Local 17 5th-year apprentice Kerry Sampson is the first female SMART sheet metal member in the state of Rhode Island. Watch as she discusses how she got into the trade, transitioning from juggling non-union hairdresser and make-up artist jobs with minimal to no benefits, to a union job with great pay and benefits, a real career path, better work/life balance and retirement security.

Kerry, I am very impressed with your drive and determination. I think you are going to be a great sheet metal worker. I grew up in Riverside and living next door was old Charlie Schifino. He too was a sheet metal worker who got his start at Quonset Point Naval Base. He and his crew were famous for a portable building concept they developed and is known as the QUONSET HUT. Charlie was very talented with his snips and construction knowledge. He gave me a few pairs of his own snips that I want to pass onto you. I know he will be proud that you will have them in your tool box. Have Jay contact me. Mike

Lol I’m guilty of the exact same thing! Every job I drive by that I’ve done I point it out to my wife and kids! And it only gets worse the longer you do this wonderful trade! Keep up the amazing job never stop learning!

I have a question I’m trying to get into the sheet metal trade and they are offering me $15.70 in Florida just wanted to know is that pay even worth it?
