I think it's important also to point out that in the movie and book we learn that Bilbo does what no one else could do including Frodo by leaving the ring behind. reminding us “Even the smallest person can change the course of the future” and gandalf finding bilbo wasnt just by chance

Also take into account, though, that Sam didn't take possession of the One Ring out of greed or a lust for power (not to mention that he's a Hobbit, making his receptiveness to the ring's calling greatly reduced), which greatly reduces the ring's influence on its possessor. But I do agree that being able to give it up regardless is a mighty accomplishment.

I like this topic also :) Its q. good material for interesting fanfiction. But for any movie adaptation it could be too complicated and slowing down the pace of the movie too much - at any rate this family feud is not too much about the Ring it had nothing to do with it and the Ring topic was the most important topic of the filmmakers. But showing the characteristics of Sackvilles at least two or three times in the 6 movies (LOTR+H1-3) was important as a part of characterisation of the Shire ppl who are not only nice ones :)

An important point left out of the movies is that Bilbo’s 111th birthday was the same day as Frodo’s 33rd, which is a coming of age milestone for hobbits. He inherited the burden of the ring as soon as he was old enough.

His rangers were great but there were too few of them to win the siege of the city. The "Grey Company" from the book who came south in the search of Aragorn's wherabouts was not more than 30 men. So it was enough to keep some ruffians from the borders of the Shire but not enough to free Minas Tirith. And if the movie showed them as grand army going to help Aragorn win his city back - well, this would be additional complication :) becouse where the Rangers should be during the Elrond's council and during the first stage of Fellowship's journey? If the movie shown that Aragorn got such great army at his disposal - so why didnt he use them earlier? This would be another complication as the small group of the Rangers should stayed at the Shire's borders as Gandalf asked them to, but if they were some big army of Rangers they should be going south to help Rohan and Gondor. But if they went south the Shire was without protection. So the ruffians invaded the Shire :) and we have the situation in which the movie should show now the occupation of the Shire :) which means the addition of about 30 minutes in the ROTK film :) So yes, I think that the green dead army was the optimal version to resolve the siege of the city and make the Shire protected by Aragorn's Rangers :)

@@TallisKeeton The truth is, the ghosts and the Three Hunters become evil when they kill ALL of the orcs! This is a good example of how Jackson does not understand what the good guys should and should not do in war. He does not understand any of the Battles that occurred in History! The ghost scenes, (including when they attack one of the ships), creates a huge plot hole because they can go to Mordor and murder all of the Orcs, too! This plot hole is just as big as the one in Hobbiton when the Hobbits first see one of the Black Riders, when Frodo almost gets captured by him at Buckleberry Ferry, at Bree when Sauron sees Frodo, the Weathertop scene, when the Witch-King could have captured Frodo when Arwen was with him, the Mirror of Galadriel scene, the Osgiliath scene in the Two Towers, the Minas Morgul scene when the Witch-King does not try to search for Frodo, etc! Merry and Pippin are retarded for most of the films! Saruman's and Sam's characters are mostly different. For some idiotic reason, Elrond forgets that Beren, Hurin, Turin, and more men in the past were all courageous, and the Elf-lord of Rivendell hates Aragorn so much that him and Arwen exile Aragorn after she almost decapitates him, (exile is a far-left term). Also, there are many more plot holes with most of Frodo's character in all of the films because, at the very end of the book, he has grown so much that he tells all of the Hobbits to not slay Saruman! He sucks at fighting back against his enemies! He drops his sword when he sees the ring-wraiths, and does not fight back against them at the ford. This destroys his character because he is too weak to be the ring-bearer! The end of the Council of Elrond is extremely convenient because the audience knows that Frodo will take the ring! He also does not stab the cave troll either, punches Boromir to the ground, is very easy with Gollum, tells Sam to go home, beats up Gollum like Sam and Faramir, and KILLS Gollum! There is little to no character development! And, there are a lot more plot holes than I can count that I will not type down, because it will take a very long time: Somehow, the Shire will always be safe because Gandalf and Elrond do not warn the Hobbits of its danger. The whole point of the lotr book is so that they can help save it in the end because they have been through much, much more than in the movies!! So it does not matter if it was not mentioned, and if it is in the film or not! Somehow, the Witch-King can break Gandalf's staff while Eowyn and Merry can defeat him when there is no Tom Bombadil, Gandalf forces Frodo, Theoden, and Denethor, Eru Illuvatar is evil when he forces the Orcs down in the giant, moving pit, etc.

@@saberhamlinconmaverickknud4821 He does not understand any of the Battles that occurred in History! you think that sparing lifes of the enemy was popular in historic battles? :D The ghost scenes, (including when they attack one of the ships), creates a huge plot hole because they can go to Mordor and murder all of the Orcs, too! no, they cant :) they were used only once and only for the protection of the city, not for the conquest of Mordor. though Gimli would have liked it :) and the esense of their use - in the book AND in the movie - was the same - to give them the chance of redeeming themselves and freed them. Such was Aragorns order - he freed them, as he should. Thats one of very rare movie scenes with exact book spiritual idea. :) And about ghosts conquering Mordor - I dont think that would be wise idea - they were not nice ghosts so they could seen Mordor as returning home :) Bree when Sauron sees Frodo Sauron see Frodo and what? :) Sauron is not in Bree, so what he can do? but the nazguls were riding in Bree. This plot hole is just as big as the one in Hobbiton when the Hobbits first see one of the Black Riders what exactly is this plothole? I dont understand. You mean the scene with the treeroots? When they are hiding under the treeroots? Where is this plothole there? they could see the nazgul, but nazgul couldnt see them. becouse nazguls havent got very good eyesight, they mostly smell the blood of other creatures to find them. although the thing with the blood was in the book, they dont mention it in the movie. if they mentioned it in the movie it would be big plothole becouse smelling the blood should be better to find a person in night than eyesight esp in such short distance as the hobbits under the tree were from the nazgul :)

@@saberhamlinconmaverickknud4821 when the Witch-King could have captured Frodo when Arwen was with him why? She got elven horse, very fast elven steed. the black horses were no match for asphaloth - it was exactly as it was in the book. the Mirror of Galadriel scene what about it? :) the Minas Morgul scene when the Witch-King does not try to search for Frodo, yes, in the book if I remember corectly the witch king riding from the gate of minas morgul stopped and it was kind of moment like from Star Wars with jedi - kind of "I feel smt" moment :) but he just went after his army and such :) this ommision didnt made any problem for the logic of the films. and the hobbits were at such distance from the gates that it was possible that the nazgul didnt feel anything, from the proximity of the ring. and the thing is that they focused upon the riding to battle and Sauron never recognised the possibility that anyone could be bringing the ring into Mordor to destroy it. Most of the time the hobbits were seen by Sauron and Co as only the guys who deliver the ring to some of the leaders of men, and when Sauron was informed about some captives they all thought that the captives were just spies. The Mouth of Sauron told the fellowship about a spy, not about a ringbearer. So the forces of Mordor could not know and could not comprehend the idea that someone doesnt want to have the ring and doesnt want to use it, and that someome would want to destroy it. So Sauron and Co for most of the time never knew that the Ring is going into Mordor. :) Why you should check for smt which you cannot even expect to be around? :) For some idiotic reason, Elrond forgets that Beren, Hurin, Turin, and more men in the past were all courageous, and the Elf-lord of Rivendell hates Aragorn He doesnt hate him, what is the reason for such idea? Elrond was his foster father. Elrond is old he of course remembers the stories of those heroes of the 1 age but in the FOTR scene he talks with Gandalf about men of today, of his times, not of older age. He doesnt think that they are not couragous, he thinks that they are scattered and leaderless, thats not the same. For some idiotic reason, Elrond forgets that Beren, Hurin, Turin, and more men in the past were all courageous For cinematic reasons the film about the Ring's war should be focused on the 3 age not 1 age. :) So the dialogues are mostly about 3 age and the story of the Rings.

I hope you discuss the differences in the characters intentions. Aragorn always intended to take up the throne, Treebeard was always angry about the destruction of the forests, Faramir had no intention of letting the ring closer to Gondor than could be helped, and the ring played a much more insidious part than is portrayed in the movies.

Some other big differences... 1. In the books, Frodo has journeyed with Bilbo before and is knowledgeable of the region and can speak elven. He is known as an "Elf Friend". The movies take a lot away from the Frodo character. 2. Battle of the Last Alliance - Sauron's demise is TOTALLY different in the books. He falls in combat with Elendil, Gil-Galad and Isuldur, killing Elendil and Gil-Galad in the duel. Isuldur cuts the ring from his finger AFTER Sauron has been defeated. Sauron is still powerful enough in the books at that point, that he would NOT have disintegrated after losing the Ring. The movies, understandably, wanted to show the Ring as the key to Sauron's power so that people would understand the ending when it happened.

The movies take a lot away from the Frodo character. Yes, one of the big weakness of the movies is this totaly unjust flattening of Frodos charachter. I dont mind that movie Frodo was not giving much swordfighting as many fans do seem to have problem with this. I dont mind this part at all. He was not much into swordfighting in the books anyway. But I m sorry that he was not depicted as wiser, more educated, more diplomatic, more curtius and more as elven friend. And the teacher and leader for younger hobbits. In the movies he lost so many of his important lines from the book. Many other heroes got much of development - Pippin, Sam, Arwen. But Frodo lost so much from his book version :(

There is one very minor point you missed out at the disappearance of Bilbo. In the books Gandalf lets off some fireworks to act as a distraction from Bilbo's disappearance at the party when he puts the ring on. A minor point but important as it shows Gandalf to be suspicious, even before Bilbo's behaviour at their meeting, & wanted something else for people to talk about.

Another difference, if minor, was the use of plate armour in the movies. In the book chain mail was all that was used, as the stories are meant to have an early medivia or Viking age feel to them
@TallisKeeton
@TallisKeeton 4 жыл бұрын
I remember that most warriors in LOTR wore chainmails. :) Frodo's mithril shirt was padded with leather. Not like it was in the movies with only a chainmail without any padding. That would be stupid I think :) But I think that Imrahil's knights of Dol Amroth used some other kind of armors - not usual chainmail. Maybe it was smt like scale mail. The scales armor could be adequate for them becouse Dol Amroth's army was from the seashore and mostly sailors. But it could be just me not remembering the book enough :)

I'll add one bit a trivia for now: We can determine that at least one year has passed in Peter Jackson's 'FotR' from Bilbo's birthday party to the Council of Elrond. - We learn in the extended edition that Jackson has changed the year of Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday to T.A. 3000 (from 3001). - We don't discover whether this is still also Frodo's birthday, but we can guess that he has still reached his majority (at 33 years) and no longer needs a guardian, so his year of birth is also altered (to 2967). - Bilbo's birthday is still September 22. The Council of Elrond falls on October 25. With everything that happens in between (just in the film), it is clear that much more than one month must have passed. The Council of Elrond could not be before October 25, 3001. - This time compression explains how Aragorn could be a young Ranger known to Thranduil at the time of the Battle of Five Armies (now the year 2940 instead of 2941). - I'm not even going to try to get into the years of birth for Samwise, Merry and Pippin at this time, but they are now much closer to Frodo in age.
@TallisKeeton
@TallisKeeton 4 жыл бұрын
I dont undestand how the addition of just one year (3000 - 3001 or 2940-2941) could have changed the age of Aragorn in such a way that Legolas could have known him as an adult in the times just after the BoTFA? :) At BoTFA times book!Aragorn was 10 years old :) So I just assume that in H:BoTFA they made him a bit older. But, realy Thranduils lines about Arathorn and Aragorn are not without logic even when we assume that he spoke about little boy. Becouse generaly he speaks about his father as great man, and he speaks about young Aragorn as the one who could be even greater. So I dont see why this Thanduils line should be critisised as much as it is? Thranduil could've known Arathorn and many of his ancestors. And Thranduil could've send Legolas not as ally to adult Aragorn but as a teacher to young Aragorn. :) I always hold an opinion that between the scene of Gandalf's discovering that Bilbo's ring is the one (in Bag end before he is going south to see Saruman), and the scenes of the hobbit's journey to Bree (to wait for Gandalf) is a span of at least half a year. It was becouse I assumed that Barliman's (innkeepr) line about not seeing Gandalf for half a year was filmmakers suggestion about how much time went between the revealing the true nature of the ring and the start of the journey. and of course how much time Gandalf was jailed in Saruman's tower.

In terms of a truly faithful adaptation of the books, I cannot recommend the BBC radio adaptation of the Lord of the Rings enough. Even if you love the movies, as I do, you'll get a lot out of listening to the radio version, which includes pretty much everything from the books (with the exception of Tom Bombadil, who sadly still doesn't make the cut; though the BBC produced a separate radio play regarding the Tom Bombadil sections of the story).

I think a huge thing that the movies changed is the attitude of frodo, I feel like they didn’t have enough time to develop frodo because they skipped the years and years that frodo stayed in the shire with the ring. In the books frodo is intelligent, self sufficient, brave, and educated. The books really don’t develop that at all, frodo is kind of depicted as wimpy and can’t seem to do much, every time something happens he falls apart. Like, when frodo gets stabbed in the book he stays fairly put together for days before he almost gives in, and in the movies he falls apart immediately. It makes sense why they did this, to make the story fit into a movie, but I didn’t like that frodo wasn’t a hero in the movies, he was sort of just a dude carrying the ring

I get why people might say that Tolkien's books are slow and "boring", or they're a slog. But to me, it's his wordiness that adds more dimension to the world we're experiencing. Instead of just delivering information, his wording tends to have more personality and texture (for example, "this cave is scary" vs "there is a fell spirit in the air"). Sure, it makes for a longer read, but it's more rewarding. After all, it's the journey, not the destination.

@ Joshua Muno Are they redoing the Lord of the Rings as a series? Regarding Tom Bombadil, i don't think that character would have worked very well with the tone of the movie. I think it would have been out of place, similar like the Goblin king song in the Hobbit movie.

An excellent beginning to a series I have often contemplated doing in a blog. I may still do so one day. But this is very necessary to help those who know only the movies to see the sub-creation of Tolkien more clearly and to point out how much more detailed and deep the books were written as opposed to Jackson's version in the movies. Keep going! There is much more to be said...

Your videos are always so well done, but this series is my favorite. Thank you so much for explaining the differences very matter-of-factly! Middle-earth is my happy place, has been since my mother started reading the stories to me as a young kid. I'm chronically ill now as an adult and anytime life gets too heavy my caregiver just has to ask, "do you need to go to Middle-earth?" and immediately the burden eases. Besides all the movies, I have a whole bookshelf dedicated to Tolkien's works. I'm very excited for the release of the Fall of Gondolin, Idril was always one of my favorite elves!

Thank you kind sir(s) for putting such amazing content together and making it easy to understand. It's 2.11am and I'd better get to bed In my part of middle earth I'm way past a decent bedtime I've done both, and listened to the BBC radio series (which is awesome), and will watch this with much enjoyment later today Great channel and cool new ideas Just watched and fantastic comparison - Merry and Pippin's swords a fine point; Mr Tolkein didn't just have things happening by chance Without this sword of old would Merry's stabbing of the Witch King have been as effective A tiny reason why these books are so unbelievably good Missed Tom too but knew they'd decided to cut him from the films - didn't mind too much as the flow of the film mostly about haste Friends and companions amid the darkness - that's writ large in the Lord of the Rings; think that subtlety of common decency and meeting friends as well as foes was missing from the films (magnificent though they are) Excellent update and looking forward to part two

I think Lurtz was superfluous and that Tom, Goldberry and Glorfindel should have been included! I still love the films, but those thoughts sour it somewhat! I don't think there's a true fan of the books, I'm including the Hobbit and Silmarillion in this, that regrets their absence! Tom and Goldberry are important because Tom is powerful, he rescues the Hobbits from the Huorn, Old Man Willow, seems to have power over the ring, but only in the realm he has made for himself with the river woman's daughter, they both aid the party and give advice about the Barrow Downs, where significant weapons are obtained and the Hobbits are rescued again by Tom! Glorfindel is one of the mightiest Elves in or out of Middle Earth, and appears in reincarnation as far back as the Silmarillion, where he slays a balrog in Gondolin and is slain himself, he then resides within the Halls of Mandos, he later returns to Middle Earth, long before Gandalf or the other wizards, eventually to take up residence with Elrond at Rivendell! It is Glorfindel, riding his horse Asfaloth that rescues Frodo from the Ring-wraiths! Whoops, I seem to of got a bit carried away!

I'd say that one year has passed from when Gandalf left the Shire for research for the Ring and hunt for Gollum since Concerning Hobbits scene (where Bibo starts writing in his book) is on his birthday (September 22) and later Saruman says that the Ringwraiths crossed River Isen on Midsummer's Eve and Sauron couldn't have detected the Ring earlier than on Bilbo's birthday, even if the Nazgul had to ride some time to get to The Shire from Mordor.

Just found your channel today and it looks like a pure gold for someone who loves Middle-Earth. I love to watch the movies from time to time, since they take less time than reading the book and the visuals of the movies bring me a lot of joy. Unfortunately, I tend to forget what are the differences between the books and the movies as times goes. That's why I was happy when I saw you had a video on this. Just one remark I would make is, if you can differentiate a bit when you are talking about the book and when about the movies. Maybe something visual like a sign somewhere on the screen? It's a bit hard to keep track of things ... at least for a non native English speaker like me. Subscribed.

As always, a great video! Thank you so much for putting your energy into this~ May I request one thing, though: I highly believe you're writing a script for those videos - Would it be possible to make subtitles, then? For me, it's super hard to follow people talking without also reading what they say, especially with such formal topics and all. Or, if that's too much for you, putting the full text into the video description would help me a lot already. I do see that subtitles are a lot of work and somewhat understand if you're not willing to make them, but it definitly would help me, just as much as it would make your videos accessible to disabled folks.

I think that this is one of the only cases where the movies are better than the books. Tolkien was great at writing settings and characters, but not so great at writing stories. Jackson's adaption really tightened things up and each change seems to make more sense than what was original (with a few exceptions)
