Melanie Faye covering Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" and Mariah Carey's "My All" at Summit LA18's Closing Plenary Show.
Melanie Faye
Praised for her “divine guitar skills” by Fader, the Tennessee native melds melodic jazz, rhythmic funk, and soulful R&B into an intoxicating and hypnotic blend that belies her young age. While Hendrix comparisons may be an inevitable rite of passage for any brilliant black guitarist, especially one with a stunning look and throwback style like Faye, her music actually shares more in common with Stevie Wonder, commanding your attention through a tender, understated sophistication rather than any virtuosic display of fireworks. She counts Michael Jackson among her biggest inspirations, and it’s not hard to hear hints of Eric Johnson as her fingers glide across the fretboard, but there’s no denying that Faye is a uniquely modern artist: raised a Jehovah’s Witness by chemist parents, she counts R&B star SZA among her earliest fans, and her first exposure to her instrument came through the Guitar Hero video games. It may be an unconventional origin story, but there’s nothing conventional about Faye, and that’s just the way she likes it.

Hey - I have a stupid question. By tone do you mean the actual sound her guitar is making (like the model of guitar), or is it a technique thing, or is it effects pedals? I come from the drumming world so this kinda doesnt make sense to me. Thanks :)
@spartakick300
@spartakick300 5 жыл бұрын
@@TC-lk2ev for me, I am speaking of the soft "rounded" tone of her picking. Ala Mark Knopfler or any one that plays with out a pick. And for that matter her left hand also has a softness and sensitivity somewhat exceptional. She says in her head she imagines singing and vocal lines. That's a big part of her sound too. IMHO

@Matthew she's using her fingers...gets a more 'weighty' sound. emily remler said she just wanted to be remembered as 'someone with a real big thumb'...the mass of our fingers compared to a pick seems to mean something....also the way she doesn't seem to be rolling off too much off the top with her guitar's tone control...that natural bright sound shines through...plus just a hint of distortion, which isn't there for the lower volumes but happens when she plucks a string harder...i love players like that. tonight show guitarist kevin eubank's solo album 'sundance' really makes use of that phenomena. good reverb, too. and sorry, buddy. RACE HAS ZERO TO DO WITH IT.

Yeah sure. He would love to get a tribute with M.Carey. Making a tribute for Hendrix and Carey is like going for dinner in a 5 star restaurant and eating fries from Mc Donalds with that. How can you even put them in one sentence. Hendrix is an artist and musician. Carey is a product. She doesn’t write her own songs. She is an amazing singer. That’s all.

Melanie’s rendition of Mariah Carey’s “My All”-my God. I must have heard it countless times before on her KZfaq channel, but I couldn’t help but get teary-eyed once her guitar started singing it. Man, music that touches the soul like Melanie’s is perhaps the most ethereal of pleasures we’re afforded in this existence. To a great extent, and if nothing else, experiencing this kind of art makes life worth living. Absolutely wonderful.

I appreciate that she essentially puts Hendrix and Mariah Carey in the same group here, which will piss off a lot of rock fans I suppose but just shows how genres in music are nothing more than guidelines for listeners when buying music, genres are not rules. @@tdb517 Well Mariah not only has the widest vocal range ever recorded in popular music, she also has written or co-written about 95% of her songs, and produced or co-produced as well, which is so much more than her peers in the big-voiced R&B/pop diva category can say.
@drewgab3172

@@tdb517 Okay now we have the archetypal pompous, pretentious music fan. Maybe on another planet Mariah Carey's music is crap, certainly not on this earth. Literally even most pretentious music fans give her her dues for a bunch of songs that are just undeniable. Céline Dion? Sure. Beyoncé? Okay, yeah. Whitney, even. But Mariah songs such as 'My All', 'Always Be My Baby', 'Fantasy', 'Honey', 'Heartbreaker', 'Emotions' are so obviously not crap, whatever kind of music you're into. And it doesn't even matter if you like her music or hate it, the point here is talent. Mariah has written the vast majority of her catalogue, making her undeniably talented, period. And you can look up about her vocal range, it's a known fact she has a 5-octave range which is more than any other recording artist in popular music history. She literally holds 2 Guinness World records, this one and the highest note of the human vocal range.

But at least your honest about how you apparently feel about everyone who didn't like the video. Chris, you know as well as I do that there are good and bad attitudes in every walk of life. We are ALL held accountable for our thoughts and actions towards others. This is a video of a lovely young lady playing her heart out to everyone who will listen to her beautiful arrangement, that's it! I can care less about who thumbs up or down, I enjoyed it very much and I have been playing guitar for over 50 years, with ALL colors of the "human race'......Jesus said to love the way He loved us by going to the cross for us. @@thomasfontenot4881 This is so beautiful what you said, I had teary eyes, me too I play guitar and sing, the reason why I said what I said, is because I love to sing and play Rock, it is my favorite genre of music, but it blow your mind on how much negative I receive from Black and White. When I sing at Karoake, they are sure I'm gonna bust out with Minaj or cardi b, but can't handle it when I sing Metallica or Soundgarden. I cannot and will not change what I love, I ask them what color is an emotion or a feeling? That's what music is about, I taught to hate, even though my Mom from Memphis and experience it at a young age, I too am from a Christian home background, I'm from Los Angeles, but now live in Sacramento, and Thomas, we have experienced so much racial hate and jealousy here it's beyond my comprehension, I try my best to kill it with kindness, but I'm very bitter now, because nobody cares and won't do or say anything about it. All I can do is pray, expose, but definitely continue to be who I am. God bless you, Enjoyed the Beautiful words. Maybe we can jam together one day. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘.

Justin L excuse me sir, that metaphor related to the excelence and uniqueness of such a sensitive artist doesnt seem to have offended the artist environment, according to the messages posted in this entry. Those people have easily captured the meaning and essence of my phrase, meaning that, on the other hand , doesn’t seem to be very complex to understand. Mostly if it is read with open mind and no prejudices. Have a nice day.
