I once saw an amateur documentary of World War I Veterans from 1994 titled "The Last Doughboys." In that documentary, many of the veterans were about the same age as him but none of them sounded as youthful as him.

Of course . Everyone who was part of that war reacts with complete emotion. Weather it’s obviously holocaust survivors to American soldiers and liberators of camps . Russian soldiers .. everyone.

What an absolutely touching story. The emotions he displayed effected me directly and he really got his point across. “Those who the war effected the greatest, talk about it the least” so true.

Listening to him cry really hurts. I hear folks brag about being tough. He had to be at 20 yrs old. I am forever grateful for those that served.

Whenever I watch these videos . I always think of that line. Hard times create tough men . Tough men make easy times . Easy times make weak men . Weak men make hard times . They are the greatest generation there was. Right next to the founding fathers

Just an Idea, have ya'll thought about making other channels dedicated to vets from other wars? For example: Memoirs of Korea, Memoirs of Vietnam. I think that would be really cool and interesting.

Pretty sure they have their hands full with just doing these and the whole point is to do individuals in WW2 before they pass..

@@theyeticlutch3486 Yeah, but once the WW2 vets pass on the other veterans will still be alive. The project can continue basically the same, but under a different name, I suppose

@@TeddyBergan if you look up Big and Rich 8th of November documentary, you can watch a cool story from a Vietnam vet. They went back to Vietnam where his company got killed and he was the only survivor and he buried his boots there

I met a Korean vet once while working at Roundtable pizza. I talked to him for like an hour or so. He had some crazy stories. He told me at night they would do bansai type trumpet charges and just mass charge the USA lines and hundreds of chinese would die for no reason. He said nights were the worst. He said they were poorly equiped and poorly trained. Makes sense because Mao sent in the "repatriated" Nationalist armies.

My one neighbor that would always help my family and always let us into his home was in the navy during the war, he never talked much about his service but I know he was on at least 2 ships that where sunk. I joined the merchant marine years later and can only imagine what he went through as a kid.

I'm looking at him and having a hard time believing he could have been there during WWII. He looks so youthful! His story was amazing and one I wasn't aware of. As always, I'm grateful for these stories and grateful for fantastic channels like this one, that help preserve the first person stories of one of the most important times in human history.

Hevynly nope men some actually lied about their age but temper he was almost 18. So yes he was in the war.

@@juliemerritt5144 Back during WWII, they needed as many men as they could get so recruiters often looked the other way when boys lied about their age to get into the military. The youngest known recruit was only 14 when he was enlisted.

I watched a documentary about the last mission and the situation on the ground in Japan on the last day of the war. One of the bombers was named Boomerang. I also have a book called Japan’s Longest Day which talks about what happened on August 15, 1945 in Japan. The coup to keep fighting while the emperor was making the decision to surrender.

My father also became an aviation cadet in 1943. He only qualified to be a radio operator. He served in C-46's and C-47's in China-Burma-India. He was lucky to have served the effort overseas, without facing AAA or fighters. Of course, there is always danger flying in wartime conditions. Their cargo was always gasoline and/or ammunition.

My granddad I was a green beret(5th group) for 24 years. I've always wanted to talk to him about his 3 tours in Vietnam but my dad told me not to ask him about it.

Same here! My grandfather was at the liberation of Dakau. He never talked about it even to his kids or wife but I found out a few years after he died that he was there with the 157th infrantry regiment. I respected and loved my grandfather because of how soft spoken and kind he was and the knowledge that he was there was an incredible thing to me. God bless the greatest generation. May the peace hard fought for by them be kept by their children and so on.

He definitely explained it so well that I never thought of it that way. @3:40 he said "they gave me much more than I gave them" now looking back at my 23 years as an Army JAG Officer I can clearly see YES the Ay gave me much more than what I gave them as well. If I could do it all over again I would change a darn thing other than slowing time down because looking back at it my time in service went by too quick

My paw paw was in the army during world war II and I missed my chance to hear his story. I was too young and just wasn't interested in learning about the war. I would give anything to be able to hear him tell his story now...
