A fun Halloween themed video showing what types of surfboard foam are compatible with different types of resin. Mixing the wrong combination can lead to melting your blank! This can be confusing when getting started with shaping and glassing so I wanted to help visualize the options. I am sharing just the basic information and most common materials used. There are other options not mentioned in this video and additional pros/cons that could be discussed but I wanted to keep it as simple as possible.

Thanks for the video. For a dramatic effect, pour some acetone on an EPS blank (sound on, the melting sizzles) I.e. be very careful having acetone around for cleaning when working with EPS. Other EPS considerations (for a backyarder/hobbyist): Thicker blanks, takes longer to adjust thickness. Probably better to adjust thickness before cutting the outline. It seems harder to shear the rails with cells, thus more touch up work on the rails' edges , or see and feel differences, thus more micro asym patterns (at least for a hobbyist, like me), The speckling of the EPS blank, seems simple but also needs sanding, Rough and light sanding leaves stripes which you'lll see through the glass. Smooth sanding touches the blank. My 2 cents for first few boards. Minimize speckling and go with no color, or a go for a swirl with light colors will camouflage a lot of the freckles/buckshot, or go full opaque (sample glass on left of pieces)

I realize this is an old comment, but I have some really old EPS/epoxy boards that are still perfectly white/clear. PU/PE is much more prone to yellowing, assuming you're using good epoxy/blanks. It's been that way for many, many years. I've been riding both here on Oahu since maybe 1990 or so.

Thanks for the upload. Having done Surfboard ding repairs from ‘86 till around 01, Epoxy started to be used a bit after my time doing repairs.During that time I worked exclusively with P.U. Foam and Polyester resin, M.E.K. Peroxide, Waxed Styrene Surfacing agent. I completely agree with you that the fumes and odour produced by the above mentioned materials is very unpleasant, Very toxic too! and should Only be used in a well ventilated area, also if not properly mixed together to the correct amounts or proportions, the exothermic reaction would be so violent that the resin would begin to smoke up and combust causing a real fire hazard! Although I have no personal experience working with Epoxy Resins and E.P.S. It seems that the best way forward combining the use of P.U. foam and Entropy Epoxy resins and hardener. Thanks 🔥👍🤙 really looking forward for the completion of you daughter’s mini longboard, love the shape of the spoonbill nose and the pin tail it looks Sick! I’ve got a Takayama Scorpion inspired shape myself, it’s a 6’4”, it has a 10” single fin box + f.c.s.quad fins system too. It can be ridden as a Single fin, a 2+1, or a Quad fin set up.👌🤤

Luckily it started to dissolve my cup before I put it on my board😂 if it wasn’t for my bright idea of styrofoam cup it’d be a diff story💀 worst part is , it doesn’t say polyurethane anywhere on it!? @@jakecrumbleful so I think if you want a high gloss finish maybe the super clear art epoxy resin will do the trick. It is super clear because of a blue additive, has UV blocker in it and is self leveling. I used it to finish of a acrylic painting of my wife and it looks like a mirror. Pretty fancy stuff. After I used it to clear coat a wooden Paipo and it shines ✨ Just my two cents. Enjoy!!

I built a board by gluing three sheets of Lowe’s insulation 4’x8x2”, and making some stringers to use a homemade wire cutter. I ended up using poly resin on it and it was eps. I was so bummed when it melted but pressed on anyway. After 5-6 sessions it started taking on water and I would punch to drain and patch again. It lasted me a few months before I used a pu blank and poly resin…..my second board was much better but I did run out of time glassing and had to overcome bubbles. Getting ready for another one. Thx.

Super informative and the visual aids really helped communicate the points. From a performance/functional standpoint, what are the differences in how a board handles and feels with PU v. EPS? Similarly, does the resin have any impact to performance or are the effects mostly cosmetic and ability to work with the resin? I've often heard reference to epoxy boards feeling chattery, and I've experience that myself, but if epoxy is only referring to the resin, does the resin truly have that much affect on how a board feels? I've definitely noticed I prefer how my PU feels: it sits more in the water v. on top of it ("epoxy").
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 2 жыл бұрын
I personally can’t tell a major difference in the water. EPS makes the board lighter and more buoyant. Epoxy is stronger and has more flex.

Luckily I haven't had this problem but I've always been very careful about not letting any debris on the board during the glassing process and wearing gloves so the oils from my hands don't get on it. I clean the board with denatured alcohol before doing the fill coat. My epoxy resin is greenlight surf supply's brand. That's my process, not sure that helps.

EPS foam is not compatible with polyester resin. You have to use polyurethane foam with poly resin

EPS makes boards too light. I remember when I made my first board (and so far only time) with EPS and epoxy. The result was a very very light board, hard to stand on it. I thought it was my problem. Recently, I bought a foamy for summer and again. EPS. too light and unstable. I'm going to glass it one day with epoxy (thanks for showing the wonderful mess it makes poly on EPS) but I guess it will end up as light and soft as my first self made board: a piece of expensive decoration

What kind of epoxy resin did you used? What´s better and worse?

@@enriquegomez-ceballosgoya7142 Common epoxy. If I remember, there's epoxy for surfboards that doesn't yellow, and normal for construction epoxy that yellows.

Hi¡ I proved epoxy resin with slow hardener and my results were, that after 3 days the resin ate the EPS, but not too much.

Realize well that epoxy contains quite toxic components that may cause bad allergic reactions. Be aware!

Do you get the same fumes as pu resin if you don't get the smell using epoxy resin?
