my mother used to make these in a big ole pot when I was a child and I've kept making them. She used molasses instead of brown sugar and a touch of vinegar as well for the seasonings, no ketchup. She also sauteed onions and added those which meant they cooked into the beans while the pot was in the oven. While we could not afford bacon then, I DO put bacon on mine now!

My family makes a very similar version, just add a dash of W sauce and a squirt of mustard and you're all set! We sometimes add a medium sauteed onion, depending on how many picky kids are eating.

My mom did these the same way but she added a little bit of mustard too. OMG they were some good!!!

Put butter or bacon in everything you can't go wrong.. Ketchup, mustard, fried onions, molasses n brown sugar mix, bottom bacon, top bacon... delicious.. My moms recipe since the 30s 40s 50s when I took over making them.. She's 91 now and it's still my job.. But I love it. Going to try with ketchup since everything i have been making from your recipes MeMe are so good...

I make baked beans with sweet baby rays bbq sauce and onions. Bake them low at 4am so i don't heat the house up mid day.

I also prefer Showboat brand. Very few groceries carry them. Terrific recipe! Thank you for sharing.

So funny! I used psychology on my kids too. When they were toddlers & I’d cook a Ham & Spinach Frittata, I renamed it “Green Eggs & Ham”. Worked like a charm😉Another trick is to involve them someway in the meal prep bc they are more likely to like things they helped make.

I've always loved VanCamp's over Showboat. I could eat VC pork and beans right out of the can cold! I would add a little mustard & Worcestershire sauce and definitely some onions (either chopped Vidalia or minced dried onions) to the baked beans. We've bought the baked beans at Food Lion deli (they have a Meal Deal--you can choose 2 sides with a fried chicken) and they have a smoky taste. We love them, so I'm going to have to figure out how to get that flavor in my baked beans!

You cook so much like my mother cooked. I sure miss her good cooking. She always cooked big meals like you cook. I got my cookbook last week and I love it.

I'm a dedicated Showboat fan, too!! Your beans look yummy. I add onions, bell pepper, sorghum molasses (or brown sugar), Hunt's, dry mustard--then top all of it with plenty of bacon. I love that soupy goo you get on top when they bake a good long while. :) xo

I always made mine with Grandma Brown beans. Minced onion, brown sugar, blackstrap molasses and of course bacon. But we can’t get Grandma Brown because they don’t have staff to work. So I will try these.

I like Van de Camp beans , but I won’t eat them with HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP in them! Other countries have made High Fructose corn syrup illegal to put in food!

My mother used to make the best baked beans and they where always a hit at any family gathering. She would add onion powder, garlic powder, ketchup, chili powder and brown sugar to hers and bake them in the oven. I just cook them on the top of the stove now for my husband and I and I add a tablespoon of BBQ sauce and dehydrated onions. It only takes about 15 minutes for them to thicken and they are delicous.
