Dear Jessa, I came to the comments section only to express my admiration to you. Your explanations are so clear, you're incredibly charmful, completely skillful, and I just love how didáctic and calm you are. Zero arrogance, very mature and an absolutely lovely personality. I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but at least this video of yours contributes against a true sad era of impersonalization through brief and reductionist tutorials about almost anything in KZfaq. I mean, the extension of your videos, your naturalness and your charm gives a very pleasant, human vibe. I felt like it was a personal advice tutorial video, not just a generic, synthetized, step-by-step, impersonalized video. Your style of teaching is unique, or at least, extremely uncommon in KZfaq. My best regards.

Only thing what I do different is that I also desolder shield from flex cable on lcd and clean components underneath. Sometimes that can save you LCD. A lot of time lcd needs backlight change which is not hard to change. Good work.

Speaking from electronics experience, if you measure across a capacitor for continuity or resistance you may get a reading or a short beep depending on how large the capacity of the capacitor is. Your meter is putting out a small voltage DC to the circuit you are measuring and so any capacitors in the device will take a short time to charge up. Most meters will register a continuity beep up to 30-40 ohms so that cap charging up is going to look like a short for enough time in most cases that the meter will see it as a momentary short. One other thing to add to this is many of the more expensive meters use a latching circuit on the continuity tester for the length of one beep so even if your meter only reads under the 30-40 ohms for a micro-second it will audible as a full beep.

I too am an admirer of your skills, candor, and effort for this free info. I'm not an electronics expert. How do we know if it's safe to just remove a capacitor and not replace it? I think that's what you did for this repair or maybe you replaced them and I couldn't see. Thanks for all of this. I just ordered my microscope -- not as fancy as yours. I went to S.U. so I might want to visit again and take your course.

Rice worked for me. My iPhone was soaked in water for about 2-5 minutes in sink. It was iPhone plus with a plastic cover. The phone was dead. I was planning to buy a new one at the moment, but my mother immediately put the phone in rice and told me that she rekindled 3 phones before. Honestly, I did not believe her. Guess what, it took less than 10 minutes before my phone went back on itself. There were some problems: the hole for the ear piece was plugged by rice, the speaker phone did not work, the Bluetooth did not awake. But the WiFi and other functions worked. About 2 hours later in rice, speaker phone worked. Next day morning, the Bluetooth came back. Rice works.

Hi. Thanks for another great informative video. You mentioned that one of the shields was harder to remove, due to a higher melting point solder and I was wondering if it would be any easier if you were to use a board heater on the underside, like you get on BGA repair stations that pre-heat to about 150 Deg C?

Love your videos! I watch them all day while doing my IT work. Recently I ended up hooked on this Apple repair shop guys show and was suprised when I found you co staring as the grandma. Now off to a practical thought. Most people do not have Isopropanol or Isopropyl alcohol at home on the shelf. So here is the question. What do you think of using concentrated windshield wiper fluid as a substitute? As far as I know the only issue might be the coloring agent used in it which does leave a bit of a residue. Personally I use it as a screen cleaner and general cleaning agent around apparatuses.

Hi Jes. Thanks for the time you put into your videos. One quick question (not questioning your knowledge) - when you say if there is a short to ground and you get continuity on both ends of the components that means the phone won't turn on? I've done two water damaged iPhone 6's in the last two weeks both with this short to ground fault and both phones turn on and work perfectly fine?

Thanks for this. Just fixed my fiances iPhone X. She dropped in a gutter and it was boot looping. Turned it off. Shook as much water out as I could out the sim card slot. Was going to drop it in a container with dessicant, but saw this. Next morning I picked up a kit from iFixit and opened it up with a hair dryer. Was a bit nervous I'd break something, but everything looked good cept a few potential mineral deposits on MB. Pulled it and soaked in 99.9% alcohol, let it dry.. and like it never happened... Wishing I didn't have to reopen it to replace the seal in 2 days once it comes in the mail, but I think I'll be fine.

Yeah my phone was in a broken lifeproof case underwater for approximately 10 minutes. First thing I did was hit the home button. Phone heated up, probably short circuiting. Dried it when I got home and put it in a container full of silica gel. Set up an appointment at the Apple Store for Sunday. I guess I'll see if it turns on tomorrow or if I'm going to have to get it repaired. Funny thing is that the exact same thing happened to me 2 years ago. Had to buy the early upgrade last time. This time though, I want to get the phone before I go on vacation and am willing to buy a replacement if necessary.

One thing I learned in college was when you use a meter to test a component while it's still in circuit you're testing all components around it in the schematic. You could have a resistor and a capacitor parallel in a circuit. If you test the capacitor it's going to show resistance.

yea problem is opening it up means voiding warranty.. id rather put it in rice and dont turn it on until ive let it with rice for the weekend.. it can prevent water that would eventually damage the board
@JessaJones
@JessaJones 6 жыл бұрын
Opening your phone does not void the warranty, however water damage does void the warranty. If you immediately open a wet phone and disconnect the battery, and dry the phone you can save more phones than if you do nothing (by putting it in rice or anything else). Doing nothing can work sometimes if you're lucky, but often it just allows water droplets to roll across waterproofed surfaces inside the phone and drop down on the logic board causing a short circuit and kills what would have been a repairable phone. It also allows the full battery voltage to expend into logic boards that instantly got a short circuit when water hit the board---essentially electroplating the entire main power line. The takes what was fixable focal damage and turns it into widespread unfixable damage. Rice is ALWAYS a bad idea.

Some of us don't have enough money to let a professional. :-( Instant rice does dry things out. And my phone is a non removable cover, so what do you suggest about that???

Incredible video Jessa. I've worked at Fluke for years and have worked as a technician so I really respect what you are doing here. Honestly a lot of companies got out of board test because of the extreme miniaturization you're dealing with. We had digital testers that probed legs along the IC, we had probes that even probed those original Motorola and Intel CPUs. I'm just fascinated by your videos......being that I'm coming from the test world where we basically threw in the towel on trying to fix devices like you're fixing! By the way, I'll say it again thank you for standing up to Apple. It really infuriates me they ban you from their forums for trying to help their customers. What ever happened to common decency? Ooooooh, it boils the blood.

Hello, in the case of the heavily corroded phone, can the photos still be recovered?

You never know. We have recovered phones that spent 4 months at the bottom of the ocean, and also failed to recover board that spent a few minutes in light rain. It all depends.

A trick : you can watch series on InstaFlixxer. I've been using it for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.

Why not immediately rinse in alcohol, once you have the phone apart?

Okay never mind, I understand now that it's electricity causing the corrosion, and residue left by water will be cleaned off later.

I remember leaving my Game Boy on the swing and the rain came... I dried it on the heater. Game boy works to this day after that but I know it's probably due to bigger components(corrosion has to be much bigger to make critical damage). I will take it apart and see if I can find any marks of water damage. Just for fun.

How do you explain alot of people saying the rice method works? Did the phone's just dry out naturally?

is ti okay to let it sit in 100% alcohol after dropping it in water then dissemble or send it to repair shop while sitting in alcohol. What kind of soldering iron is that at 29:30

That's why I have a S7 edge. If you take a small swim of the phone gets wet you just wipe the water from it. I am afraid what will happen when I have to replace the battery when the phone will no longer be properly sealed from water ingress.

I'm not sure if this question has a very easy answer, but i'm asking anyway: Is there a reason why alle the components aren't completly covered in underfill other than apple being apple and wanting you to buy a new phone from time to time? I guess it could create heat related problems? Maybe it would make water unrelated repair nearly impossible?
@JessaJones

underfill has its own biology. it isn't something that you can just dump on a phone---thermal expansion in relationship to the solder ball thermal expansion, heat dissipation for example.
