Your videos are such a blessing to so many strangers. But just think of what a blessing it will be to have these videos for your children and grandchildren one day (a LOOOONG time from now) when you're not around. I would love to have videos with instructions from my MawMaw on how she cooked things. ❤

My kids and grands have fond memories of helping in the kitchen and gives them so much confidence! I love your less edited style Ruth Ann! 🏆

Haha, why make one pie when you can make three?! Love it. So interesting! My mom was not a pie-maker. My Gram never shared her baking secrets. And nobody in the family ever made Shoo-Fly Pie. I never even heard about it until I was much older and out of the house. It has always been a big mystery to me ~ not just the pie, but also how it got its name. Anyway, the kids are great helpers! Thanks so much for sharing your approach. These pies look really tasty. 😋

Thanks for the fun! The reason pie dough should not be worked too much is because wheat flour creates gluten. The more it is worked, the more gluten strands are created and the "tougher" the dough becomes. So, for delicate, flaky pie dough, ingredients should be worked as little as possible so gluten formation is as little as possible. Also, if ingredients are cold cold cold, the water creates steam and puffs up the fat-infused dough. Cold and gentle are the keys!

I love Shoo-Fly pie. My grandmother made them all the time, she only used the molasses, not Karo. She was Pennsylvania Dutch and loved the Chow Chow. Still looking for a good recipe for Chow Chow. My grandmother always used two forks to make the crust. My grandmother said the same never overwork the dough. My grandmother made it is smaller batches. My grandmother has been gone since 1968 and I sure miss her even now. She made great apple butter also. She made Blood sausage and head cheese sausage, but would not eat it.

What I would have given to have that hand pie gadget when I was younger! My mom and I used to make fried apple hand pies to sell for our church every year. Mom always just used a saucer for the round template and a fork to close them. Worked great but the uniformity wasn’t there. Made my share of Shoo-Fly pies too! We always used molasses that weren’t black strap. Used to buy it locally. I loved the stuff! Mix it with butter and eat with a hot biscuit…..it was heavenly!

we make ours wet bottom also. Shoefly is a must as a Pennsylvania Dutch girl. My grandma would make 6 pies at a time in her kitchen that was the size of a bathroom these days. The amount of delicious food she made just amazes me to this day. Thanks for sharing your family's recipe. I always use my hands to make pie crust. Don't use a pastry cutter. Any recipes I got from my grandma would just be the ingredients. Not really amounts. I had to experiment to get them right. When I make pie crust I always bake some sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. My son would eat a large amount just by itself as his dessert.

I was taught by an older lady from Kentucky to use two butter knives. Just "cut in" the butter or whatever by making slicing X's with the knives. I do that and/or use my hands. Works like a charm.
