassan Saab's exemplary control over 'Shas'(breath) during the entire rendition and the ' Kharas' he had produced while performing Alaap! According to him, -- "Shas Nahin To Sur Nahin ; Shas Gane Ki Jaan Hain, Sach Pura Nahin Hota To Sur Pura Nahin Hota" and it's a great thing for an artist to come out with flying colours while performing 'Kharas'. The great Khan Saab had himself put this precept into practice in this ghazal! Further, the 'Andolon' he had brought in 'Madhyam Kalyan' during the rendition of this ghazal was worth listening! It proved beyond reasonable doubt -- how serious and sincere the great Mehdi Hassan Saab was in regard to the maintenance of perfect balance amongst Sur, Taal and Loy while performing! In the same breath, how uncompromising he was in respect of maintenance of purity of ragas In composition of his divine creations! Perhaps, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab was absolutely right in his assessment that no one could ever compete with the great Mehdi Hassan Saab in so far as his control over Sur is concerned! The ' 'Kharas' and 'Andolon' the great Khan Saab had brought in while performing this ghazal has kept me spellbound during the entire rendition and will continue to reverberate over a period of time. I have listened to it several times over in a single sitting but still the inner urge in my heart to listen to it remains insatiable! What kind of thirst it has been! The great Mehdi Hassan Saab was just irresistible as a singer! In fact, he was Numero Uno in every facet of ghazal gayiki -- Alaap, Swargam and Loykari! Perhaps, such a marvel will ever be born again in this World! Personally, I feel myself extremely lucky to have born during the lifetime of this great singer and gem of a person! This is Mehndi Hasan Sahib's nobility to describe Gulam Ali sahib as of same glory as of himself. But everybody knows that it is hard to find any classic singer even miles close to him.

Although not only I, but musicians themselves really believe when it comes to "Sur", Ghulam ali sahib is no where near Mehdi sheb's sur. When it comes to "le-kaar", of course Mehdi sahib is not as commanding as Ghulam ali sahib. But as you said Yunnis sheb, Both are freakin amazing!

l like gazal since my boyhood . I am a great fan in the name of gazal smart Mehadi Hassan. I remember the gazal Muhabat Karne walay and Rafta Rafta is the best ever played by Hassan shab. Nowadays Mehadi Hassan and Gulam Ali shabd is incredible in Gazal world. I always respect those, Hassan shab and Gulam Ali shab.

In this ghazal, the rendition of 'Alap' in low notes to high notes and vice -- versa, display of 'Kharas' and 'Andolon' in Madhyam Kalyan' were treats to listen to again and again ! It had a lasting impact on me compelling me to listen to it several times over in a single sitting ! Still, the inner urge in my heart to listen to it remains insatiable ! After listening to it carefully, one can very well comprehend the difference between the great Mehdi Hassan Saab and his contemporaries or juniors as also his worth - as an exponent of ghazal gayiki ! Perhaps, the benchmark the great Mehdi Hassan Saab had set for himself, in far as Ghazal Gayiki is concerned, will ever be surpassed !

Both of these giants of the Ghazal Gayiki contributed their mite in catapulting Ghazal Gayiki into its present level of much wider acceptance across the Globe ! While the great Mehdi Hassan Saab was instrumental in the revival, ascendence and further flourish of Ghazal Gayiki as a 'semi-classical music form' ; Ustad Ghulam Ali Saab has cemented its future ! Perhaps, there is absolutely no doubt over the fact that both are exceptionally brilliant and unique in their own right, in their own individual way, in the respective genres of music, for their exploits ! After the sad demise of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab, the mantle of carrying forward this Glorious Journey has fallen squarely on the safe shoulders of Ustad Ghulam Ali Saab ! We owe a lot to these giants of a singer for having enthralled us for decades with soulful music of very rich content --- Lafz, Sur, Taal and Loy and aesthetic value ! Today, the 13th June, is infact the 7th Death Anniversary of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab ! In the year 2012, precisely on this date, the great Khan Saab had left this world for his heavenly abode ! Our heartiest regards and tribute to him ! May the departed soul rest in eternal peace ! Let us hope and pray on this pious occasion !💝💝💝💐💐💐 It was as if the ROOH ( SPIRIT ) of the Ghazal Gayiki had gone with the sad demise of the great Khan Saab ! Personally speaking, I consider myself to be extremely fortunate to have born during the lifetime of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab ! Ghazal singing is no easy art of classic music. Mehdi Hassan' singing "Baat karni mujhey mushkil kabhi aisy tow naa thee"I is superb in this masterly performance. It portrays a true and a rare experience of true love that only a real lover can comprehend. This Ghazal translates into words that rare experience. The depth of love wrapped in this piece of poetry, only an educated mind can understand.

What makes the great Mehdi Hassan Saab so special was the fact that he had an uncanny ability of rendering the romantic and tragic nuances of URDO couplets with equal proficiency and with consummate ease ! Besides, the great Khan Saab had always excelled in selection of the right verses for his divine creations, the legends of the URDO poetry of the likes of the great Meer-Tak-E-Meer Saab, Mirza Ghalib Saab, His Excellency Bahadur Shah Zafar Saab, Iqbal Saab, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Ahmed Faraz Saab, Qatil Shifai Saab, and Shehzad Ahmed Saab, to name a few, were amongst his favourites! Further, his complete mastery over Sur, Taal and Loy had made all such creations absolute treats to listen! Clarity of pronounciation, depth and wide range, coupled with his inimitable style of gayiki, was the hallmark of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab! Perhaps, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab was absolutely right in his assessment that no one could ever compete with the great Mehdi Hassan Saab in so far as his control over Sur is concerned! Great… both are great singers… legends in fact… everyone has its own choices… one likes the rose flavour and another jasmine etc. besides the technical excellence, voice quality and effects, Jigar ka khoon bhi chahiye asar ke liye… and we remember Begum Akhtar, Jagjit Singh, Talat Mehmood and our own Rafi Sahab… they all, with others serving the music have given us solace and support in difficult times… God bless all….
