The other point is that he was the only person doing the right job. MIB isn't a military, it doesn't go out shooting everything that moves. They are a police force. Those soldiers went in like a squad of executors, clearing out aliens, instead of assessing them and determining if there is a threat. He went in and assessed. He did what an MIB agent should do, think first, evaluate threat, and respond. He acted like a good police officer, and that's what MIB wants.

Greatest scene in the film which explains difference between "Education" and "Smarts" In the film, you have an ENTIRE gaggle of highly trained men who don't ask questions, don't contrive grievances and don't bother looking for practical solutions. The soldiers are given chairs that serve no ergonomic purpose, But James is able to discern practical solution by stealing a table. At the shooting range, soldiers empty mags firing on all creatures. While J fires one round and largely gives no qualms about suspicious characters; As a cop he's taught to control his fire in public.

@@erenesqandarrazor8706 Wrong again, how you use stuff is also taught to you. The "smart" indicators is how fast you can learn a new knowledge, how fast and how much data your brain can process. Street smart here is just you've learnt stuff that is taught on the street. In order to make it to the top of any "education", you 99% have to be smart yourself in order to distinguish yourself from the rest. It's just that in this case, that kind of smart is not needed. You're street smart, how would that help you if people need you to fix a nuclear reactor? You can't comprehend the knowledge of that reactors, how can you fix it? How can you "use" stuff if you can't understand the stuff? Your failure is defining the word alone crumbles your argument.
@PhotoKenji
@PhotoKenji 2 жыл бұрын
@@erenesqandarrazor8706 I totally agree with you, educated does not mean smart, educated can be dumb. Smart is the way you think and the way you treat everything in a more flexible way. Enough though fixing a nuclear reactor requires knowledge, you are smart enough to know you need to learn the operation of a reactor, rather than just educated to fix a reactor in a dumb way. This World needs smart people who can educate themselves but not educated dumb people.

@@Mishimakazumato There's lots happening in first scene, but the core theme is "questioning authority". J questions Zed why they are here, and the Cadet answers with a non-answer simply to appease authority. Zed's nod towards him is priceless. At 1:30, the facial expression on the Cadet is smug/confident looking at J. Once they get into the written test, J drags table towards himself to help write which is a good idea. Zed didn't say they could use the table, but he also didn't say they couldn't. He asks the Cadet if he wants to use the table with him. After he does that at 3:29 the Cadets emotions switch and shows fear/uncertainity. In the Cadets mind, Jay is breaking the rules and going against authority because Zed never told them they could use the table. The Cadet is really great and makes this scene. The difference in his emotions looking at J from 1:30 to 3:29 demonstrates how J is different.

Thing is, MIB doesn't operate as a military, the closest analogy to what they do is no different to that of a police officer except on a semi-larger scale of importance. MIB are basically a combination of boarder patrol, detectives, and beat cops just as a means of helping or isolating the extra-terrestrial communities. K had the right idea for picking out J for this line of work since he already had prior career and life experience necessary as an NYPD beat cop who needs to get a feel for the situation around him by asking questions. Jarheads like the other candidates only know how to follow orders on a "Shoot First, Ask Questions Later" mentality, and are most-likely to start an international incident by sheer accident.

It was simple, logical, and showed exactly what kind of person he was. This is exactly how you introduce a good character.

Jay is the only one who questions why they're there, only one with the common sense to use the table, only one who doesn't shoot the aliens on sight, the only one to notice how out of place Little Tiffany was, and the only one who could make up an MIB style excuse on the spot.

K never laughs. In the animated series, J realised that K had been replaced with an imposter when the imposter laughs.

@@soulsemblance3163 yeah. Apparently it is retcon, not the original conceived storyline but it fits well, if not perfectly. MIB3 was the best in the trilogy.
