Rich Crescenti demonstrates some of the power of the ‘Harmonics’ controls in Melodyne studio’s Sound Editor. For this lesson he uses a bass DI signal and processes the track in parallel. First Rich exhibits a trick to clean up the low end by using the ‘Harmonics’ slider to remove all unnecessary information below the fundamental. He then displays the flexibility of the ‘Harmonics’ editor by removing all harmonics except the fundamental and processes that in parallel with the DI. Here he also illustrates how Melodyne can improve the performance of other plugins as well. Finally, he does the same thing with the second harmonic and exhibits how alternate tones can be achieved.

I have tried these two tricks with other bass sounds as well, and it's sensational, whether on a bass synth or on the kick drum, to specifically enhance the desired frequency ranges with more impact. And this technique can truly give a baritone voice a lot of power. Thank you for your amazing videos, Rich!

Dear Celemony, have you considered adding per note harmonics/eq control? This would make it the best and most precise tone shaping eq on the market

Thank for the cool content! Would be cool if in the end you always could let it play and then bybass and activate a few times so we can really hear the difference and compare. Cheers!

So glad you make these valuable tutorials available. That they are concise just adds pleasure to learning. Maybe you will find some time to show how Melodyne can correct the timing and pitch of a classical guitar recorded through a microphone: unlike steel string guitars, lower tension nylon instruments have inherent pitch drift on sustained notes as well as more wow & flutter and artifact. I find them to be the most difficult instruments to record; hence they need the most attention in the mix and master stages.

Thank you for your comment! Editing nylon guitars in Melodyne shouldn’t be much of a difference. If you need assistance, feel free to contact our support team: www.celemony.com/support

@@celemony Can you tell us when the next version of Melodyne will be released? I am hoping a sale after Thanksgiving, like cyber-Monday, will make affordable for me to invest in this amazing program.

Do y'all plan to add undo and redo buttons? Also we need lock buttons for each track to prevent them from being changed!

Nice video, thanks. Be nice if you did the same sort of thing for more conventional-sounding projects, vocals, say, and without the extra plugins.

Quite neat mixing tricks, yes it requres full studio version of Melodyne, but it well worth it. You can make even a cheap bass guitar sound thumpy!

Great. You can not over estimate what this function does for mixing bass. Everyone knows that the topic "how to get your bass right in the mix" is one of the most discussed topics in producer channels. I use melodyne to do the opposite for my played 5string bass: It always has way too much bass. Even a lot around 40 Hz. To tame the huge bass frequencies I just lower the fundamental and all below it. That's all! And most resonant frequencies are gone. It's a 8th world-wonder. No software in the world does this so elegant like melodyne. And on top I reduce the dynamic with the dynamics slider and reduce the note differences with the other slider (forgot the name). Add distortion to taste. With this the bass sits perfectly in the mix. Sure, there are alternative eq-ing methods. 1st. Using a midi EQ that only kicks in and tames the resonances of special notes. 2nd. a dynamic EQ. But none of them come close to melodyne.

My opinion is that your original bass sound would have translated better to small speaker systems, you removed harmonics then added them back with plugins rather than making any attempt to simply use Melodyne to actually shape the timbre via harmonic shaping. My feeling is that the tone you ended with would get lost in a dense mix. The original timbre did have some harshness that would have competed with other instruments, but I would have preferred to see you try to tame them rather than going nuclear. I find your content very helpful and well presented but I don’t share your opinion about this approach at all.
