Melatonin ranks as the most popular sleep aid potentially assisting those with jet lag, disordered sleep due to shift work, rotating schedules and even simple insomnia. Levels of this natural hormone are manufactured by the pineal gland as the sun goes down. Concentration peaks during the hours following midnight and vanishes as the sun rises.
Melatonin allows synchronization of the body clock to a 24 hour day. In totally blind individuals and those living experimentally in complete darkness the day averages about 24.5 hours which significantly disrupts the sleep wake cycle.
LED light produces excessive quantities of blue light as exemplified by computer screens, iPads, laptops and ebook readers. These delay production of melatonin and interfere with sleep. Incandescent light bulbs lack these troublesome wavelengths of light.
Recent investigations suggest a more widespread but still undefined role of melatonin than previously assumed. It appears synthesis occurs in most tissues with potential implications for fertility, cancer, psychiatric disease and blood pressure control. It may function as an anti-inflammatory agent, modulate pain and protect the tissues from oxidants.
Interestingly its ability to induce sleep and correct circadian disorders due to shift work and jet lag remain relatively weak.

This is fantastic! I really appreciate the in-depth review of the actions on the body by the drug/supplement. I can get the majority of this information from reviewing the studies, but interpreting the statistics into practical numbers to identify the significance helps greatly! Additional interaction information and interpretation is very valuable!

holy cow. I could not talk about melatonin for 30 minutes if I tried hard. Super interesting video. Kinda freaky that the UK considers it a prescription only product. But what does it tell us? in the US we gobble it up like it's candy...

Hi Dr.- I just left a cautionary note on this hormone and how it didn't help me- I forgot to add I was frustrated so I bought another brand containing Tryptophan and 5htp? Something like that! Sorry! It was recommended to me for migraine too- no help. Should I save up and buy one of those lights for seasonal affective disorder? I was hoping a glass of hot milk and the melatonin and Tryptophan etc would allow me to sleep with my family- it's lonely and depressing to be up from 1 or 2am, watching KZfaq!

I take 10 mg at night. Plus tryptophan and a plant complex containing griffonia and escolitia. Of course does not help that much with my chronic insomnia but it seem I have a better sleep... In Italy the recommended dose is 5mg/day but I feel it is not enough for me.

also as far as not taking them very long I strongly suspect that is wrong. Melatonin decreases as you age and has long been suspected of starting the aging process and keeps a person operating younger by cheating and as you said suspected of MANY anticancer and aging things. NO WAY TO TEST ME what do they do say stop taking and we will do a case study till you die? very tough to test it. I personally think if it declines then how can it not be right to cheat and keep critical hormones young?
