Joan and Melissa Rivers had one of the most celebrated mother-daughter relationships of all time.
An Ivy League graduate, single mother of a teenage son, author, television producer and philanthropist, what was it really like to grow up with comedy legend Joan Rivers as your mother? If you think Joan said some outrageous things to her audiences as a comedian, you won’t believe what she said and did in private. Her love for her daughter knew no bounds-or boundaries. Melissa Rivers joins us to discuss her mother and her new book, The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief, and Manipulation. She shares funny, and poignant observations and stories about the blonde force of nature who raised her and who she called Mom.

I lost my mom a little over four months ago. I was looking for video’s about sadness and grief. My mom liked Joan very much. I think Melissa is very funny also. This has made me laugh. It’s nice to hear funny stories about mom’s. No one loves you like a mother. Hug your mom and laugh with her while you can. Yes it’s hard to know that you can never call her again. To everyone who has lost a mom I’m giving you a gentle hug.

I lost my mom in 2004, and you think about them daily some times it's funny sometimes it's hard... but you get on with living... I list my dad in 2012, and she is right it is the end... the period losing him was losing a great link to her ...he would talk about their 49 years together and about times I don't remember as a young child. Hugs to you all...bit now I see my parents in my granddaughter who is 9 and I only wish she could have met them but I tell her about them...and relive so much if them and my younger years with her and my kids and brothers talking about them and laugh ALOT!

Melissa is so graceful and this is a great interview. Having lost my own mother just a few weeks ago I can see and feel what a matured insight she has into handling intense grief with so much grace while being humorous. Wish you the very best of everything Melissa, and I know for sure, Angel Joan's light is shining on you from above. Loved her and was an ardent fan!

I've never known much about Melissa, but I have to say that after watching this interview and another with Whoopie (also at the 92 Y) my opinion of her could not be higher. Melissa is a terrifically impressive woman. I can see so much of Joan in her, and yet Melissa is entirely her own person. I adored Joan, but I'm sure she was completely overwhelming as a mother. Her personality was as big as she was small. Melissa would have to be strong to survive that and emerge as Melissa and not as Joan's mini-me. I'm truly impressed. Wonderful interview!

Melissa is right on about losing a parent. When I lost my Mom I was and still am numb. I will never get over her passing. My Dad was not hard to miss as he was a terrible mean person who destroyed our family with violence. But when he passed I felt totally alone. I had no Mom or Dad anymore. I had no one to stay with if I lost everything. No one to call when things got rough. I thought my Dad was better than I thought he was. I did call him. I was alone. Even though I was married and had kids of my own. It took several years to get over their loss.
@loriryan2045

I had a similar experience as you did. Dad was an Alcoholic and destroyed our family. I had only one younger brother that was 6 years younger than me. From the time I was 8 years old, I spent most of my childhood trying to protect him. Mom and Dad divorced in 1984 immediately after my Wedding. I was married in May and the divorce was filed for in August. My brother passed away in 2003 when he was 34 years old. My Dad passed away in 2006 when he was 64 years old. He began having brain damage issues from Alcohol Abuse when he was 50 years old. Then he had major blood circulation issues due to smoking. His leg needed to be amputated when he was 58 years old and needed to use a wheelchair. I lost my Mom in March 2020 and miss her terribly. My husband passed away when I was 47 years old in 2010. Mom and I spent all of our free time together over the last 11 years. I feel so very alone every day.

Agree, I love Melissa and she rocks! I'm also so happy to hear what she said about Fashion Police. Kelly and Kathy both used the excuse that the humor wasn't in their taste yet we all knew it was Joan's so how come they couldn't take the heat? I think they definitely acted for themselves and thus didn't act in good faith to Joans's legacy. It just shows that Joan was a true star...and a trailblazer! Joan Rangers forever!
@thingthang2904
@thingthang2904 9 жыл бұрын
Nick Oxborrow Agreed. They used an excuse that went against everything that Joan had set for the tone of the show. "No apologies, it's just jokes, they're not meant to be serious so don't take them that way". Yes, Gulliana shouldn't have said it because she isn't an established comedian and her character usually holds back so it stood out in a bad way. But she said it. And the joke didn't work and people reacted. Fine, let's move on. The show is all about playing with the line and sometimes you cross it and for Kathy (a professional comedian) to publicly show no understanding of that is ridiculous.
@pashazalutski9964
@pashazalutski9964 9 жыл бұрын
+Thing Thang oh yes oh yes. kathy griffin threw the most unfunny tantrum over why she was leaving fashion police. "i don't want to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism". is she out of her mind? how can the FP humor be perceived as trying to pressure women into perfection? isn't it all about making fun of how perfect the celebrities themselves are trying to appear? kathy, my beloved comedian for years, just totally lost it when she said that making fun of looks has no context, as if those jokes are undeserved. of course there's plenty of context, the stars standing in front of paparazzi, puffing their lips and acting narcissistic! couldn't kethy leave without a statement?! unbelievable that someone of her caliber is capable of throwing this kind of unclassy tantrum!
@thingthang2904
@thingthang2904 9 жыл бұрын
Pavel Zalutski yes. And as a fan of Kathy myself (was obsessed with her mid to late 2000s reality show and stand-up specials) I was really disappointed with how she handled everything. If she wanted to leave, fine. But that statement... So pretentious. Lena Dunham apparently helped her write it. Someone who I also like but less so right now.

Melissa, if you’d ever be willing or ready to, I think if you wore a blonde wig in the fashion of your Mom’s hairdo, Fashion Police would again be a huge hit-Because the world sorely misses your Mom and you look just like her. You could have your son wear a brunette wig pretending that he’s you. It’d be incredible if you’d play these roles. You’re so brave. We dearly love you and feel for you. My Mom died on Christmas Eve. My friend’s Mom died on Mother’s Day. We all relate to the loss of our dear Moms. May angels tenderly cradle you.
