It is very refreshing to have the French influence within Quebec. Very uplifting - makes such a difference. Only really explored into Montreal and Quebec city but they have a very different atmosphere about them. The lifestyle and attitudes much more European in these regions compared to close by Ontario and other surrounding English speaking North America. Great specialist shops like chocolatier's floating around, good regular music festivals and many art galleries in Montreal. Large well designed Botanical Gardens which is one of my favourites. Easy to get around on a great subway system with many opening into large underground trading areas. Quebec a lot smaller than Montreal but a lot more French. Very intimate. Good food, quaint shops, great colonial architecture, nice garden areas and the wide panoramic vista of the St Lawrence spectacular. These two cities are my favourite in Canada. Cold though. Have not ventured up north into Quebec which would be really interesting - likely another world up there. I think you are right with the Finland association - so many lakes, forests and lots of peat from what I can gather. Very relaxing interlude once again - Thank You Melange.

OH!!! I am from Montreal, QC, this is wonderful Yes, we have many many potholes hahah In French they are called nid de poules which is a chicken nest. I love a good cidre de glace (it's sweeter than regular wine and tastes more like apples which I appreciate) BUT I love gluwein (not sure how to spell it!!!)

Unfortunately Canada's very harsh winters cause a lot of infrastructural damage and so we need to make repairs every year if you don't want things like potholes all over the place. I would say that the biggest differences between Quebec and France French are the vocabularies (a lot of regional language is used due to most French Canadians coming from coastal regions like Normandy, Brittany, and coastal Pays de la Loire) and the vowel qualities are very different from France French. Like Quebecois French still differentiates between long and short vowels like Belgian and Swiss varieties of French, as well as the traditional Lyonnais dialect, but many long vowels have evolved drastically like ê is pronounced the aɪ̯ and â is pronounced like ɔː. Short i is also pronounced like the i in the English word sit, short u is ʏ [a short üh in German], and short ou is ʊ [like the u in the word look]. T and D when followed by i or u become palatalize to Ts and Dz as well. So Tu dis is pronounced like Tsy dzɪ. Nasal vowels are also different with nasal ɑ̃ moving forward to ã, nasal ɛ̃ becomes diphthong ẽɪ̯̃, nasal ɔ̃ becomes õʊ̯̃ and nasal œ̃ becomes œ̃˞. The letter R also lengthens preceeding vowels unlike in France French. The Oi diphthong is more archaic than that of France and is pronounced like weh rather than wah, like it would have been in France 400 years ago. The R in Western Quebec and Ontario was also a trill like in Spanish or Italian up until the 1950s when people began to replace it with the standard uvular R that was commonly used in Eastern Quebec and France. Only a few places still use this R and their populations are largely elderly and dying out. Many people will also associate these distinct features of Quebec vowels as uncivilized and the qualities of some poor, uneducated person while mimicking the speech of metropolitan French (these are largely Middle Class and wealthy French Canadians). Other Quebecois speakers, however, take great pride in their pronunciation and the uniqueness it gives them, especially if they come from a working class or more rural background. I know that a lot of French people cannot for the life of them do French Canadian accents because of the very different vowel inventory and rules around vowel pronunciation that just doesn't exist in standard Metropolitan French. They would have to learn a bunch of new sounds just to speak it and to remember a bunch of rules.

The Gatineau region won't be on the Southern Quebec map. When you were looking at the close up of Hull, you were a fair way from the American border, and actually on the Ottawa River which flows into the St. Lawrence to the west of Montreal, not far from Lac St. Francois. I grew up in the Southwestern Quebec and Eastern Ontario region. Otherwise, great work.

As a French Canadian, I must say, your French is very good! So Sherbrooke, is pronounced by ppl from Sherbrooke, with an English accent and with a French accent by most ppl not living there Les cantons de l’Est où l’Estrie, where Sherbrooke is, has a strong English influence :). As for the temperature here, it’s not as cold as it was honestly. I remember minus 35celsius in winter but depending where you are in Quebec ( I’m in a city called Saint-Jean sur Richelieu, south east of Montreal) and winter there aren’t not that cold. Minus 20-25 compared to Quebec City or La Gaspesie :)

You will find the odd English place name in Quebec, and your pronunciation of Sherbrooke is right. You are right about the Catholic influence in Quebec. A fun fact for you: Swear words in Quebecois French are actually religious terms used out of context.
