Melissa Benoist, star of The CW’s Supergirl, first opened up about her experience with domestic violence in November 2019 on Instagram. She was met with an outpouring of support from fans. Now, more than half a year later, in this extended edit, she retells parts of her story -- from the first signs of violent behavior to an incident that sent her to the ER for a permanent eye injury to the freedom of rebuilding her life -- and reflects on what other people need to know about the reality of intimate partner violence.
The United Nations estimates that the COVID-19 pandemic will lead to 15 million new cases of relationship abuse globally. For anyone currently experiencing this, Melissa wants you to know you’re not alone: “It might feel that you’re more trapped than ever, and it’s worse than it’s been, but it’s possible [to get out], and you deserve to have a different life.”
*** If you or someone you know needs support, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE(7233) for confidential support. You can also text HOME to 741741 to speak with a counselor at the Crisis Text Hotline. Both services are totally anonymous.
To support the Together For Her initiative, which funds organizations that help survivors rebuild their lives, go to www.care.org/togetherforher ***
________
Melissa first shared this message in May during Night of Solidarity, a digital event dedicated to deepening society’s understanding of domestic violence. (Watch the program here: • Night Of Solidarity | ... ) The event was produced by The Meteor, (wearethemeteor.com/), a group of journalists, artists and activists building a new platform committed to the equality and dignity of all women.

okay so i was scrolling down the comments and i found so many awful things and i felt like i needed to say something. first, she's talking about her ex-husband Blake Jenner, not her current husband Chris Wood. second, she mentioned on her igtv that sometimes she had to fight back (which is completely normal and okay) and that they both mentally abused each other because their relationship was just toxic and horrible. that doesn't change the fact that he physically abused her and that he manipulated during the entire course of their relationship and he continues to do so right now, by addressing this almost one year after, just when melissa announced the birth of her child and said that she's happy with herself and her family. he also gaslighted her in his entire post and tried to look like a victim when he just isn't. if you believe the abuser and not the victim something is clearly wrong with you. #IStandWithMelissa

Yes! Another common comment from men is the old 'if you'd been with a nice guy like me instead of going for a chad, this wouldn't have happened! You'd have been treated like a princess every day(yaaay?)'. These self-declared 'nice guys' make it very clear that they're exactly the type of person to abuse a partner. It's so sick that in 2020, domestic violence is still widely disbelieved, and/or the victim is blamed... on another level, given Trump and his cronies' opinion & treatment of women, it's sadly not too much of a surprise that misogyny in all it's forms has become cool for some. They even attach it to being anti-'woke', for goodness sake.

Excellent comment!! There is so much victim blaming. It's much easier to just assume the person is lying or making it up. Yet there are stories like Melissa's all over the place. And BTW not all the abusers are men, although sadly the large portion are. There are also abusive women and they are just as bad as the men. Such a powerful message from Melissa. It takes so much courage to share an experience like hers. I have even more respect for her now than I did before.

Seeing Melissa's video the first time last year, I am stunned that something like this would happen to her and after I read Blake's post concerning this, I'm both angry and disappointed. He tried to blame Melissa for the "abuse" she inflicted on him, but she's only trying to defend herself if that violence kept escalating and he tried to play the victim. Just because Melissa is defending herself doesn't give him any excuse to play it off as abuse; I'm glad that Melissa is doing okay now and is married to Chris who treated her a lot better. As for Blake's Instagram apology on what he done, while I'm glad he confessed to what he did to her, he doesn't have any right to place blame on someone who's an actual victim of domestic abuse. If anyone has an issue about what I wrote here, I'll delete this comment; if not, that's okay because I'm here expressing what I feel about Blake's "apology" and being a supporter for Melissa. #IstandwithMelissa ❤

An interesting and balanced comment. Hopefully both Benoist and Jenner will now move on with their lives and learn the lessons. Relationships are complex and the key is to communicate. It appears some resentment built up within Jenner and he was not mature enough at that stage in his life to deal with it other than to strike out. His recent Instagram post at least showed he had come to terms with some of his issues and - while doing some blaming of his own - generally accepted blame and hoped to become a better participant in relationships. As with all "celebrity" stories we don't have access to all the facts - nor are we entitled to them - but I am sure most would agree that once abuse becomes physical - by either gender - then it is time to confront it and get out. Silence is not the answer.

Blake Jenner is narcissistic he basically shifted the blame as if she abused him too she did not she fought back
@rsfilmdiscussionchannel4168

I'm annoyed that there's a part of me that wants to consider Jenner to be telling the truth. I don't want to get myself in a situation where I root for the wrong person so that's probably why a part of me wants to think of him as correct, yet if I embraced that then most likely I'd end up doing just that.

I thought she was playing Supergirl - but she is playing just herself. The Supergirl in the series is sometimes astonishingly fragile for a woman of steel - and empathic, caring and so incredibly nice. But that seems to be just Mrs Benoît. To overcome such a traumatic experience at all is hard work. To overcome it as good as she did is just one in a million.

the guy that my parents tried to set me up was exactly like this. mind u, I'm Asian so all the blame goes to the girl for dumping an abusive guy. The guy told me that I couldn't wear skirts, talk to men, go to work (coz men would talk to me), keep him company at all times when he was bored but be on hold when he was busy, berated me when he had road rage, told me I was too serious and was fat, went to my parents house at strange times, emailed other women sexual remarks behind my back. After 2 weeks I was so fed up I cried to my parents and asked him to let me go. But then the harassment with emails and texts and phone calls started. I just blocked him. Then he sends me emotional emails and there was one time I emailed him back coz I felt so guilty and my parents were so upset that I broke up with him. Then he tried to lure me possibly to attack me but I didn't respond. thank god. many may ask me why I emailed him back that one time. trust me, this guy is so manipulative. And I felt so guilty and my dad was so pissed off at me for rejecting him and many years later my mom always tells me I missed such a great opportunity to find a perfect guy like him. Now watching this video I am so glad I broke it off. Otherwise I would probably be dead or married him and b abused. He had all these signs. Even simple things like what I would wear. I'm glad she spoke up coz other women out there will b able to identify the signs and leave or at least seek help. The worst thing is the ppl so close to you like your parents supporting him and telling u that he was probably the best thing that ever happened to me and how I was so worthless that I could possible never find a man ever is heart-breaking. But I saw thru his lies and deceit but most ppl won't. So pls help someone out there who needs help and never side with the abuser.

The strength of character it took for her share her story with not just a few people, but the whole world, and all of the scared and healed survivors...is truly remarkable. I already had so much respect for her, but this is something else entirely. Hugs to all survivors out there, and strength to all of those who haven't quite found their courage to break free. Being a survivor myself, I remember how long it took to share my story. I felt it was all my fault. And listening to her, it was like re-living my past. The healing journey is a long journey. I documented mine and turned it into a documentary. Every time I watch it, it's like watching someone else... I became stronger after it. And it's hard to believe I was ever in such a dark place inside myself. My heart goes to all people going through domestic violence. Let's speak up and change this. We can do it.

I often come back to this. When I saw the video where she told her story for the first time I was in an abusive relationship which just started to become more toxic. I hadnt realized it but her talking of the beginning stages made something click for me that something isnt right with my relationship but it didn't really sink in at that moment. But I'm very sure that her story helped me realizing how much worse it will get and that I won't be able to change that. I left that relationship after conflicts just began to escalate violently. Her story and her bravery really helped me and saved me from much more. Sharing something so personal, traumatizing and vulnerable with so many people like she did is so brave and strong and I'm forever thankful for that.
