Stood in line for 2 hours (around midnight) in front of the McDonald's in Moscow in January 1991. It had recently opened and my Russian associates thought it would be a novel experience to eat at McDonald's with an American.

@@thoyo I was there for business, to explore joint ventures in film and animation productions. Everyone I met was warm and friendly (unlike the people of some European countries I've visited). I was there when the 50 and 100 Ruble notes were outlawed, so everyone who had cash in those denominations lost that wealth. People who did not trust the banks and held their money at home lost everything. Many committed suicide. I was having dinner with a married couple in their early 40's when that news broke. They were both PhD's who taught at the university. They had $50k Rubles in hand that they had saved to buy an apartment (apartments were hard to find so when you found one you had to pay on the spot or lose it). Their reaction to losing their savings was minimal. I asked them why, as I would have been outraged. Their response was "this is Russia". I'll never forget that. A beautiful people who have been crushed by lifetimes of suppression.

@@astraltraveler257 Thanks for responding. Did anything come of your animation venture? So sad that they were used to such horrible governance. Hopefully things change sooner rather than later.

@@thoyo This was around the time "The Pebble And The Penguin" was produced. Directed by the Russian version of Walt Disney. A wonderful human being. The problem was that all animation was funded by the government. Perfection was the standard and timeliness was not part of the equation. So in the end the conclusion was the gifted Russian 2D animators would not be able to adjust to capitalistic production timelines. Sadly. The second issue was the Russian mob. There was no way to consistently project payments to the mob for shipping materials in and out of Russian. That said, it was exhilarating having a joyful dinner and drinking vodka with a table full of large and powerful men who would think nothing of breaking your neck if that was was required.

and a russian accent in english, which proves this theory i have, that if you immigrate after the age of 11/12, you will always have an accent
@CROWNZI
@CROWNZI Жыл бұрын
@@chronicillz1879 Thats not particularly right , it depends on how often do u engage yourself with your previous main language and how much time u invest into improving the pronounciation. If you look at players from NBA and NHL that are Russian and immigrated during the years of their career you will notice a significant change in their accents , they would almost sound fully american and if you would try to make them speak Russian it will be pretty bad. It all depends on the time that u spent in foreign country.
@chronicillz1879
@chronicillz1879 Жыл бұрын
@@CROWNZI yes youre right but you can not get rid of it FULLY, lex friedman is a perfect example of this, im sure 99% of his interaction after immigrating has been in english, he grew up with all americans surrounding him, but he still has an accent some 30 year years later. anyone who immigrates over the age of 13, even if you drop them smack dab in the middle of america, will still have an accent, for the rest of their lives

The Pepsi / navy story is because Pepsi had been selling their drinks in the USSR since the late 70s, it had a huge monopoly and then lost it once the country opened up. However, the reason they got a small navy fleet was because the USSR couldn’t technically pay Pepsi because it was against the constitution of the USSR to trade currency with the capitalists. They got around this at first by trading for stolynicha vodka but after the soviets invaded Afghanistan and public opinion in the west of the USSR tanked, sales also tanked and the amount of Pepsi the USSR wanted far exceeded the amount is stoli that the Americans wanted. Many bartering solutions were worked on over the years and one of the most famous was transferring ownership of a number of soviet navy ships to Pepsi, who then transferred ownership to international metal recyclers. The ships were all old and barely sea worthy. Unfortunately there was no Pepsi fleet sailing out of St Petersburg 😃

I'm going to have to educate myself as to exactly what the hell happened since I was a teenager in the 90s. I was 13 in 1990 and we had Pizza Hut commercials with Russian Presidents, I remember watching that massive concert in Moscow on MTV w/ Metallica, Black Crowes etc and it seemed we were turning a corner in relations. Or atleast that's the way my 13 yr old eyes saw it. Got busy w/ life(bad excuse) and now here we are.

As for Pepsi, he’s wrong. Pepsi Cola came to the USSR back in 1980 and was available in most of the grocery stores throughout the country no matter the region. So I remember myself buying a 0,45 l bottle of Peps once in a while back in 1984 when I was in Crimea.

I am from the same generation and remember those times being a child. Now Mcdonalds, KFC, Starbucks have gone from Russia but the businesses, which have developed here for 30 years, changed owners and continue to operate under other local names: “Vkusno i tochka” (translation: Tasty. Period), “Rostics”, “StarsCoffee”. I am sitting in one of these newly branded “KFC” right now, all the menu, concept and even interior with slogans in English remain the same) I think it’s a unique situation in human history) Remember my words: some day we will again see huge lines to a newly opened first MCdonalds which has returned to Moscow 😂
