That looks great. Reminds me of my moms desserts. You could put that frosting on pound cakes too. Awesomely delicious n rich Funny side note. My mom one time wanted divinity icing on a angel food cake. The frosting was too heavy and literally collapsed cake. It was a big mess, but dang it was still good. ❤

My dad adored this icing when he was alive. He knew the work it took. We always added a bit of cream at the end to give it a smooth consistency. Love this recipe! Thanks for sharing it!

Loving your videos! Suggestion: instead of water OR milk.. try buttermilk. I've done this for decades, and it is truly delightful! From one southern cook (Mississippi! ) to another.. yum. And LOTS of it😂😂😂😂

I just made this tonight. Man….it’s delicious. The cake part is so fluffy n light n caramel crust frosting is out of this World. If I had a tip…add some milk on end of making frosting. Mine was slightly hard❤

My mother in law also went by the name MeMe and she was known in Marietta, Ga for her delicious caramel cake! She made a praline type icing using granulated icing, butter, and the only canned milk she’d use was Pet milk. I’ve never been able to duplicate her icing. I’m definitely going to try your recipe and I’m waiting to get your books!

Mrs. Meme, I want you to know you are my favorite cook, and also my favorite teacher. Ive seen 4 different videos on this cake and you are the first one to give clear instructions about the evaporated milk and even the amount of brown sugar in the smaller box. I truly appreciate your attention to details. you have saved me alot of time and stress. For some reason others say carnation milk or whatever, but dont specify which kind! This is really good on oatmeal cake, too!

When I make a boxed cake mix i add an extra egg, butter instead of oil, and milk instead of water!! This cake you made reminds me of a cake made by an RN i worked with back in the 1970s. She called it a sweet cream cake,made from scratch. The icing was browned lightly in the broiler,had brown sugar and coconut in it. She also would make a chocolate cake like the Texas sheet cake. Did you ever make an oatmeal cake? Its very good. Also a prune cake.

My grandmother taught me to use the water test, and that’s what I still use today!

I agree with you about the butter cake mix. Plus, I was bragging on the cake squares a friend made for my students when she helped us put on a mock wedding for our Family Living class we used to have. She told me she also uses the same cake mix!!

That icing is a labor of love!

Looks wonderful! My momma used to make an applesauce cake with caramel icing. It was always delicious, but the icing consistency always varied from just right to too thick to too runny. That's one reason I use a candy thermometer for cooked icings and candy. It is better for me than judging a hard or soft ball.

I grew up on Imperial/Dixie Crystal sugar in the south. Unfortunately when I joined the military I was mostly overseas and the grocery (commissary) only carried domino brand. I'm so glad to be back in the south with Imperial/Dixie Crystal. Like you, I believe there really is a difference and will buy only that brand of sugar!

Another tip for you on a box of cake..your right..if it calls for water..use milk. AND if it calls for eggs..add one extra egg to the batter..if it is just egg whites..one more egg white. And we all know how you love butter..when it calls for oil..replace it with the same amount of butter as it calls for oil..thought you would like that bit of information. Have a very Happy Easter..what is left that is. And God bless you.

I make my own brown sugar with molasses and cane sugar. It’s absolutely amazing and you can make it light or dark.

This brings back memories of my mom. My Dad's favorite cale was a white cake with caramel frosting. And he was so picky, he wouldn't eat box cakes. So, ,my mom only made homemade cakes. And that caramel frosting...It was sweet, but oh so good. Now, if i was making this, i would added a little sea salt on the top. :) I miss my mom's baking. have a Blessed and safe weekend!
