The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
The Wine Spectator is a widely distributed wine magazine and they have put together a Top 100 list each year since 1988
Their editors select the most exciting wines from the wines they reviewed during the year. They are not necessarily picking the most highly rated wines but also look at the price and availability,
I rarely read the Wine Spectator as I think that it is more of a lifestyle magazine and I don’t like the fact that they allow advertisements of producers that they are also supposed to review independently.
This is a problem in wine writing in general. Magazines are today relying heavily on money from wine producers and how are you supposed to objectively review a wine from a winery that pays the bills?
On a lighter note: I just had a look at the first Wine Spectator Top 100 from 1988 and it is quite funny: First of all, there is a lot of Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Barbaresco among the best wines, and only two wines from the US in the Top 20
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg is listed at 210 US$, Petrus at 160 US$, and Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Cuvée at 12 US$, double the price of Antinori's Santa Cristina … How times have changed!

I have seen quite a few videos of yours where you identify wines that you think are overrated, sometimes a little underrated. I think it would be interesting to see a video dedicated purely to a few select wines you think are really underrated, or got a poor public opinion around them unfairly. Or rather, are there any wines that are publicly rated poorly but you consider highly?

In 1998 I bought Beaucastel for 30 German Marks a bottle, Chateau Talbot was at 50-60 Marks per bottle. Now I got Chateau Talbot for 55 € the bottle, harvest 2019, while Beaucastel is at 80-100 €. So Talbot is one of the rare classic Bordeaux which kept it's value in terms of prizing and even improved in quality!

2001, I went to a winemakers dinner that cost me €275 for a ticket back then (in local currency). We had all red bottles of DRCs 1995 box (Conti, Tache, Riche, Vivant, Grands, Eche) and then a 5 course dinner with Clos Vougeot ad libitum there, but most just brought the generous DRC glasses to the dinner had drank the rest of them there. Near the end we had a surprise blind Vega Sicilia 1970 that was excellent and might be the best Spainish wine I ever had! All that for $300/€275 for that. Yeah. 2001 was a better time for wine.

HdV have really stepped up their wines over the last few years with Guillaume Boudet taking the reins as head winemaker. The older HdVs were much more heavy handed with their oak use. Their Californios, the Syrah, was more in the style of Shiraz, whereas the 2018 Californios has the balance and poise of a Cote Rotie. It’s really delicious! Le Debut, the Chardonnay made from younger vines is a nice value. It’s gained heft as the vines have matured (currently 10+ years of age).

Konstantin, I am only a minute into this video and once again I have to say, thank you for keeping it real man. I have said it before and I will say it again, you are the real deal when it comes to showing off what a real Wine Master can do. As for the magazine, I have been asking for the longest time exactly time how any company can accept advertisements yet review those products. If you bomb a wine will that wine company advertise that product with them? I do read the magazine with the thought in the back of my mind that there is a lot of bias going into it. There have been times when a winery has sent me a wine to review and I just bombed it and never heard from the winery again, they act as if I owe them something other then a shout out and a thank you (which they do get). While I think this is a bad way to do business, it does lend to the credability of other wine reviewers.

Your point about publications taking money is such a good one. But even worse is wine critics who work for supermarket chains awarding point scores for the supermarket wines. One in the U.K. just awarded 90 points to a very average £6 wine. It’s dishonest!

The restaurant that I run has Double Diamond 2019 on or Coravin by the glass list. We had the 2018 prior and I will say I believe that the 2019 vintage is a much better wine than the 2018. That being said I still don't understand the number 1 spot it received. I have brought it to numerous guests as a sample with a couple of other cabs and it is almost never picked as a favorite of theirs. While I normally wouldn't take much account in that sort of thing the guests that I have done this with are pretty experienced and knowledgeable Cabernet Sauvignon fans. All of that being said, if you are able to find a bottle of the 2019 Double Diamond at retail it is still a great price on a great wine. Thank you for the great videos!

I have to say as a WS subscriber that the recent shift of adding individual winery ads/partners/stories to the standard email distribution felt like a big sellout. That being said, they still feel less tainted than Wine Enthusiast let alone James Suckling, who apparently likes every wine he tastes.

Agree. I used to sub to Decanter, WA and WS and took the average of WA/WS scores as the real score, then read the notes from Decanter as I felt I had more English taste than American taste, for Bx wines. I ignore the US wines in the US mags as they were hyped too hard back then (I had several and always rated them lower) but the US mags were excellent sources to rate the Bx wines and pulled no punches, where Decanter felt like they just rated them after price, most of the time.

Can we please get more reviews for wines under $30? Here in the US at least most people who go to the store and look at the wine selection (which is often very large) we mostly see wines under $50, many more under $30. Most probably fall between $15 and $30, but I am not sure. The point is most people look for wines to buy in that price range, or they simply can only afford that. Here in San Francisco we have some higher end supermarkets like Andronicos (now owned by Safeway for those who are from CA) or Molly Stone, or even Trader Joes have a very big selection of wines. So I can only speak for San Francisco.

Konstantin, a very nice tasting video as always. I really appreciate that you score these wines and the Petrus last week. It helps to have a more clear view about what to expect frome these wines. I visited Beaucastel in 1997, just after finishing studies and started tasting wine. Great memories from the region, including Gigondas and Tavel. It's time to retaste Beaucastel. Luckily I can find it at € 80 here in the neighbourhood of Brussels. That's about the maximum I would spend on a bottle of wine. I prefer to taste 2 or 3 very good wines around € 25 - € 30. Exceptionally I'll try this Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Apparently the family Perrin is also making other wines: Côtes du Rhône Réserve, Cairanne Peyre Blanche, Vinsobres Les Cornuds, Vacqueyras Les Christins and Gigondas La Gille. I think I will try these to. The tasting of Château Talbot reminds me that I must try the 1994 Talbot that I inherited. By the way, never understood why they named the grape "Petit Verre d'Eau" as "small glass of water".

Nice. Ordered a 12 bottle crate of Talbot in 2021 and did not open the test bottle yet. 2019 was for me the first year i bought as subscriptions, and since i just started my cellar and since this is supposed to age, i bought a lot to make sure enough survive my thirst that long (ordered plenty in 2020, some unfortunately a bit later or even 2021 when prices already rose quite a bit - talbot was among the late buys, and brane cantenac too). Already did a 2019 bdx tasting with some colleagues and 10 different wines to taste, but didnt bother to commit infanticide on the more expensive ones. The tasting included Clos manou, Sociando-Mallet, Meyney, Lafon-Rochet, Haut-Bages Liberal, Gloria, Saing-Pierre (st.julien), Ferrière, de Fieuzal and Lassègue - funnily enough, while there were differences in the preferences in the middle part of the field, all 7 of us put Ferrière 1st and Lassègue last (However, I am also just not a right-bank guy). Regarding the other ones, many liked the Clos manou (which did extremely well considering that it was clearly the cheapest wine in the lineup) and the two wines from St. Julien (Saint-Pierre was the most expensive wine in the tasting, Gloria is also a good budget choice).

My experience with Ch. Beaucastel is that it tastes very different young than it does with 10-15 years of bottle age. Very few wines go through such an extreme transformation, IMO. I actually don’t care for it much when it is young-often too much prune and raisin in the fruit. But well-aged Beaucastel is always beautiful! I just tried the 2019 Tignanello, and it was wonderful IMO, significantly better than the 2004 vintage I had many years ago.

Excellent review Konstantin and you raise the obvious caveats. A magazine reviewing wine from sellers that advertise on it and ton of US wine. US and French wine - oh dear. Is this where we are in 2022/23? How on earth do we even select 'The Best'? It's an obsolete concept. Ridiculously expensive wine too without any concession to value as well. Very fair point scoring from you and appreciate your input about the Spectator choices but the 'Top' concept is so out of touch today.

Nicely done! Fresh, structured, and just a bit edgy! Yes, QPR in WS is more for the elites than the hoi-polloi! And the conflict with advertisers is an issue unresolved like the tannin in a 2019 Talbot. Keeping it real and for the wine lover that can only occasionally reach for a $50 bottle of wine.

Well you're on 98.1 k so I'm confident you'll get there! These wines certainly are a bit pricey for most domestic buyers, but it's interesting to see how they shape up.. The major supermarkets do have some very skilled buyers.. I for one picked up a bottle of Vina Maipo Chilean Merlot the other day on offer at Sainsbury's for under a fiver, which is as cheap as chips (quite LITERALLY 🤣) and I thought it represented outstanding value for money, fruity but with enough tannin to hold flavour. Most people probably would like to see you do more reviews of wine in the cheaper brackets, but I can only speak for myself.. A most enjoyable review all the same! 🌟👍🍷

On the top 10 wines of 2014, there were 3 Portuguese wines there. Since there isn't a lot of content out there on premium Portuguese wine, if you get the chance to review one those, that would be amazing. (Quinta do Vale Meao for example) Great content as always, thanks!

What an insightful little review. I did notice the wine you sample in this video is, however, rather cheap! 💯

Great concept as always. Given that many of us rely on ratings to help with buy decisions, it’s great you take an unbiased look at them. Suggestion: I’ve been looking at wines where there is a major diversion in scores by WS and WE, the two major raters in the US. I think something could be learned by you tasting some of those wines. Thanks as always for your great content.

What do you think of Decanter, they use a three critic pannel to blind taste wines and come to a consensus of the score. As a result the scores a lower like wine spectator and they have less reviews overall but I feel like there reviews are just as accurate if not more. I do appreciate critics that blind taste test. Do you know of a good solo critics who blind taste? Keep up the great work I was subbed since you were around 5K or so

Hey, love your videos. I was wondering if you’d consider making a video about your preferred technical wine books, wine guides and novels linked to wine. Cheers from Australia.

I'd be interested to see the top rated 5 wines in their list that are sub $50/€50. I really enjoy your reviews but I'd like to see more wines that I can bring myself to drink with less than 10 years of cellaring.

Random suggestion to get over the hangover of the Double Diamond disappointment - Chateau Montelena Cabernet. Similar price, very different AVA (Calistoga), but to my palate it was the best thing I tasted from California last year. Thanks for your thoughts on these very popular "grail" wines.

Agreed! I was going to bring this up, so I’m glad someone else did! I am very interested in your cellar! Is it underground? How is the climate controlled? What is the story behind the sword and knife behind you? As an electrician, I’m even interested in the little lamp up on the shelf! Please give us a tour!

As always, a great video and commentary. If you haven't done so already, it would be great to compare and contrast against it's Tuscan peers from a common vintage.

FWIW I believe if you look at Wine Enthusiast top 100 wines they are geared more towards value driven wines. Lots of affordable options. Spectator focuses more on premium wines that are widely distributed, which recently seems to be more and more American wines. WS do have some good value options, but never in their top 10, usually they are littered throughout the top 100. I know Suckling is not a popular guy in online wine communities, but having one of his editors based in Germany you do see a lot of good German and Austrian wines represented in his top 100.

I'm always impressed with your videos! I noticed as you pour your wines, wonder if you know of the first in bottle aerator, KWÄF which is just now coming out in the US market. With your incredible wine testing expertise, I would like to have your evaluation of this new product! I have just tried it and I'm astonished!🍷

Great review tasting! A shame the 2019 Double Diamond was not available to taste. I recently visited Napa and tried the 2019 Opus One and it was knock-your-socks-off fantastic to the point I emptied my wallet there. 😆I assume if you get a 2019 Double Diamond it will be night and day better than the 2018. 2019 was just a fantastic vintage for Napa Valley. 👍

Have you tasted Fernand Engel Pinot Noir Elevé en Fût de Chêne 2019? It's a truly exceptional Pinot Noir from Alsace. No one who I know has tasted it, would have said it's a Pinot Noir. It's a thick, amazingly smooth and still aromatic wine. It needs one to two hours in the glass to fully open, which is also rare for Pinots, I think. Apparently they treat some of the grapes in an Amarone style, which makes the wine very non-Pinot like. I have tasted also 2020, and 2019 is clearly better. The most amazing thing is the price: about 20 €.
