Our families are from St. Louis. Mom sent me across the alley once a week through the back door of the bakery to get a Gooey Butter Coffeecake. When we left St. Louis we came across the recipe you use. We’ve been making it for years for Easter. We dust our gooey butter coffeecake with sifted powdered sugar.

Gooey Butter Cake (I’m from St. Louis). Two other great historic St. Louis deserts are Mrs. Ledbetter’s chocolate pie (coconut pecan chocolate custard) and Abe Lincoln Pie (fluffy eggnog-ish pie with chocolate grated on top). Both recipes were printed in the St. Louis Post Dispatch “back in the day”.

The corners are my favorite!!! We’ve always called them ooey gooey bars. I usually do chocolate base and add about a cup of peanut butter to the topping. Oh my word. I’ve used strawberry on the bottom and vanilla on top, I’ve added pumpkin pie filling to the top. The possibilities are endless. So goood!!!! I’m loving my cookbook. Such a joy to find a lot of the same recipes that I grew up with. Y’all take care!!!

Hi Meme- I just made cream cheese croissant bars tonight for Labor Day picnic tomorrow. My recipe is similar but the base is 1 or 2 rolls of crescent rolls spread out on a 9 x 13. Cream cheese mixture is 2 bars CC and 1 cup sugar, 1 egg and vanilla. Then spread on top of crescents, and then add crescent rolls to the top. This time I added fresh blueberries in the cream cheese and put some in sugar and placed a few on top. When it’s done, you can sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on the top, but I didn’t use cinnamon today since I did blueberries. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!

You are an amazing woman. I don’t know how old you are, but I’m sure you might be a couple years older than me, I am 75. I enjoy cooking myself but I noticed in the last couple years I have slow down. I wish I had your energy. You remind me so much of my mother every Sunday she will cook up a storm invite her 4 children and spouses and the grandkids. Sadly, dad passed away and four years later mom came down with cancer. 2 years later, mom passed away. We’re all Italian. We are three girls and one brother every holiday we keep the tradition going on with the nieces and nephews and the grandchildren they all enjoy the tradition. His girls enjoy doing. Thats Gooey Butter cake. I first heard if it in the 80s but Paula Deen made it famous in the late 90s/early 2000s on tv & in her restaurant. It is delicious!

My mother was from Roanoke, VA. She used the word doololly as a substitute when she didn't know the name of something, " Hand me the doololly. " As a child I saw a woman with a bee hive hairdo. I told Mama that she had her hair doolollied up. Mama laughed about that for the rest of her life. Thanks for the memory. Your recipe looks delicious. I look forward to trying it.

Cream Cheese Bars is what i call these. Been making for years. I use a box of poud cake and follow the directions on the box but add 2TBS of butter and 1 teasp. of vanilla for my base . My family and friend's always want these at our gatherings. ❤

I use to cook and hear All my grandma's stories but about 4 years ago she had a really bad stroke and cant talk or walk very well so we can't do all the fun stuff we use to. She sits with me in the kitchen and watches me just like I used to watch her. About 3 weeks ago, we lost my grandpa.. and it's really hard. So, watching your videos really helps pull me out of my reality even for a minute, so thank you so much!

That recipe is so easy and looks so good!!! Btw, I have the same exact model stove you've got. The trick to setting the timer is to hold it down. It'll jump by tens of seconds instead of going second by second.

Love this. I got this recipe 35 years ago from a sweet lady in our church in Goodview VA. She called them cheese bars. We renamed them Mrs. Prather's cheese bars in her honor. They are still a family favorite.

My mom used to make this she called it gooey butter cake and she always used butter pecan cake mix. Loved them but very rich. Never thought to use lemon and I will try that my grandkids love lemon anything. Loved your story about these thank you so much.

Thanks Miss MeMe for sharing this! I’m from St. Louis and have been making this cake for 50 years. Your version is exactly like mine except for one ingredient. I’ve never seen anyone add that 2nd stick of butter to the filling but you can bet I’m going to try it next time! One thing I also do sometimes (not part of the original recipe) is to sprinkle a layer of toffee chips over the crust before adding the filling. It adds a nice caramel flavor! ❤
