Memphians have heard a lot about the city's crime crisis and education crisis, but Mayor Young said addressing its population crisis is a new priority.

The first thing is to find a way to lower crime in the city.

#1 - Lower the Crime, #2 - Time to attract business #3 - Re-Imagine/Re-Develop/Re-Brand Memphis like Atlanta did and like Nashville. My parents recently moved and are outside of Memphis. In 2004, I wanted to stay in Memphis but got nothing but employment rejection letters. My former employer purchased a Memphis corporation and relocated me to their city. And, when the job ended, I moved to Atlanta and started over. Now I live in New York City and still don't want to come back to Memphis because of the crime.

I don’t know why he say “Memphis needs you” why? To grow old and be a nobody? To wait and get robbed? To be an innocent bystander and get shot? Why stay there? Those who want better will move out of Memphis, TN.

Left in 2005. Only go back to visit family for a few hours. Why should people build themselves up there only to have it taken away from them?

Literally nobody moves to Memphis because they want to live in Memphis. The only people who move here are people who are forced to do so because of their job. Or because they have nowhere to go. And with remote working now a thing, many workers can live across the country even if they have a job based in Memphis. The simple and true reason is crime. And crime is not going to ever get any better until we have a DA and a local government who put the criminals in jail and KEEP them in jail.

I’m from Memphis who recently moved to Atlanta who has accepted me with open arms and treated me very well. Couldn’t make many friends in Memphis, the “haterade juice” is on a different level in Memphis, jobs aren’t the best, the streets are terrible, the school system sucks, a lot of the people are slow and don’t focus on familism rather they always try to get over on somebody, even if that person doesn’t have much. Not necessarily happened to me, but I’ve seen it happen to others. I personally had many downs than ups in that city and I don’t plan on going back.. Ever.

The Memphis mayor said crime is high because young people don't have opportunities. So those are the only 2 choices? Be given "opportunities" or commit crime?

Get out of the city while you can. Homes are going to be bought by outsiders and the market will just continue to worsen... And the crime is only getting worse

For many years now Memphis has been in decline in more ways than just population. The only ones to blame are the elected local officials. No one in decades has done a thing to reverse this steady decline. I now have come to believe that this is on purpose. The huge number of below income families and number of poverty level citizens are their votes. Make Memphis prosper and have a city with majority of households at or above the national income level and say goodbye to a lot of votes and their elected positions in the local government. You have got to have the right people in local government that truly want to reverse this decline and make the city more prosperous. The state also is responsible as well. Not just local. When I was a young teenager we went to Opryland. Back then Nashville was small town and Memphis was the booming big city. At some time way back then the state decided Nashville is the Capitol and should be the big city in Tennessee. So then funding was directed to building up Nashville and less funding was being allocated to Memphis. Over 50 years i saw areas aroind Memphis developed and then decline as another area developed and decline. All of these suburban type areas that declined had something in common. Build a mall, approve lots of apartments to be built and in a x amount of years the neighborhoods will be horrible. Local and state knew this. But kept the same thing happening to the neighborhoods as the different areas around Memphis were developed. North it was Raleigh Springs Mall lots of apartments. Souh it was Southland mall and lots of apartments. East it was mall of memphis lots of apartments. Next was Hickory Hills turn followed by Cordove/Wolfchase. Eveb though you see each neighborhood decline...the new ones were built the same way. A mall and lots of apartment complexes.

some of the negative comments below , it takes time and efforts to make changes for the better, crimes happen in every city in the country, not just in Tn, Memphis , there is no perfect city anywhere

Don’t worry, New Madrid will solve the problem all together 😄 Jokes aside tho, I don’t see any hope in saving the city. At this point, the only thing Memphis is good for is the pyramid. This is a repeat of Detroit. Besides, it won’t be long until Memphis is annexed into the Nashville Metropolitan Area so I don’t see why fixing Memphis now is going to matter. If you want to change the city, make it prettier. Stop relying on the things you’ve had for years now. Get an actual skyline. Make it beautiful. MAKE BETTER ROAD SYSTEMS. I swear I almost died on I-40 a few times before
