The independent repair community gets a lot of criticism to the tune of "only Apple is 'qualified' to repair Apple products." This creates the impression that when you choose to pursue any kind of warranty replacement at Apple that the refurbished device you are getting is superior to what you might get if you just took your device to be repaired at your local quality independent repair shop.
This might not always be true, and consumers deserve the right to know what they are getting. Here we see an Apple refurbished iPad mini that was sold by Apple despite water damaged components on the board, and no longer conforming to the original design at the power management chip, plus evidence of excess heat on the board.
It failed due to common drop damage that an original board would not be susceptible to because of underfill on the PMIC chip.
We are seeing a lot of touch ic problems in iPhone 6/6+ Apple refurbs in addition to original Apple devices. If a cracked screen phone that has had a drop is returned to Apple for out of warranty replacement, the refurb process does not change the touch ic chip, and therefore the refurb phone is particularly susceptible to touch ic problems since the board has already been subject to drop. We are seeing many examples of people with touch ic problems that take the phone to Apple and pay the $299 out of warranty exchange just to have the same thing happen to their refurb replacement phone.
They could have just had their original phone addressed at independent repair to have a new touch ic soldered on the board robustly, for much less.
If you think that Apple repair is always superior to independent repair---think again.

you all say 'oh thanks I will never buy refurbished again' but if apple lies about their refurbished products , why trust them on their new products?

I used to work for a refurb company in the UK contracted by apple, I witnessed much water damaged iPhone 4 and 4s boards being treated in ultrasonic baths and then baked in infrared ovens, then my departments job was to put some of those crappy boards with an LCD and housing. I was shocked at first but now I know it is commonplace and is completely acceptable in all electronic device industries. I did not work there long felt so uncomfortable.

@@tryitout-701 The idea ia that Apple never does individualized repair like your local unauthorized repair center does. When you bring your defective or damaged phone to the Apple store / an ARC, whether it's covered by warranty or not - they send your device off, and you get _a different,_ "refurbished" phone back. The reason they do this is to save Apple money. That's why the majority of devices overall, get sent to large refurb centers with hundreds to thousands of workers, usually centralized in the cheapest locations in the world for low wages and minimum corporation taxes. The economy of scale makes this arrangemen advantageous for them. The downside is shipping and turnover, for time. So when you have to wait 2 weeks - your actual device wasn't shipped off, repaired and returned. Those two weeks is just the time it took for the device to reach intake inspection and get the go-ahead (the actual full process takes substantially longer). - Apple _could_ give you the refurbished replacement right there in the store, if they wanted. This is one of the big reasons you don't get to keep your data, even if ie. just the screen was broken. Because what you're getting back, is someone elses phone. I don't know if they program refurbs (differently) these days. But earlier one easy way to tell that you got a different device back, was checking the IMEI code vs the one on your original receipt or the box it came in.

You are 100% correct. They don't retain its gluing method after replacing ICs, in the companies. I use to raise this issue in seminars and meetings. I even asked the Nokia to supply the liquid to inject after replacing the chip. They refused, and never bothered . (When I was working for NOKIA). Even implementation of manufacturing faults (which I use to find and report to Managers) took six months in the updated manual or quick update news. That's how the Industry is. By the way your skill and knowledge is very good. I can see myself in that type of repairing (Level 4, the highest in NOKIA). Cheers

In the auto electrics industry, starters alternator are both refurbished and remanufactured. The difference us that "refurbished" just means "fixed what was broke" while remanufactured means it was torn down to the frame, and every part was checked to make sure it met OEM spec in every way before the "new" unit was assembled. The consumer electronics industry only "refurbishes". May even leave a half dead battery in it because, hey, it still works.

I agree with you, electronics is the same weather it is in a phone, a note pad or what have you. I think it is so funny people get the misconception that only the makers of the product can do the work. I worked at Apple in Colorado in the 90's and I can tell you we saw a great many repairs. I was proud to make sure that the product I worked on looked as new as possible. In Fact we were not allowed to put boards in that looked like that. It would have to be totally redone in the board shop downstairs before it could be put back into any unit. Quality should be the first thing on the techs mind when he/she is making the repairs. Thanks for the great video!!

I found the same thing out after my niece broke her screen and they gave her a refurbished phone that kept dying it wouldn't stay charged so she gave it to me after she got a new one! So I figured bad battery or charging dock and when I opened it up all the white stickers was red and it was in a life proof case and still never seen water I tried a battery and charging dock still didn't fix it so I'm assuming it was the u2 chip! I've had many issues with Apple refurbished phones! Good video Jessa!

Sure, but it shouldn't be the case for _one_ Apple refurb. There are clear signs. And we *know* an or multiple actual "factory" refurb tech(s) inspected and worked on this, because diagnosing, setting up and routing/cutting away that chip and that underfill before repair, would involve at minimum two or three visual inspections. By people who do this and only this - inspect, evaluate, and possibly set up the boards for various processing - for a living. And we all know how paranoid Apple is about any sign of moisture.

When I got a replacement 5s a while back on a replacement program for the power button, I had no illusions about it being a refurb, which was ok with me; I'd bought it 2nd hand off eBay with a broken screen and replaced it, along with the dock. Had I known it was eligible for a replacement, I might not have done the dock, but it was good experience. Only recently replaced it with a 2ndhand 6s and still works perfectly. I don't know if anyone is actually saying only Apple can repair your device, I have never heard that claim myself, but clearly it is not true. They are in the best position to be able to fix it, true; but I don't think they want to handle every broken screen or drop damage out there. Having had to fix my niece's dropped phone a few times, I have seen the result of cheap cowboy screen repairs, with missing components, damaged screws, etc. Though if I take my Mac in for repair, I know from their service manual they will do a few checks to isolate if it is a connector or chord first, but if they isolate it to a board, they will simply replace the entire board, not fix it. The board may go away for refurbishment, it would make sense, it would minimise time spent repairing individual machines, while somewhere else they can concentrate on fixing it, if they can be bothered.

apple does this all the time, half the iphone 6 that I replace the screens on that have the original screen are missing the pad covering the lcd connectors and the water damage indicators are missing, I ask my customers where they get them from and nearly all the time they say they got it from the apple store, and some were even told that they were NEW

I love watching you and Louis work, brings me back to high school when I used to be the only individual (and a student, no less) to keep the school's entire Macintosh collection up and running. ('92-'96). I can personally vouch that Apple refurbished parts are not quite up to snuff. We used to get refurbished logic boards with damaged flyback leads and/or cold solder joints on the flyback transformer (typically the Mac Plus/SE/Classic varieties). We even received a board that was so far out of whack that no amount of potentiometer adjustment could bring the 5v and 12v rails anywhere near acceptable levels! Finally I told the head of the computer labs to just let me reflow the flyback joints on the "bad" boards instead of ordering refurbished boards that often needed the exact same reflow - saving the school thousands of dollars, and taking a whole mess of Pluses and SEs waiting for the next budget cycle to order more logic boards and throwing them back into service - I could churn out a dozen or so in one study hall period.

Another possible explanation is that this ipad was repaired by someone for warranty fraud. Chinese consumer law requires the manufacturer to use brand new parts for repair or whole unit replacement, and if whole unit replacement, start over the warranty. So this gives people a chance to extend the warranty forever in theory, or get a new device if you have the skills to disguise damages caused by abuse as malfunctions eligible for warranty. Because you can be sure that Apple will give you a brand new one instead of a refurb unit that might also be a piece of s**t. There is an industry just for faking malfunctions just to make Apple replace the devices for you, not to mention repairing the device to the point that Apple will accept for warranty. There are no LCIs in an ipad, so I guess what might happened was: Someone dropped his/her ipad in the water. He/she brings the device to a pro who does just what I mentioned above. The pro repairs the board to the point that it will boot and connect to a PC (required for Genius Bars in China, otherwise they will ask for proof of purchase and send the device in for very detailed examination, because they have been conned before), then restores everything as much as possible, then bring it to Apple, claiming that there are small defects. Apple accepts and replace the ipad, the original customer and the pro is happy. Apple sends the device back for refurbishment. Because the claimed defect is minor (like dust under the screen, bad home button .etc.) and the pro has done a good job restoring the ipad, Apple didn't bother to take the shield off to check for damage, they just disassemble the ipad and briefly tests the board, then uses the board as refurb parts. The board makes its way to the refurb line and finally ends up on your desk.

Jessa, there is a reason why OEM Apple adhesives are stronger. Most people uses 300LSE. Ist perfect, BUT! Its not thick enough to bond the screen perfectly. You need to put 2/3 layers on it, ESPECIALLY with the iPod Touch 4g and higher. And both surfaces where the adhesives has to stick on has to be cleaned in a way that nothing is in between there. Believe it or not, fingerprints and human body oils hugely decreases the bond between the two surfaces. 99% of electronics repair companies didn't know it but the reason why the adhesive is thicker, is to create a cushion for the glass and way more flexibility and durability, plus the bond is a lot stronger.
@JessaJones

+Lorenzo van het Hul So true on the removal of 100% of old adhesive. I use a 3m sticker remover pen then alcohol to get the frame factory perfect before the new screen. Hands down the best adhesives for iDevice repair are made by Tesa. You can order this from Neils Brooks at tapetemplates.com. This is the webinar that iFixit did on adhesives with the folks from Tesa who shared with us their experience as pressure sensitive adhesive manufacturers on how to use this stuff. i found it even more interesting that the bonding strength is significantly higher when the tape itself is heated up to 40-50°C before applying without damaging it or making it less durable. also that it builds up strength up to 48hours after applying was a good thing to know too. thank you Jessa for the link to the video!
@lorenzovanhethul1355
@lorenzovanhethul1355 8 жыл бұрын
Btw, b4 you apply it, use some cleaning fluid to remove any smudges and then use standard transparent tape to remove any fluid leftovers. Just go over the spots you want to put adhesive on sometimes and trust me, it would make a better bond then any Apple OEM's. And for iPod touch 4 gens, ipod touch 5 gens, use (3 layers) of 300LSE tape and the same technique mentioned above to adhere it down. The OEM tape is thick, exactly 3 times thicker then 300LSE from 3M. So 3 times.

First the kid probably caused the water damage and the water might have caused the short that could have made the capacitor heat up. Also refurbished devices have a one year warranty, just like any other Apple device, so chances are that they probably could have had it fixed for free instead of through you. Speaking from experience, I have bought a refurbished MacBook and it was basically a brand new unit repackaged and I've had zero problems in three years, the fact of the matter is Apple certified refurbished products are at a higher quality level then any other refurbished product through a different source, I guarantee a refurbished from another source would have way more problems.

What she said is so true. When you had a phone fixed at the third party repair store before and when you bring that phone to Apple then their employees will tell you someone broke something in your phone. I know some independent repair stores have no electronic knowledge or background. They broke people's phone sometimes because they have no idea what they are doing. But there are still a lot of independent repair stores have great electronic skill, knowledge and background to do level 3 or 3.5 mother repair level. I also own a independent electronic repair shop. I used to work for a Samsung authorized service and HTC authorized care center with level 3 repair on motherboard for almost 10 years. We authorized to fix almost everything on board level. We know what we are doing. Apple employees please stop saying bad things about independent repair shops because not only you guys know how to repair phones.

I can agree with the title. I bought a refurbished iPad 6th gen from Apple last year. It suddenly stopped working recently. A third-party diagnosed it as a faulty PMU IC. I sent it to Apple and they claim that the item has extensive liquid damage. The iPad has been nowhere near liquid. I can only assume that the water damage existed before I bought the iPad. I escalated this to Apple customer support, who were utterly useless. I will not buy a refurbished product from Apple again.

So, just had a thought. Carriers and Apple buy back your old phone so you could upgrade to the new right? Kinda makes you wonder with the new iPhone SE out how many of those boards were "refurbished". I mean, the boards look identical from looking at iFixit's teardown, minus CPU and other odds and ends. Those are all components that could be replaced at board level repair or "replacement". Just a Hunch...

I'm almost completely sure that Apple didn't actually perform the IC replacement on that board, because for them it makes no sense, they have a huge stockpile of those boards that they make inexpensively but sell them at a super high price to the customers. They would have tossed the board away and put in a new one, because labor hours cost them more than the board. No, that was done at an independent repair shop, where someone had his iPad fixed, and then he did some kind of a trade-in with Apple where he bought a new device, and traded in his old device, which Apple superficially checked, it seemed OK and they repackaged it and put it on the out-of-warranty replacement refurbished pile.
@JessaJones
@JessaJones 8 жыл бұрын
If any independent repair shop can put on a mini PMIC and reseal the iPad so that it is indistinguishable from factory they would get a far better return by just selling it. Why would they take it to Apple? The trade in value would be far less than simply selling it.
@DanijelTurina973
@DanijelTurina973 8 жыл бұрын
iPad Rehab Why do a trade-in with Apple? I don't know; why does anyone? Maybe they wanted a newer model. Maybe they thought the repair was merely a temporary fix and it's better to move the device while it still works. But it's a rational move. From Apple's perspective, if refurbishing a device requires anything more than a memory wipe and some cleaning, it simply isn't worth the effort. That's why they don't do what you and Louis do, and instead they just throw away the old laptop boards and put in new ones, and with phones and tablets not even that much. It would be completely irrational for them to do IC change on a water damaged iPad mini because for them it's a throwaway device that is not worth repairing.
@JessaJones
@JessaJones 8 жыл бұрын
People do what makes sense for them to do. There is no way that Apple is throwing away logic boards with minor water damage. And there is no way that anyone could have put that screen on indistinguishable from factory, and if they did, there is absolutely no way that they would have turned it in to Apple instead of selling it for a better value than you'd get from any kind of trade-in. The refurb was good, and it would have worked indefinitely if it hadn't been dropped.

At the end of the day, people will get what they paid for. You want brand new then pay brand new money. Plus this is like asking did the lack of adhesive kill the device or did the fall that it got and with that, I have to know if the device didn't fall from the child would it still be working normally? I get the point that everyone will make mistakes even the manufacturer also so no one is perfect and outside shops may even sometimes be better at repairs than the manufacturers also.

I bought a macbook pro that I spent a lot of money on. It was under warranty and failed. I brought it to an apple store. They gave it back and said it was contaminated with nicotine and posed a health hazard to their workers so they couldn't repair it. I opened the back and found two small dime sized yellow marks where the fans blew. I asked them if I could have it professionally decontaminated, or if I could just swap the uncontaminated motherboard for a working one. Of course they said no. F* you very much apple, for an overpriced macbook pro and a fake warranty. And get this.... I'm watching this stuff to see if I can repair my next macbook pro that failed on me. Meh, not such an apple fan boy anymore.

at 6:26 Jessa mentions that two caps appear water damaged. What criteria do you use to judge this? I can't tell any difference between the two shown and others that she mentions are fine. What are we looking for exactly that is clear water damage in this example?
@JessaJones
@JessaJones 8 жыл бұрын
normal caps have two shiny soldered ends. water damaged caps have one end dull gray and oxidized---the end "on the line" and the ground end still looks shiny and normal. After you look at about 1000 boards both water damaged and not it is clear as day. Other things can cause oxidation such as flux left on the board, but this will oxidize both sides of the cap.

+worroSfOretsevraH If I'm reinstalling an LCD I wear latex gloves which leave no marks. Most of what I do is board repair, so I usually use tester LCDs and don't worry about it. In general, I don't try to reuse digitizers at all. I don't think the time spent removing the old adhesive and applying new and worrying about fingerprints and dust is worth the cost of just using a new digitizer. I will clean an LCD. I use a small amount a product called "Perfect Glass" on a new microfiber cloth to clean.

This is a well known fact - ask anyone Apple authorized that knows what they're doing and they will confirm it for you. Goes likewise for macbooks/iMacs/etc. Replaced components have a different color plastic (in the case of battery connector, RAM slots, etc) on them on a certain quadrant that went bad.

It's quite hilarious that, I'm in China, using iPad Pro 9.7 China version(each of Apple device have a area code that indicates where this device is intended to be shipped and sell, just for the people that might don't know about this.) recently i bent that iPad Pro and pretty much its turned into a curved display iPad, i was pretty much willing to use that special one at the beginning, but after its started to heating up and battery indicator jumping around, i took it to the Apple Store, they told me that its a smart idea for bring it in since its heating up weirdly. i paid the fee and got a swap one for that, for the name of trust, i did not check it, just pulled in my bag after pay for that, said thanks, and start the way back. (and its functions no prob when i test it after return). The interesting part come, on my digital Genius Bar work confirmation as well as the receipt, its says iPad Pro 128GB somethingsomethingsometing '''(NEW)'''. yup, its directly indicate this one is new, and i looked up, yup, theres also someone's swap device says (RFB), which is def means refurbished. i took up the work confirmation for my phone before for battery still dropping even not using. my swap phone is also a new one, not 'rfb'. at least that what they says on the sheet. And what decide which one ill get? looked up and got the result of according to the Chinese Consumer Law, factory must use a new replacement if they have to swap the device. so i got a new iPad for outta warranty damage replacement( i have to pay of course).and in warranty replacement for my iPhone 6S Plus (free cuz i did not break it). and when someone brings in a device that purchased elsewhere for service, like HK, Taiwan or whatever, consequently its not covered by the Mainland China Consumer Law, but it still an Apple device and Apple serviceable. So they give those 'RFB' devices. After seeing this video i feel so glad that i did not get those refurbished device and that add points to my decision that i never going to buy something refurbished or used unless its free. I'm quite a apple fan boy, even though i don't buy refurbs but i do recommend them to people if somebody want to buy one but having a bit financial struggle, from now on i will not anymore, its disgusted me.

When I see any type of conformal coating, I assume it's there to mitigate the effects of humidity or tin whisker growth. Rework does happen during manufacturing, and will deviate from the normal process. I suspect this may be the original condition of the board. If you open any consumer electronics, you will find lots of substandard work.

I ended up replacing the battery, screen and cover plate myself. 2 months later no problems. I think I'm lucky it wasn't an IC chip issue. If it was I probably wouldn't have been able to fix it myself. I just fixed my wife's phone for her. Apple relies on it's customers feeling helpless so we can throw more money at the problem.

am i correct, that it costs almost nothing for apple or 3rd party repair to put underfill back, where it originally was? and water damage on a board means that it will be way more likely to break in the future correct? also how in the world can a device like the ipad mini get water damage, i look at that device and am like wtf, it's not ip68 or sth? it's not even splash resistant i read?
@JessaJones
@JessaJones 7 жыл бұрын
underfill has its own biology--the substance must be matched to the thermal expansion coefficients of the solder---it's not "just squirt some crap in there and it'll be fine" so no--putting back underfill is beyond the scope of independent repair and apparently beyond the scope of Apple refurbishing as well.

For personal use, sure. Or if you were to replace 100% of the damaged components. In this case, this board is not quite as originally designed but it is close. The problem is the idea that 'Apple wouldn't do that" when clearly they do.

It's a subtle distinction, but the "iPad Rehab" is not saying that Apple should not do this, she is complaining that Apple spreads "FUD" that 3rd party repair shops don't repair products properly, because they do this kind of repair, and only the mighty Apple can do it "properly"... while in fact apple repairs are no different than those 3rd party repairs.

Back in 2014 I bought a refurb 2013 MacBook Air. Never had a single issue loved the laptop, until I decided to clean off the keyboard. All I did was take a wet wipe and clean of the keyboard a bit aggressively but keep In mind I already done the to tons of previous dell Latitudes and insprions. After that my trackpad went out, then the keyboard. I already did this countless other times to my MacBook Air. After that somehow liquid got into my laptop and the shorted it out. After that I paid Apple to repair it and it was a brand new laptop. But then I again not learning my lesson from the first time decided to do it again. Same thing happened but required a new top case. After that I was about done with how fragile that computer is and how I can't even clean off my laptop. So then I decided to by a Surface Book and it has been worlds better than my MacBook Air except battery life. I'm wondering if this same situation would've applied to me?
