I’m 16 in highschool. I’m friends with a guy named Devin who recently has been hooking up with his ex girlfriend, Cat. But he told me he was getting revenge and secretly screenshotting all her nude photos. He showed me some of them. All I could think about was this video as I went right behind his back, and without guilt told Cat exactly what he was doing. I may not really like her but we are SISTERS and I will do everything in my power to hold up my sisters.

I was 13 when I first listened to this poem, I am now 18 almost 19 and it feels so strange to be back here again. I am not that scared 13 year old girl anymore, although I do still have a long way to go. I am nearing the end of my teenage years and it’s crazy to think about, but being back here again has made me realize I have come a long way. These past 6 years were more difficult than I could have ever imagined, but I did it. To those of you who feel scared, alone, and tired, please know that things will get better. You might not notice yourself changing and getting stronger over time, but one day you will look back and be able to see how far you’ve come. Don’t let ANYONE try to dim your light, we have to stick together as women. Keep fighting, we’re all rooting for you💕

I come back to this video often. I'm 22 and I still need to hear this at times. I wish I had this when I was younger, being bullied and wondering why people were turning on me. Growing up in a small town and going to an extremely small school.. you knew everyone. It was traumatizing for me when they started harassing me. At this age, I have learned that yes, you need to hold your sisters up, even if they give you every reason not to. Time is too short to be nasty towards others. Be who YOU want to be, NOT who society says you need to be.

+L1ttleT3d Because most of the world tells girls that we are each other's competition. We have to fight each other for what we want. Look at high school, what she is talking about, girls try to build themselves up by tearing each other down. And then they are told that's how girls are. But in the end, girls who only tear apart end up being the most miserable, sad women. We aren't built up by tearing each other down, we need each other, to support and help. I can attest to this personally. When girls are only torn down by their peers, it makes it harder to get back up and fight, it makes it harder to make friends. Because what if the girl who was your friend, who you trusted with everything, suddenly turns around and betrays you to those girls who tear you apart. It makes it hard to trust people, it makes it hard to succeed when you don't know who to trust. I'm a very introverted person, but even I need a girl talk once in a while. But I don't know how to talk to other women anymore. I have to work very hard to trust a person because of how many people have betrayed me in the past. I constantly expect them to never speak to me again or decide they don't like me. It's a hard thing to live with, wanting a female friend, but not knowing how to trust one.
@elizabethjones1804
@elizabethjones1804 8 жыл бұрын
+L1ttleT3d Why would you think that I think that? Did I bring up guys at all? I've been betrayed by guys as well. I've also known some really awesome guys, like my boyfriend, who is amazing and I trust him with my heart and my life. I was gearing my response toward women because Melissa talked about holding up your sisters. This is important because women, and everyone really, need to stick up for each other and hold each other up. I personally don't know many women who haven't betrayed or turned their backs on me, same goes for men. But I don't know that many people, again, I'm very introverted. All I was trying to do was tell you why this poem had a powerful and resounding effect on me. She talks about your sisters, so I talked about your sisters. I related personal and intimate details to try to help you understand and you have done exactly as I said many women (and men) do, you tore me down. You could've thanked me for my opinion and story, but no, you decided that instead you had to attack me. Do you not see how you are doing exactly what she said? You are tearing down instead of building up. I don't care if you are a guy or a girl, absolutely nothing makes it okay to tear people down.
@elizabethjones1804
@elizabethjones1804 8 жыл бұрын
+L1ttleT3d The point of the poem wasn't about guys. Forget guys for just a moment. No one said anything about guys until you brought them up. The point is that when the world tries to kill you, you have to stick with your sisters. As young girls we are taught to that we are supposed to fight other girls to get to the top. However, all this does is mess you up. You have to stick together, as girls. If you are a guy, I don't know if you will understand this. If you are a girl, I don't see why you aren't understanding this. The world is hard and we have to stick together to survive

+David D. Davidson really? What if they don't? Your parents aren't just automatically right about everything. You are you and she is her; you are two different people. She can't just control your entire life because she supposedly 'knows better than you do.' You mother raised you and all, but only you should know what's good for you. She may give you a advice and lead you down a certain path, but in the end, you choose what happens- you choose your own fate. Would you really want to have someone else choose how you live your life instead of yourself? We're unique for a reason.

This is so resonating, 'my body (outer appearance) is not the most important thing about me' should be a mantra that I read and re-read to myself every morning- there still is so much focus on what women should and should not be/look like/ act like etc. (the list is unfathomable) that even we ourselves lose the imperative to see ourselves as multi-faceted, highly complex, not merely superficial human beings. My validation comes partially from the what selected fabrics I choose to place on my body and in so many more other ways i.e my literal voice- just a very beautiful piece of poetry!! I am just sad that a societally-induced internalised misogyny meant that growing up, this was not how I was taught to be woman.

CinnaBunny: Superlative doesn't mean what you think it means; it means "of the highest quality or degree". The word you're looking for is figurative. I finally got my confident and wore a dark shade of green trousers and a pink dress , everyone in my family thought I looked terrible and people stared at me when I went outside but I don’t care.

This was absolutely beautiful. I listened to it multiple times in one sitting because it brought me to tears. I'm a 25 year old woman who still feels like a teenage girl and every one of her 9 things hit me like a brick. It was fantastic! Thank you Melissa, if you read your comments :)

2:10 that guote meant a lot to me, i’m on the cheerleading squad at my school and we had a basketball game last night , they said very hurtful things to me and i ended up crying in the bathroom for 20 minutes.

Caroline Matthews hey, you are great from what I’ve seen, and I’ve seen that you are willing to put your emotions out there on the *internet*, and that’s not the easiest things to do, so get up rub some dirt in it, and kick some a s! :).

As a 15 year old girl this is probably my favourite poem. I love how it acknowledges the different types of girls and tells us that we are all strong. I also love the part about everyone being our sisters. It's easy to forget that sometimes when they are trying to kill you but a good reminder that we still need to be there for them. I may not like some of my sisters, but I'll try and be there for them if that time comes.
