For people unfamiliar with the Thrifty's chain, they were beloved by kids all over LA because they all had an icecream counter where you could buy a single scoop cone for like 15 cents (in the early '80s).

I think it might’ve been 25 cents, but the boomers would tell us how ice cream used to cost them a dime. If I was lucky I used to get a double scoop with black cherry and rainbow sherbet. Rite Aid took over thrifty and still sells the ice cream.

I'm from Inglewood, and remember them vividly. Growing up, my parents took us to the Thrifty on La Brea for ice cream!! Its an O'Reilly Auto Parts now. I looked for the the sign on the floor of the entrance, that one was removed.

I was born in Encino 1964. I grew up in Canoga Park. I went to Limerick Elementary, Columbus Jr High, and then Chatsworth High. I was a bouncer at Fantasia in Northridge in the late 80s and early 90s. My sister was a bartender at The Red Onion, now called BJ's on Canoga Ave. I do remember that story about Adam. I also remember that sad picture of Adam on the cover of the Daily News. It was a huge photo. I totally understand your pops feelings about that picture. I felt the same way. My thoughts and prayers to Adam's family. On a lighter note. Does anyone remember the Teen Center on Victory Blvd. They had a teen dance club that we hung out at for years. They also had BMX races there. I remember meeting Slash from Guns and Rose's there. He was just a kid named Saul back then.

I moved to LA in 1994 and lived in Studio City most of my years there. Your traffic story made me laugh because I remember driving back from Westwood one night at 2am and being stuck in a traffic jam on the 405/Sepulveda Pass. I was thinking "where the hell are all these people going at this time of night??!!" I'm glad I no longer live there because 24/7 traffic would make me go crazy. But I love watching your videos of the Valley and seeing all the places I remember. That was a very sad story about Adam. it happened before I moved there so I never knew about it. Thank you for remembering him.

Thanks! I have started a special playlist just for your videos. I spent over 30 years in the SFV, till we moved to Northern California a year ago. I’m glad you’re including even a few negative things that happened there, because people should be aware of it. I used to work at five star veterinary in Sylmar, I shopped at that dollar tree, and didn’t notice the thrifty entrance. I am learning so much! You should check with the guys at the valley Museum that are preserving old signs and things of the valley. I think they’re by the Van Nuys airport now. Maybe they would help preserve the thrifty entrances. I am loving these walks down memory lane and, it’s nostalgia that I can look at again and again. Love it. 🙏🏻🥰🙌🏻

Great episode, as always. We really were gifted with architecture and design that had so many cool, resonant elements. So much of it has been lost gradually over the past 30 or so years, but it's increased at an incredible rate over the last 3 years. I hate to say it, but I expect it will nearly all be gone in the next 10 (or less). What it's being replaced with is not even worth acknowledging. You never know when you're living through a golden era, as it turns out we were not all that long ago. It's absolutely heartbreaking to watch all signs of it being extinguished, but taking a broad view I suppose it would be more sad to have never experienced it. Please keep up the documentation. The era we're living through now is very bittersweet but also important.

What struck me about this episode is we are now at #23???? Wow. I remember Valley Pres because my GF at the time worked there. This would have been around 1980-81. She was an RN and worked in the Trauma Ward per diem. I wonder if the old Thrifty store that used to be at Vanowen and Van Nuys Blvd. (or is it Victory?) has the logo on the ground at the entrance as well. At least you have documented this on video. I agree with you about filming as much as you can. I wished I would have taken more pics in the Valley when I lived there. I am now 68 and in two years I may start my own KZfaq channel. I am thinking of calling it "Seventy from the Seventies". What do you think?

The realtor probably paid less giving out ice cream than he would renting a billboard. Plus tax write-offs; he was probably getting free gas for personal use. 19:01 An indoor no smoking sign... you don't see those anymore. My local mall had all the ashtrays converted into plant holders in the late 90s. And by "converted" I mean they put plants in them. For years people clearly saw plants in ashtrays but the next generation just saw plant holders. I asked a few kids if they knew and they had no idea and were fascinated. They didn't even know you could smoke inside. That mall was torn down over 10 years ago now. I got to shoplift from it as a kid and also work security there just after high school. Fun times. I also met my wife there. I love your channel and wish you all the best! Thanks for another great upload.

My Mom bought my first baseball bat in Thriftys. My first skateboard (with a removable scooter handle) was from Stop n Go. Many years later I worked at that Stop N Go right before they sold all their locations to Circle K. When I got the skateboard I remember the restaurant in the same parking lot was Wiernerschnitzel. Now it's a Mexican food joint, but the exterior is still the same after all these years.

Your father was absolutely right about that. Terrible story. To steer things back to more fun things: did watching Terminator 2 remind you of the wash/ river close to your backyard? I know it’s a different location but you must have felt the same? 😎 I always thought the LA river was a sewer, but if I understand correctly it’s to deal with the heavy precipitation? And Kurt….that Thrashin’ cap…. Damn, so rad! 🤟🏼

Mike Glickman was the realtor who had the ice cream truck - and to answer your question, it probably didn't pay off as Glickman and his company filed for Bankruptcy in the early 90's. Extravagant spending was cited as one of the reasons for his bankruptcy, which he blamed on the real estate market downturn at the time.

That K-Mart was a Zody's, then a Sporting goods store, then the K-Mart. It's a Spirit Halloween store during Halloween now. Down the street on SF Road is a street named Cornel and a little strip mall. Where the strip mall is now, used to be the Cornell Theatre. That's where a Teenage Tim Burton used to go watch cheap sci fi movies as a kid. Tim attended Burbank High School behind the K-mart. Up the street from Cornell is McCambridge park. The Gym there was featured in Back to the future. The Gym entrance is on Glenoaks blvd. Across the street from McCambridge off of Glenoaks is University street. Halfway up on the right is the Wonder Years house, and Winnie Coopers across the street. You can clearly see the Burbank mountains in the show opening.

Around 9-10 I was home alone after school and someone knocked on the door, I asked who it was, and some man said "open the door and find out" ... ok...I went into panic mode and hid and was frantically calling my mom at work crying. I hid for awhile eventually coming out to check. About a week later, we get a letter in the mail from a realtor...Saying he was sorry and apologized, he didn't think about the situation until later. lol.

I love watching your videos! I grew up in Sylmar in the 80's & 90's. Fun fact; my mom owned a beauty salon on the corner of Balboa and Yarnell, right across the street from where Michael Jacksons' Chimp "Bubbles" was boarded and I got to hold/ meet him.. The chimp, not MJ. lol

I'm sorry about the traffic for you! I live in the valley and I don't actually experience much traffic(not during rush hour) unless I'm in the downtown area. The weekends can be hit or miss. Thanks for your valley videos I love them!!

Funny thing about Kmart. In Australia a lot of Target stores are becoming Kmart whereas in the USA Kmarts are becoming Targets

Left the valley with my husband in 84. One day we were at at light on Reseda Blvd. I looked at my husband and said how much time will we waist if our lives in traffic if we stay.. I recall how magical Cal was in the 50s 60s 70s.

It’s wild, I grew up in a very small town in central Michigan, and on a lake where many of the houses didn’t have full time residents, but were weekend places stayed at maybe once a month. So I never had interesting places right nearby that I have cool memories of like this. But even having no memories of these in this video, it’s still fascinating to me, because I wish that had dud have these places growing up. Interesting too, both K-Mart and Comerica Bank (that I briefly saw in a shot) are both things that started in Michigan. I’ve lived in Central Florida the past 25 years, and we used to have K-Marts here, but have never had Comerica banks. At least not that I know of. Yet they’re all the way out in California. Wild.

I have been to that thrift store before it was Goodwill. I drove across the valley to go there. I never noticed the Thriftys door mat in front. Wow. The Kmart on Sherman way and Coldwater went down. It died a slow death. It was vacant for a while. They fenced it off and now they look like they will build on it. The Kmart off of Townsgate in westlake/1k oaks has been vacant for many years. I thought for sure they would have done something with it.
