Hanukkah is a war victory celebration vs Greeks in 2nd century B.C. to get some temple back that the Jews eventually lost. It's really not important at all. Hanukkah presented as an important Jewish holiday (which it isn't) to be set alongside and celebrated with Christmas is almost insulting to Christianity. Hanukkah is virtually a meaningless holiday in the Jewish calendar and it's not even in the Torah. Christmas and more so Easter are the two biggest holidays on the Christian calendar and Rush Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the two most important Jewish holidays. When Yom Kippur and Rush Hashanah are happening you hardly hear anyone mentioning them, they are largely done without much media attention. Then why the need to force a meaningless Jewish holiday like Hanukkah into the public vernacular with general greetings when Christmas is going on? It's almost like Hanukkah is used to crowd out Christmas. Hanukkah was reimagined as a "religious" holiday so Jewish kids wouldn't feel left out when Christian kids were getting presents. It's not even a religious holiday.

I'm Catholic and so was my husband. We never opened presents until AFTER we went to Mass. And we had to be on a fast to receive Holy COmmunion so eating came at the tail end of opening up presents. So I developed our own eating tradition. I prepared a bacon and cheese quiche on the day before Christmas and kept it in the fridge overnight. On Christmas Day as we began to unwrap presents I would stick the quiche in the oven and set the timer and it was usually done by the time we had opened our presents. Everyone helped to set the table and we all sat down to eat. There was a lot of joking around the table that first time I served it; REAL MEN don't eat quiche but it all ended after that first time I served it. The next year I had to make 2 pies because my husband and son LOVED IT. I miss that family tradition. Both kids are gone and they moved to a different state so now I only make quiche for myself and hold the happy memories in my heart.... But I make latkes for me during Hanukkah time too, after all, Jesus was also a Jew. I even have a menorah I loved.

Mine are also different. They are much bigger and they need to be eaten on a plate with knife and fork. We only use sour cream but if someone likes, they can add applesauce. The poor people could not afford the expensive novelty treats. Caviar? Maybe the smoked salmon is okay but older Jews could not afford that. So I keep mine less expensive but bigger but we do like ours crisp.

I'm just wondering if I'm too poor or the rest of the world is too rich. I live in Brazil where a can of caviar, of 125 g , is like 6 entire minimum wages. Imagine somebody working for six full months and just been able to buy one 125 g of one ingredient?
@enzopereslabourdette
@enzopereslabourdette 4 жыл бұрын
She calls it caviar, but in reality it's sturgeon eggs (roe) which is a lot less expensive than caviar. Caviar is veeeeeeery expensive still for most people in Europe and the US. Not 6 months minimum wage, but still way too expensive to buy with all other costs of living for normal people.
