The Maiar of Middle-earth were lesser beings of the Ainur, but still quite powerful in their own right. From this group, we have beings such as Sauron, Saruman, Melian, and Gandalf, as well as many others besides. In this video, we take a look at this group of characters and its members to see how they interact within Arda and Tolkien’s works as a whole. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about the Maiar in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

I've probably mentioned it before, but Arien the maiden of the Sun, was also of the same type of Maia as the Balrogs--a Spirit of Fire. Whose eyes were too bright for anyone to look into. But she remained pure and uncorrupted.

It seems like there are different kinds of fire in Tolkien's world. Fire that destroys and scorches the world, and fire that lights and instills rebirth and creation itself. Arien may have been somewhat conceived of the Secret fire itself through which only Eru Iluvatar can openly use to bring life into the Universe.

When did Galadriel took on Sauron? I hope you don‘t consider the scene from the Hobbit trilogy as canon 🤔 From what we know from the book, that was an team effort by the White Council... which is consisting of more powerful beings then the 4 shown in the movie... and additionally, they had all 3 Elven Rings with them which as I think was the largest factor in throwing out the ‚Necromancer‘

Men of the West Lumequentale, meaning “History” is one of the 2 Maiars that serve Tulkas, the Champion of the Valar and the savior of the protein. He currently takes the form of a man named Yoystan and documents the history of Arda. The other Maia that served Tulkas is named Polda, meaning “Strong” who also takes the form of a man named Royen and helps Lumequentale document the history of Arda. They are currently the only known Maiar to be in Arda at the moment. Their intentions are unknown However Theories suggest that they maybe here to warn us of Dagor Dagorath or they are maybe here simply to inform us about the ages of the world that we have long since forgotten.

In most myths known to me at the time and as it is generally viewed the Sun is masculine while the Moon is feminine. In Tolkien's Silmarillion it was the first time that I ran across the oposite case, Sun as feminine and the Moon as masculine and only later did I learn that in the more ancient mythologies it is like that as well. The earliest peoples represented their Sun as a goddess and that was their central deity. The more I learn the more I'm fascinated by how much Tolkien must have known and how much he must have been learned in mythologies of the whole world. Historically, to have your Sun represented by a female deity meant that the people are more agriculturally oriented and peaceful, and very spiritual about Earth and nature, which corresponds with the views of Elves generally and as the first of the Illuvatar's beings on Arda.💚
@sophiejones3554
@sophiejones3554 2 жыл бұрын
Well I think Tolkien probably did it because in German the Sun is a feminine noun (die Sonne) and the Moon (der Mond) is a masculine noun. Whereas in the Latin languages it’s the opposite: and we get many of our popular ideas about such things from the Normans. But basically to a German, there’s nothing strange about this arrangement. Tolkien was very heavily inspired by Norse and Germanic mythology. But you’re sort of correct in that that’s possibly a holdover from very ancient myths wherein the Sun was a goddess. However, at the time that Tolkien was writing much of the research into those societies had not been done yet. Also, do keep in mind that ancient peoples were not a monolith. “the earliest peoples” had no single opinion on religion: how they conceived of the Sun and Moon would have depended a lot on where they lived. Many of the archaeological finds you speak of come from Germany, Poland etc Northern countries with temperate climates where the feminine Sun and masculine Moon makes quite a bit of sense. Hence the Sun goddess and Moon god. But the idea of a masculine Sun and feminine Moon is not any newer: it merely comes from a different place, namely the Mediterranean basin. It’s pretty obvious why an Italian would think of the Sun as a guy and the Moon as a girl. One is not earlier, these two interpretations merely come from different places.

Actually, how could they have denied its importance, it took them hunter gatherers to societal living. The importance of language had to have been passed down from gen to gen, religion to religion

@@TheDeluche True but it was Eru Iluvatar himself that gave the Dwarves life after he saw Aule had genuine repentance for being impatient and doing what he did. I don't think Aule is "evil", I just think he acts almost childlike and impulsive at times.
@siryoda8145
@siryoda8145 2 жыл бұрын
@@waynepurcell6058 I wouldn’t call it being impulsive- but there is something to your point, I think. In some of his incomplete works and one of his letters, Tolkien refers to this. If you think of the evil that is done across the ages, students of Aule and Melkor come to mind. With Aule, you could lump in Sauron, Saruman, Feanor, many of the Nolder, many of the dwarves . . . Even with regards to Melkor, it seems Tolkien focuses in on something to do with the . . . powers of invention and creativity driving spirts to folly . . . or worse, evil. Tolkien explicitly rejected metaphors for his work, but one cannot be ignorant of the times he lived through. Progress and change (and the agents of such) were not always “good” in the 20th century. Whereas spirits who were more or less content and at peace with themselves-think of Manwe and the Vanyar as examples-could be and were extremely powerful, but not nearly as “creative” did not fall prey to evil.

When Morgoth was captured at the end of the war of wrath "his feet we hewn from under him and he was bound in the chain Angainor". It would be Eonwe cut his feet off Tulkas subdued him and Olwe bound him. So yes I belive some of the Valar would have been directly involved but not Manwe he would have to stay "above the fray". Keep up the great work it both indicates and initiates great thought. Its what we need more of these day more thought before we act or speak.
@AlphaZaku
@AlphaZaku 4 жыл бұрын
But notice the quote you provided doesnt actually state any names of who did those acts. You're presuming Tulkas did it when theres no other indication that he was present. Eönwë later keeps the Silmarils in order to return them to Aman. He also states that Maedhros and Maglor have to return to Aman to be judged by the Valar, because he cannot release the Silmarils to them without the Valar's consent. If any of the Valar were present, all of this becomes moot, because they would be able to take the Silmarils there and then, and judge Maedhros and Maglor there and then too. Or in the least have this interaction with them personally instead of Eönwë. The fighting was over. Eönwë, whose expertise was warfare, need no longer be in charge, unless hes the highest statured Aniu there, meaning no Valar.
@andrewpulda7969
@andrewpulda7969 4 жыл бұрын
Of coarse I'm assuming the presents of these Valar because who else would be strong/powerful enough to accomplish these feats? Fingolfin as mighty as he was could only wound Morgoth. It would take beings of great power to lop his feet off and subdue him and wield Angainor. You have to read between the lines with much of the Sillmarlion as it encompasses eons of time and exact details couldn't be fleshed out. Remember there were only 2 people who worked on this huge work. So in my mind yes at least a few of the Valar could/would have been involved Tulkas as defacto God of war and Alwe is to wield his creation Angainor.
@AlphaZaku
@AlphaZaku 4 жыл бұрын
@@andrewpulda7969 You're taking Morgoth to be as powerful as he was when he fought Fingolfin. He wasn't. Morgoth drastically reduces his own personal might by dispersing his power throughout Arda. He goes from being unassailable by all the Valar combined to being lesser than Manwë at the Siege of Utumno when he's first chained. He's lesser still when Fingolfin later battles him 1 on 1 and permenantly wounds him. He continues to decline through to the end of the War of Wrath, where Tolkien describes Sauron in the SA to be greater than Morgoth at this time in the the FA. Sauron of course was slain in mortal combat by Gil-galad and Elendil. It absolutely wouldn't require the Valar to assail Morgoth and bind him.

Not me. Those movies are trash, but are much better than the Hobbit Films! At least lotr has much, much more practical effects, and the special effects are better. But, the story went nowhere and there was also no character development, which are both equally important. There was way too much action and plot holes. Peter Jackson and Co. and a big chunk of Hollywood are Anti-History and Ant-Religion. But, there are scenes in movies that are good, some of the casting was amazing, and all of Howard Shore's music is the best part. He should have composed more Anglo-Saxon music to Moria, Rohan and Gondor, though. If Peter Jackson and Co. allowed Tom Shippey, Christopher Lee to Direct/Write and Produce them, and have Christopher Tolkien talk with Jackson, then it would be an amazing TV show, or else, it is unfilmable. I always thought that there were lower forms of Maiar that dwelt in Middle Earth, the ones that became the giants, eagles, the beornings, and great horses. I think this explains the nature of the obscure creatures corrupted by Sauron & Melkor; the watcher of the water, dragons, ungoliant, etc

I extend my best wishes to you, all of your kin and everyone who reads this in these uncertain, and for many, difficult and heartbreaking times. Reality is as harsh as it can get for many of us, i myself am going thru dark times, but if i can escape this heavy weight of burden on my heart by watching this video and once again walk middle earth, it brightens my soul. Shadowofchaos 89 Tolkien did leave a lot of things open ended or he didn’t go much into certain character backgrounds like Legolas for example or what happened to the sons of Elrond after their father sailed did they too take up with the first born or did they follow in Arwen’s footsteps and stay behind in Middle Earth.

Fantastic spotlight on these little known beings of Eru. I want to also applaud you for your fantastic work enunciating so many of these names many do not know how to, it definitely helps the ears of those that would wish to do so. :) Quick note: Nienna is a confusing one because of some inconsistencies but general consensus would dictate that Tolkien would say it like "nee-eh-nah" or with IPA standards [ˈɲenːa] the i would be short so no i sound as in the older English word "nigh" or high. Hope that helps and thanks as always for your wonderful videos.

I don't believe that the Valar participated directly in the War of Wrath: 1. Eonwe is in charge. It does not seem that there are any of the Valar to outrank him. 2. The War of Wrath took a long time. If even Tulkas was involved, he would have bounded across Beleriand Hulk style, tossing orcs and trolls in his wake like a NFL running back versus a defense made of Pop Warner kids. Balrogs might be an inconvenience, but their bodies have necks and backs that can break eventually. As for Morgoth, he has only grown weaker since the last time he and Tulkas tangled. Tulkas has been dancing, drinking, and doing it with Nessa, the Vala of Good Times, instead of exploring the breaking point of Eru's patience by breeding mockeries of his Children like Morgoth. The fight between Morgoth and Tulkas in the War of Wrath would be one sided, and short. On the other hand, I wonder if Tharbad or perhaps Ost-in-Edhil would have been beachfront property if the whole Valar gang teamed up against Morgoth as they had in the past. 3. No judgement occurred on Middle Earth. The mercy for the Elves was heralded by Eonwe, but that decision had been made prior to the War. Instead, the pardon that Eonwe offers the elves is on behalf of the Valar and would not pass judgement on Sauron, but instead commanded him to seek pardon at the feet of Manwe, his lord. 4. The Valar were involved indirectly. Most notably, the Great Eagles of Manwe fought with the Host against the winged fire drakes near the end of the War of Wrath. 5. Nobody (lookin' at you Maedhros and Maglor) is going to steal a Silmaril or two from the Valar. Nope.

@beatleblev
@beatleblev 4 жыл бұрын
@@_semih_ We are not told what cause Beleriand to sink beneath the the sea. We are only told, "For so great was the fury of those adversaries (The Host of Valinor vs. The Host of Morgoth) that the northern reaches of the western world were rent asunder, and the sea churned in through many chasms, and there was confusion and great noise; and rivers perished or found new paths, and the valleys were upheaved and the hills were trod down; and Sirion (where 40 of the 50 years of fighting was spent) was no more." (Silmarillion, p. 312) Eonwe bids Sauron, Maedhros, and Maglor to return to Valinor to face the judgement of the Valar, so it seems that they were not on hand to pronounce judgement. There were plenty of the Maiar in the Host of Valinor to do continent rending damage over 50 years of war. I think there were earlier versions where Tulkas was involved and led the Sons of the Valar, who later became the Maiar. By the end of the First Age, Morgoth had expended so much of himself in the Marring of Arda and in the creation of his servants that his power had eroded to the level that he could be wounded by one of the Children of Eru (Fingolfin) and those wounds could not be healed. This could never happen to Melkor before the First Age began. However, by its end, he had squandered so much of his innate power that he was defeated by the Herald of Manwe, Eonwe.

@@beatleblev You are on fire. Who wins a fight out of Eonwe and Tulkas? It is said Eonwe is the most "skilled" combat artist in Arda, so does that mean he is literally the best fighter, would he beat Tulkas in a fight?
@beatleblev
@beatleblev 3 жыл бұрын
@@alantaylor6691 I'm not sure a Maia could beat a Vala in any contest as the power levels are on different scales. But, Eonwe is one of the most powerful Maiar and Tulkas' sphere of influence on Arda is fairly narrow, being the patron of ass kicking and having good times, so maybe? For argument sake I might agree that in a contest of armed combat Eonwe would win as Tulkas fights unarmed and sees no use for weapons. That's probably because Tulkas does not need them. He IS a weapon. It is more probable that Tulkas would simply snatch Eonwe's weapon and beat him into submission. I do think that Eonwe is probably the better tactician and leader. But, to borrow from another genre, this is Marvel's Hercules vs. Captain America. Tulkas put a beatdown on Melkor and drug him bound hand and foot to judgement in Valinor by himself. Eonwe leads the Army of the Valar to do much the same thing to Morgoth at the end of the First Age. However, by the time Feanor renames Morgoth, he is much weaker than he was as Melkor. Much of his innate power has been spent infusing his Dark Spirit into the marring of Arda and twisting the Children of Eru and the beasts of Yavanna into his hideous slaves.

There is actually on passage in The Silmarillion that would suggest the Valar did not directly participate in the War of Wrath: “And it is said indeed that, even as the Valar made war upon Melkor for the sake of the Quendi, so now for that time they forbore for the sake of the Hildor, the Aftercomers, the younger Children of Ilúvatar. For so grievous had been the hurts of Middle-earth in the war upon Utumno that the Valar feared lest even worse should now befall; whereas the Hildor should be mortal, and weaker than the Quendi to withstand fear and tumult.” (Of the Sun and Moon and the Hiding of Valinor). Here, their reasons for not coming themselves was the result of what had happened during their first wars with Morgoth. In the prior wars, mountains were literally flattened and entire land masses were reshaped. The Valar knew that Men wouldn’t be able to withstand such battle, given they were mortal and weaker as compared to the Elves. They knew very well that further intervention would be a lot worse. Think of it as, they didn’t want Men to become collateral damage because that alone would go against the Will of Eru. Essentially, the Valar weren’t indifferent by not intervening directly during and prior to the War of Wrath. They did help, but in a way that wouldn’t destroy everything and one that gives Elves and Men the power to set their own course.

Another great video thanks...particularly now. Its a pleasure to have someone who is so knowledgeable and passionate about the mythology go through some of my favourite stories. In answer to your question about the Valar in the War of Wrath - I dont think they were present. In the battle of the powers they personally overthrew Melkor and this is explicit in the text. But Tolkien is very clear that he 'spent his spirit' and dispersed his power throughout the Earth as Morgoth, becoming trapped in his form and capable of sustaining injuries. He no longer had the spirit to challenge the Valar, which is why Manwe sent his herald, rather than going himself. Or that's my interpretation anyway...
