In this episode we meet our guest : Catherine Neenan who wanted to share her experience of 'Flooding' or Excessive menstrual bleeding in an effort to prevent other people having to experience what she did.
Catherine's experience is increasingly common as women navigate through the perimenopause years and in most cases the episodes of flooding are caused by a reduction in the hormone progesterone relative to the levels of Oestrogen - which are also declining. Too much menstrual blood is laid down and not enough progesterone is available to hold it in place - hence why it comes away as a 'flood'.
Do watch this Video to increase you knowledge of this symptom and what acton to take. Also do consider how you would support people in the workplace who may be experiencing this symptom.
Heavy or excessive menstrual bleeding can be a distressing problem, and is one of the most common reasons for women to visit their GP in UK.
1 in 3 women describe their period as heavy and 1 in 20 women consult their GP every year in UK about this problem.
In more than half of cases heavy menstrual bleeding has no obvious cause. However, it is sometimes related to the presence of organic disease.
Fibroids: benign enlargements of muscle in the wall of the uterus (womb) • Endometrial polyps: benign outgrowths of the lining of the uterus
• Endometriosis: misplaced lining of the uterus
• Pelvic inflammatory disease: infection of the pelvis
• Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
• Cancer of the uterus (Endometrial Carcinoma)
Other causes of irregular and heavy bleeding may be:
• Abnormal hormone cycles
• Blood clotting disorders (rare)
• Thyroid gland problems - (also rare)
• Intra-uterine contraceptive devices (copper IUCDs) • Warfarin or a similar blood thinning medicine
• Some medicines used in chemotherapy
The average total amount of blood lost during a period is 35ml.
Bleeding is considered abnormal when more than 80ml is lost, because if you are losing more than 80 ml during each period, you are at a risk of developing anaemia. Some women lose much more blood. Bleeding more than a litre each month has been recorded, but this is very unusual.
Regular heavy periods with no other bleeding during the cycle are not normally associated with significant disease in young women. Irregular heavy periods and bleeding between periods or after sexual intercourse may indicate a serious condition. Other symptoms to watch out for include prolonged periods, tiredness, light headedness, poor sleep patterns and breathlessness.
Although in most cases irregular periods do not indicate a serious condition, it is always wise to seek advice from your GP.

Thanks so much! I'm was flooding last week for 10 days, I wasn't able to visit my gp. She prescribed trexamine acid for three days. It worked, but after the three days the flooding came back. GP put me on progesterone for 5 days. I'm so sacred that the flooding will come back now. I will have a full examination in the hospital, but there are long waiting lists. I visited a homeopatic docter, he told me my hormones are all over the place. Low progesteron and very high cortisol. I'm white as a sheet and very tired. I'm a nurse, can't go to work, told my manager and she understands it.

I had flooding for 3 weeks after my 3rd covid jab in Jan 2022 aged 44. I ended up needing emergency treatment in hospital which consisted of tranexamic acid intravenously and norethisterone tablets 3x a day for 2 weeks. Each year since I have had another flooding episode around the same time of year, really odd. Just happened again. My ferritin hangs around 6-9, Hb varies between 10 and 12 but that is taking prescription strength iron constantly. It’s debilitating and exhausting. Now trying tranexamic acid tablets to lessen blood flow during periods. Perimenopause symptoms kicked in after the first bout of heavy bleeding. But the worst symptom by far is the flooding, it’s terrifying. I am normal bmi and healthy otherwise.

I’m so sorry to hear about your experience!! Have you ever been tested for histamine intolerance?

Thanks for responding. No I haven’t been tested for histamine intolerance but I do have some allergies that developed in my 30s. I have seasonal hayfever and oral allergies to nuts, some fruits and an intolerance to soya and I have had allergic reaction to two types of antibiotics.

@@Belhel5533it might be worth considering booking a session with myself. We can talk you through your symptoms and how to manage them using a histamine management protocol. It does sound as though you may have histamine intolerance.
