This video shows creative mixing tricks for sibilants and breaths in vocal performances. First, Rich recaps how Melodyne distinguishes sibilants from pitched parts and how the Sibilant Balance tool makes full use of that. He then shows how to gain additional control by duplicating the vocal track and removing all sibilants from one track and all pitch information from the other. He then shows how to treat these two tracks separately by applying equalizers, compression, saturation, and time-based processing as needed. Finally, Rich uses the Note Assignment Mode to fine-tune sibilants and bring out some missing consonants.

I watched this a while back, and just revisited it. This is hands down one the greatest programs in recording today. It's not just pitch correction. The ability to take the place, and do a better job than a d-esser, is amazing, and the technique is genius. Great video! 🤘🤘

Yes, this is excellent. I agree with that. But unfortunately it is also part of the truth that up to now Melodyne cannot clearly distinguish between tonal parts and sibilants when you try to use it on a rough Heavy Metal vocal track. I hope that the developers of Celemony will find a way to make this possible anywhen in future. But apart from that Rich's tutorial videos are very good and I like his way to speak and explain very much!

@@celemony Yes, I have tried. And in the meantime I had also contacted Celemony in Germany (I myself am German) and they confirmed that Melodyne has problems in distinguishing between the "roughness" of a Heavy Metal Vocal and real sibilance. And according to them Heavy Metal Vocals have more overtones than smoother voices and this may also lead to misinterpretations of the pitch of a tone. And I must say that I appreciate very much them being honest in these points. For me, this makes Celemony a credible company. If we all know better what we can do with this still wonderful tool and for what we have to find other solutions, we can adapt our editing work accordingly. And I am sure that they are working hard to improve this tool step by step. There are lots of other areas of application we can already use this program for.

This is a great tool tip! Thank you. I'm having a little trouble getting it to work in Studio One however. It seems that when I duplicate the track Melodyne (or S1) somehow links the tracks together so whatever I do on 1 track is duplicated on the other. Any hints? Thx!
@celemony
@celemony 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jim, this is a Studio One thing. In earlier versions, copies were always linked to the original track. More recently, they have introduced the ‘New Clip Version’ command in Studio One that turns a copy into a unique one. If this doesn’t work for you, please contact our Tech Support here: www.celemony.com/support - Thank you!

Is there a way to quickly separate all the sibilants? As I'm going through and tuning, if the sibilants get pitch corrected they become phasey and sound bad.

This is a rubbish reply from @celemony - I was looking for the answer to this same question and after reading this comment and then wading through your info about the different versions still didn't know. So I purchased the editor upgrade - which I have no use for - only to find out my Assistant edition lets me do all this! Honestly would like my money back for that upgrade. It's hardly a 'technical question' given the context of the video - and this entire channel, actually! Also the answer just so no one else wastes money like I did - yes, you can do all of this with the 'Assistant' version.

The sibilant balance tool is not muting the sibilants all the way. Just spent 4 hours trying to get this right and got nowhere. On top of that it is not even detecting correctly. So I had to separate everything manually only for it to not work and sounds like garbage. I could have manually de-Essed several tracks in the time I have wasted.. What am I doing wrong?

@@celemony Thanks for the reply. I thought I posted an update here but it must not have been submitted. It turned out to be the track I was editing. I struggled to get the separation results partly due to existing reverb as well as the vocal track being doubled. I was just really frustrated that day but after chilling out I was able to narrow down the issues, address them and then Melodyne worked brilliantly as I typically come to expect! As with any new tools, at first it is normal to struggle a bit. But this channel has really helped me get past the learning curve. I highly suggest to anyone struggling to use Melodyne to take a deep breath, maybe a little break. And once refreshed try to reverse engineer your problem and more times than not u will discover what u did wrong. But I believe with a tool like Melodyne, making those mistakes early on is part of the learning process. And if you handle the mistake in the right way, with the right approach. It gives you a huge long term advantage over someone who hasn’t made the similar mistake. I know this is pretty much common sense to most of us. But I have seen occasional negative reviews of top notch products like Melodyne, where the reviewer is inexperienced and they just do not know what they are doing. But seeing these video’s with Rich sharing his brilliant editing tricks should be proof enough that we all have so much to learn. The tool can do almost anything we need, but we first must master the tool to have any chance to look as masterful as Rich consistently is in these videos. I think Rich deserves a big raise! Without him, so many people like myself, might have given up. Thanks Rich for showing us the way and what is possible!!
