Elle représente pourtant une part importante de sa production, et il semble y avoir apporté une attention particulière. Juif converti tout enfant par une décision de son père, il a toujours pris très au sérieux le fait religieux, qu'il n'associe pas forcément à une église particulière. Tout jeune, bien avant son voyage italien, il a composé un ‘’Tu es Petrus’’ très romain. Il a bien entendu travaillé pour l'office luthérien. Ses compositions pour l'église anglicane sont encore aujourd'hui au répertoire des cathédrales d'Angleterre ; son hymne Hear my prayer est un parfait modèle de l’esthétique spirituelle victorienne et a suscité bien des imitations. Une lettre du 15 juillet 1831 nous fait apercevoir une explication: "Si j'ai écrit plusieurs morceaux de musique religieuse, c'est que c'était un besoin pour moi, de même qu'on a parfois besoin de lire un certain livre, la Bible, par exemple, ou tout autre, et que ce livre-là seul vous satisfait." Derrière la pudeur naturelle d'un jeune homme très bien élevé, ne faut-il pas voir ici la marque d'un désir de concilier dans un même mouvement une appartenance profonde au monde de la Bible et le goût de la prière musicale telle qu'il l'a rencontrée dans les œuvres de Jean-Sébastien Bach, à la redécouverte duquel il a pris, tout jeune encore, une part glorieuse, et de GeorgeFrédéric Haendel, dont il admirera sans retenue les oratorios. Les deux grandes compositions de la maturité, Elijah et Paulus, qu'aurait dû venir compléter un Christus resté inachevé, constituent ainsi un pont entre les deux traditions où le jeune Mendelssohn puise ses convictions spirituelles. Le psautier trouve naturellement sa place dans une œuvre aussi fortement ancrée dans la Bible. Le Psaume 115 fut la première des grandes adaptations de psaumes de Mendelssohn à être publiée et, comme il le racontait à sa soeur, il fut achevé à Rome en 1830 : « Chère Fanny, le cadeau que j’ai préparé pour ton anniversaire cette année est un psaume pour choeur et orchestre, ’Non nabis, Domine’. Tu connais déjà le début. Il y a un air qui a une belle conclusion, et le choeur final te plaira, j’espère. » On remarque clairement l’influence de Bach dans le choeur d’ouverture, non seulement dans le tissu polyphonique de l’écriture chorale, mais aussi dans le traitement orchestral. Après un prélude orchestral de douze mesures, ténor et basse se lancent à l’unisson dans le premier verset, qui est alors développé en polyphonie par tout le choeur. On retrouve cette structure dans les mouvements d’ouvertures de tous les psaumes de Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn avait une excellente opinion du Psaume 42, comme on peut le constater dans ses lettre : « le meilleur morceau de ce genre que j’ai écrit » (5 août 1837). « Car aucune de mes oeuvres ne me rend plus furieux quand je l’entends mal jouer, et il n’y en a aucune qui demande à être jouée avec plus de délicatesse » (1er janvier 1839). Le psaume 98 est une pièce glorieuse qui témoigne de plus de savoir-faire que d'émotion. L'œuvre est la plus importante que Mendelssohn ait écrite sur un texte latin ; dessinée en traits larges, fortement orchestrée, elle fait penser au Beethoven de la Messe en ut. Le psaume 114 chante la joie d'Israël échappant à sa captivité égyptienne. C'est l'une des plus complètes réussites du musicien ; la vigueur répétée du mouvement qui anime la première section lui donne une dimension et une ampleur où se retrouve le souvenir des grandes invocations haendéliennes. La reprise du thème à la fin du psaume conduit à un climat d'exultation lumineuse d'une rare intensité. C’est en 1847, que Mendelssohn (1809-1847) se décida à écrire un troisième oratorio Christus, qui devait avec Paulus (op. 36) et Elias (op. 70) constituer un triptyque. Il était alors extrêmement fatigué et il ne put d'ailleurs achever cette œuvre. A travers ces trois oratorios, Mendelssohn imaginait réaliser ainsi une synthèse de l'Ancien (Elias) et du Nouveau Testament (Paulus). Mais ce triptyque symbolisait en même temps l'histoire de sa propre famille : son grand-père Moses incarnait l'Ancien Testament et le judaïsme tandis que son père Abraham, qui s'était converti au protestantisme, était proche du juif de la Diaspora Saul qui devint Paul le chrétien répandant chez les Gentils la foi nouvelle. Le texte de cet oratorio, qui provient de l'Ecriture Sainte, fut écrit par Christian von Bunsen. L'oratorio était construit en trois parties : la naissance du Christ, la passion du Christ, la résurrection du Christ. C'est cette dernière partie qui ne fut jamais composée. La première section s'organise comme suit : récitatif de soprano narrant la naissance du Christ, trio vocal des Trois Mages et pour finir un chœur à quatre voix qui raconte la prophétie et qui s'enchaîne au choral luthérien "Wie schôn leuchtet der Morgenstern" où entre chaque section l'on retrouve le même motif qu'au début de cette partie. La seconde partie débute, elle aussi, par un récitatif qui s'enchaîne à une section polyphonique à quatre parties qui représente la foule. L'écriture en est extrêmement dramatique avec des imitations ou des répétitions sur le mot "Kreuzige ihn". Cet épisode dramatique est interrompu par un passage plus descriptif, notamment avec les interventions de Ponce Pilate. Comme la première partie, la seconde se termine avec la mélodie de choral "O Welt, ich muss dich lassen" dont l'harmonisation, cette fois-ci, est beaucoup plus romantique. Years ago I was a member of a symphonic choir. Mendelssohn was always a favourite, 'gentle' on the voice & ear with beautiful results for performers and audiences alike. Those nostalgic harmonies still bring me close to emotionally filled tears every time I hear it. Thanks for this glorious upload.

My first encounter to Mendelssohn's music was his Paulus oratorio - which I bought for need of spiritual refreshing and research - in same day I bought a Brazilian book about saint Paul. His bound of Bach and Handel baroque sacred music with romantism is unbelievable great. So many times I cry with one of last his Paulus cavatina. Cheers from São Paulo, Brazil.
