Inspired by some icing scrapers I bought at Tuesday Morning, I share my method my making painted papers for use in journaling. (Note at 44:00 - The Holbein Luminous Opera is only $14.99 a tube, not $25. I'm crazy.)
Let's get messy!

Melanie, I have never, ever written a comment before on anything. I have been struggling trying to make solid color painted papers for collages without brush marks FOREVER! I’m sorry to say I believe I’m addicted to watching acrylic painting videos! I’m new to painting of any kind. And then today I came across this video of yours! So AWESOME! This did the trick for me. I thank you so, so much!

I enjoy all your albums, coloured pages. I sure enjoyed your moms little book she dropped off to you. And said don't share it. Glad you did. I am so glad you share your ways of arranging what you have saved to apply to your journals ect. I am hooked on your art work, material ideas. A grandma who has been making books it seems forever now I have done the painting pages in my composition books. I am so glad I found you. thank you.

This is my favorite thing to do for my journals. It's funny the ones you consider ugly, with the stray marks, are the ones I like the most. There was something relaxing about watching you scrape paint.

I put that Golden copper down on deli paper three coats allowing it to dry in between. I can then peel it off as its own “sheet” of paper and use that for collages. U can cut it or tear it and it’s so cool to handle!

I'm not sure why this showed up in my recommends today, but it was just what I needed to take my mind off my migraine for a little while. I make similar painted papers that get used in my collages. I end up with a few that are too colorful for my style of collage, but after seeing how you use your colorful pages in your journals, I might start saving those pages to make a book. Thanks for the peaceful inspiration this morning!

I paint file folders as well. I use them for tags, punches, and journal covers. I don’t care for the feel of the paper and I’m wondering about rubbing them with wax, maybe Daddy Van’s. Thank you. The paint comparisons were especially helpful.
@MelanieSullivan
@MelanieSullivan 3 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with the feel of the paper if it's painted with craft acrylics, which tend to be very dry and chalky. Higher grade acrylics, even student grade, will have less of that chalky feel, and professional or artist grade acrylics and butter smooth. I love the idea of waxing paper you aren't going to apply anything to, but I don't think you could glue anything to waxed paper. You could sew it though!! You might try coating your painted papers with a thin layer of acrylic Matte Medium, or even Gloss Medium. My favorite brand is Liquitex. An acrylic sealing medium would change the surface and get rid of that chalky feel.

I love painty papers...I scrape paint on then I stencil over them with contrasting colors. I just bought some black & white scrapbook paper on clearance at HL so I think I'm gonna try water coloring those 😬 you have an awesome collection! Love the idea of the composition book! It's a ready to go glue book!

And the yucky looking pages make great die cuts/punched...I even take them and fold them in half and cut out heart shapes or arrows or flowers (I find its easier to do with a folded page for the mirrored image)... Just my 2cents 😍😍

I use that technique a lot, and it always brings me so much happiness! 😀 I think the copic stitching on the exposed multicolor spine is going to look absolutely gorgeous!!! BTW, I got a stainless steel scraper/veggie chopper at the Dollar store to use spread the paint. You should give it a try 😜. x.o

I'm only ten minutes in but wanted to say thank you for the tutorial! I don't have access to colourful papers as I live in a small town in Australia and was missing having colour in my journal. Can't wait to finish the video and go play :) Do you have any recommendations to what pens to use when writing on the coloured pages?

From all the videos I've watched I thought painty papers were smeared paint done ahead of time so you'd have some colors & marks to tear apart to use in projects or to make backgrounds with them.

I just spent the last few hours making painty papers to try out some of the techniques in the Cut Paper Art book. It was so great. I even enjoyed ironing them flat after they dried. I was beginning to question my sanity though when I realised I can’t remember the last time I used my iron on actual clothing 😂
@SandiMo77

Love the way you paint papers Melanie. Thank you so much for this tutorial. Question: how do you get your painted binder pages to lay so flat? Do you iron them? Mine are curled at the edges. And while I do love crinkly, rumpled pages, I sometimes like them to be flat.
@MelanieSullivan
@MelanieSullivan 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sandi, I almost always weigh them down overnight to flatten them out. I've also ironed them between layers of parchment paper if I can't wait until the next day. Hope that helps!

What are the best markers for using over the top of acrylic?
@MelanieSullivan
@MelanieSullivan 3 жыл бұрын
The craft acrylic, the kind in the little bottles that are around a dollar, are very chalky and have a tendency to scratch up my good markers (Tombow, etc.). I think a ballpoint pen is best for writing on acrylic. As for markers, I keep a stash of kids markers (Crayola, Rose Art, etc.) on hand and use those painted papers because I'm not upset if one gets ruined. Slick Markers by American Crafts and Sharpies work well too. Hope that helps!
