I want you to get serious about inserting fun back into the #holidays this year.
It might seem odd to have an entire conversation about #fun. But here’s why we have to: most of us aren’t having any.
In fact, it’s gotten so bad that researchers have a term for it: “a fun drought.” You’re not alone - 97% of people want to have more fun.
And wouldn’t it be fabulous if you had an absolute blast with your #family this holiday season?
It is possible. And you’re just the person to make it happen.
On the topic of family, I find it interesting that most of the advice out there is focused on toxic family dynamics and boundaries. If your family is that toxic, the only thing you need to do is make other plans. You’re not required to spend time with them.
But… if you are planning to spend time with family during the holidays, make this the year you bring the fun.
Fun breaks up old dynamics, fun draws people out of their shells, and fun gives you something to talk about other than the weather and how the school year is going.
And laughter is not only great medicine, but it also makes you happier and strengthens your relationships with those you’re having fun with!
Today you and I are getting serious about fun.
In this episode, you’re going to learn the 3 things that get in the way of you having fun - the biggest one being that you don’t plan for it.
So, we are going to discuss how to plan for and have more fun, and I’ll give you all kinds of ideas to consider.
This is the perfect episode to listen to with your family if you’re traveling. It’s appropriate for all ages.
So shake off the dread and pull out the party hats. I’m on a mission to inspire you to have more fun.
Xo Mel
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Why fun is so important for your health and relationships
- Why we are not having fun
- TONS of ideas to spark the fun in your family
- Why the “first follower theory” is a big deal when it comes to fun
- Why Sawyer now regrets the “Dress in Anything But Clothes” game 😂

I'm a mom of 6 ... and I'm the person who gets laughed at because I always bring the fun for everyone. But everyone loves the parties I throw and even cancel plans to be there last moment's notice. It's fun to play games whether young or not-so-young anymore. lol

My parents are two narcissists. I'm 61 and only discovered this a few years back. I have always gone in looking forward to spending time with my family! And end up coming away from the time, in tears for a couple days to a week. I've worked hard to make it fun for the children as well as prepare for adult comfort, and do my part with the food. And there is no shirking on the clean up. Yes, I guess I've been on pins and needles, I could always feel her expectations. Well, we haven't gone back for a few years, during holidays. What I'm finding is that I married one too. Holidays are not fun with two moody boys that only think about themselves. Our finances are EXTREMELY limited and I find that my only choice, as far as I can see, is to do changes in my mind. I have a daughter too, and she is the driven personality with little empathy. This is the first year that I painfully want to have the family, I naively thought I had.....almost to the point of panic.

I got an electric bike! It is so fun! And I got all the gear and everything LOL now I can pedal when I want to, not when I don't, and I can cruise at 20 miles an hour, which is incredibly fast when you're on a bicycle!! I immediately felt like I was 12 again! 👍😆

At our family Christmas, we have games using snowballs. Partner games, catch a snowball in a frying pan, closest to the object on the floor far away, and other such games. Snowballs are foam balls. After competition games are complete we set a timer and have a "snowball fight".

Great podcast Mel. Thanksgiving has always been my mom's holiday and every year she makes it into a huge fun event with a new Thanksgiving carnival theme even though we are all older now. We used to have so many family and extended family members come that she would have to set up tents in the yard, so no one ever felt left out or had to choose between splitting their holiday between both sides. Even though it has become smaller in numbers over the years she still called to tell me she put the turkey balloon dart game together and has the pinata stuffed and ready to go.😊 Your podcast made me think of all the fun Thanksgiving memories I have had thanks to her always going out of her way to make things so special even at her own expense.💛 Wishing you and your family a fun, happy, healthy and blessed Thanksgiving full of memories.🦃🍂 So thankful for all of the amazing lessons that I have learned from you over this past year of my healing journey. I have incorporated so many of them into my daily routine. They just come naturally now. My Mel Robbins favorite though will always be looking for the hearts in my day; because they truly are everywhere and fill me with joy and love every time I find one.♥️

Hearing new perspectives and also new ways of phrasing similar concepts can really help. I also think you’re amazing at ensuring that we get some great takeaways and actionable from guests. I love the way you interact with them and bring out so much of great stuff.

Such great timing for this podcast! Implemented disco during clean up and then made sure that games happened in the afternoon. Best Thanksgiving we’ve had in a while. 😊I gave up on planning activities because it was impossible to please everyone and the enjoyment of the day definitely went down the tubes. Thank you for the kick in the butt I needed to put the effort back into the day!

Mrs Robbins, Happy Thanksgiving to you and your Family and great Podcast! I hope you and your Family are enjoying your new Home! Hoping you might see this comment. Im 37 and have had one of the toughest yrs for sure. And today was rough as it was the first time I DID NOT have a Thanksgiving meal. And the good old days of Family get togethers, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, on Holidays is a thing of the past sadly. All I knew growing up as a kid, and into my early adult life. Very tight knit with my parents of course, and strong Family values. My brother and sis in law have a Thanksgiving Lunch more or less, around 2 pm, because of the kiddos I assume, my niece and nephew. My brother and sis in law havent reached out to me, communicated in a year now. Despite, I still texted them on their Bdays and Anniversary because thats just me, and feel good doing so. My brother did text me about Thanksgiving couple days ago, but I did not attend. Of course it makes my Mom upset that everyones not under one roof. But, both my brother and sis in law hold grudges like no other, they're always "right" and theres no confronting them. I have 2 aunts, one being my Godmother, and 3 uncles, and they did their own thing for Thanksgiving. Of course, I always text them Happy Thanksgiving, etc, and said to my Godmother, "It sure woulda been nice if we were all under the same roof enjoying Thanksgiving together and extend the invite/spread word, that you went to such and such restaurant for Thanksgiving and we could all be there." No reply. After all, the Holidays are about Family right! I just dont get it, and its not like there was a fight, verbal confrontation, with any of our Family. Thats never happened, ever. And on top of this, friends? I think I have them, going back to your previous Podcast. I've never felt so disconnected in all my life! If I wouldnt DM friends, I'd never hear from anyone and thats sad! And whenever I post anything, whether fitness, sports, music, baseball, football, its like crickets. Engagement is not existent, and its not due to anything I've done to anyone. I feel like if I received a message from someone, I'd fall out of my chair Mrs Robbins! I certainly appreciate your time and fingers crossed here! Hoping you see this! Thank you!

I’ll message you Kris! Don’t be alone. Try go to social events even if you don’t want. You may have a good time! You may not & wished your stayed home chilling BUT you’ll have made an effort. Keep with the staying in touch with others. Like you say it makes you feel good with the texts etc. To put this into perspective I met a friend for first time since September 2019 last night ….no reason for not meeting up we just we had pandemic/lockdowns then our own things going on. Turns out she has split with her husband and is having a rough time now a single mum of 3 & I never even knew. I did feel why not send a text just to keep me in the loop but then again I didn’t reach out to her in that time. We had an amazing night catching up over good food & it was like we’d never been apart. She is going through a life changing event and I have dealt with grief & health issues in those 3 years and she had no idea. Real friends are there even if you don’t see/hear them. ❤

Or share a highlights/blooper memory from this year so that we can all hear new family stories along with the old favorites. Hope your family fun plans turn out fab!
