Melancholiaah!'s third single release「puzzle box」explores the idea of growing together and making a change in our world in even the darkest, lowest, and most disturbing of times. To still be true to yourself and those around you, to find the ability to grow into yourself when the odds are stacked against you, to make connections with those who want to keep dreams alive, it is a fate that is forever attainable as long as you are ready to take it head on and truly begin. I'm absolutely IN LOVE with this. i'm actually FLOORED. incredibly proud of how far you've come, all the progress you've made. This song absolutely BOPS. definitely gonna be on repeat for a super long time. its especially inspiring, on top of all that. I think this lower singing register fits you so well that I wasn't even shocked when i heard it, its so natural and you OWN it! You've used your music to help you on your journey and it hasn't stopped, honestly thank you!

I gotta confess I’m siftin through your whole discography and HOLY hell I’m so glad you also took a bit of a jrock, almost vkei direction with your music? It also sounds amazing with your range!! Sorry if I’m using the wrong terms, but I’m all down for this grittier sound too. The effect at 3:17 is so damn cool too!

Found you cause of Toad stuff, really like your main music but I don't speak Japanese so just putting it out there that it'd be awesome to see your dark grungy style mixing in with something English, whether it's a cover or something original! But also if you only do Japanese singing outside of Toad covers then that is okay, you do you :)

Hi Syd, I completely understand where you're coming from, but I think that the situation is a tad more nuanced than other cut and dry incidents of cultural appropriation. I think the first thing to consider is the artist's history. Now from what I understand (please anyone correct me if I'm wrong) this artist spent much of his formative childhood years performing at conventions focused on Japanese culture, more specifically idol culture and music. This is how he was brought up. So no, he is not Japanese nor is he even a white man born in Japan. But, he wasn't just some guy who wanted to get famous and decided to appropriate a culture for fame. He isn't singing about stereotypically "Japanese" subjects nor is he using his platform to demean Japanese people in the process of elevating himself. Instead, we see this artist singing a song that quite frankly could be sung in any language from Mongolian to Manx and still be unchanged. The lyrics are wholly untethered to Japanese lyrical themes and thus, in my opinion, do not constitute cultural appropriation. Now, as for the fact that the artist is singing in Japanese, we must be mindful that he didn't not simply come to the conclusion that "Asian stuff is trendy right now" and pickup a Japanese-English dictionary or open Google translate. He wrote lyrics from the heart and decided to sing in Japanese, which is a language that (once again, please someone correct me if I'm wrong) he has sung in for years since childhood, one that he has great respect for, and also one whose words he is able to pronounce with ease and not butcher. In light of this situation, I wouldn't say that is in anyway harmful to any group of people. I'm curious to learn more about your perspective though and am fully prepared to have a dialogue with you should you fancy it. Cheers, Alrighty

@@ceedromadrigal7165 I think it’s a bit more nuanced, as you said, I don’t disagree there. What makes me decidedly uncomfortable is that even if he does have a past as someone who performed in Japanese at cons, he is still now commodifying and portraying himself physically as a race that he is not a part of while singing in that language. Just as you said, he can be singing this in any language, whether Japanese or even English. The problem itself isn’t the language, there are many artists who sing in multiple languages. But the problem is that at first glance, you wouldn’t know unless you looked for it that he isn’t half or full Japanese, and he sings almost entirely in Japanese for financial gain. Even if it is something very near and dear to his heart he is still not Japanese; he can wash his face and take out his sclera lenses and not have to deal with the same issues an Asian person faces in the music business overseas, and to my knowledge he has never acknowledged this. There is also the fact that he is a trans man that is profiting off a Japanese aesthetic without acknowledging (to my knowledge anyway) the rampant homophobia and transphobia that exists within Japan. Trans men and women in Japan have no protective laws against discrimination, they’re forced into sterilization, and are only allowed to transition if they’re over 20, unmarried and with no children because Japanese society views them as an aberration and wants them to die out-but then are also highly fetishized and objectified in hentai and AVs. As a non-Japanese trans man, he does not experience this same level of discrimination and irreversible operations for wanting to live as his authentic self. So the reason I feel it’s appropriative and asianfishing is because this person is not at all Japanese nor to my knowledge are they located in Japan, adopts an anime-esque-fused-with-visual-kei-and-street-style aesthetic and makeup style to make them look Japanese, sings almost entirely in Japanese, and does not acknowledge his privilege in that he does not have to be subjected to the same struggles as a white trans man in the music industry than a Japanese trans man would, especially within Japanese music scenes.

@@blistertoothHi Syd, Good points. I see where you're coming from now and largely agree with the stance you're taking. I don't think it is as harmful as some other examples of appropriation and does come from a place of respect but I agree that it is also complicated by the fact that the artist is a trans man adopting a largely transphobic culture without making a mention of the situation. Lastly, I think criticisms of the artist's adoption of a Japanese style also have merit but I don't think that they've crossed into full-on yellowface here as when I saw the music I could immediately tell they were white. So, is it completely doing right by Japanese culture? Probably not although I am skeptical about the number of Japanese people (Cis or trans) who would be offended. Is it Mickey Rooney from Breakfast at Tiffany's level of bad? Not in my opinion. Cheers, Alrighty
