September is the month of mental health so permit me this side track; To anyone who's ever been a victim of bullying / hate / violence because of their appearance, gender, orientation, race : DO NOT ever let a hateful notion 'there's something wrong with me' sink in. Trust me, it's a recipe for self hatred, I've wasted half my life feeling it. When we suffer and we need a break, it's only natural to think: 'maybe if I wasn't 'different', if I was 'normal' I would be accepted. No, haters will always find something to pray upon. I've always had kinda androgynous look, which was a fuel for bullies when I was growing up. I embraced it, used it to my advantage in my acting / modeling career, I was almost the face of Leon in these new Resident Evil games :) There might be extremely toxic people around you who can see our potential and value but will keep and drag us down with intent and hideus determination. They do it out of jealousy, they don't want to see us happy or sucessful. They want us docile so we can be manipulated.

I can completely relate to that coyote moment Floris. On my Friday evening run three pelicans flew overhead towards the sunset and I just stopped in awe at the beauty - no grappling for my phone - just enjoyed the special moment. ‘Experience the present!’ Excellent discussion in so many ways! 🙏🥰

You surely are seeing lots of beautiful wildlife on your runs Jennifer. From pelicans to kangaroos and everything in between. So important we distance ourselves from our phone and enjoying those moments, well done. 🙏

A great discussion! I most enjoyed the part where you talked about seeing the coyote Floris and feeling emotional, I can relate after being super busy and then taking time out for a run and really being in the moment.

Excellent conversation and so much to unpack. I want to highlight that I appreciate that she brought up numerous factors to consider when thinking about mental health, one of them being gut health. I think that many people don't realize how much what they put into their bodies on a daily basis makes a huge impact on their well being. Also, finding something outside of sport that they enjoy is a huge help.

Totally, the gut health was an important one for sure. Everything is connected. When we are stressed we digest food much differently than in a relaxed state. Great takeaway about finding enjoyment outside of sports as well. 👍

Thanks for sharing your takeaways! I ate pretty healthy even before I realized how much gut health impacted my mental health. The changes I've been able to make (and now support my clients in making!) have made SUCH a big difference both with my mental health and sport performance. What are you doing outside your sport that brings you joy?

Absolutely wonderful discussion. Such a great conversation. I especially appreciate the discussion of how mental health and inflammation correlate. When you can address one, it aids the other. Thanks for the interview!

Totally, it's pretty wild how closely connected our mind and body are. We can literally make ourselves physically ill by thought alone. Dr Joe Dispenza recently also shared that our thoughts can have massive healing power. So yes, important one to have our mind in the right place.

Inflammation is SUCH an important (and under discussed!) topic in mental health. Sometimes I wonder if I should just call myself an inflammation coach because I do so much to address it with my clients. What steps are you already taking to keep your inflammation under control?

This was a packed episode! My biggest takeaway was cold plunges, or at least a cold shower spurt to start. Laughter as medicine, YES YES YES!!!HO HO HO., another key to be noted. Without a doubt having a back up or several back up interestes for those times when we injure ourselves and CAN'T exercise. Being very active usually means we have a chance to experience some events that set us 'off track'. Thanks for this @FloriaGierman, great interview.

Great episode! My favorite takeaway is to manage anxiety in the moment by stimulating the vagus nerve - deep breathing, walking, stretching & gratitude.

Thanks for sharing your takeaway! I'm OBSESSED with the vagus nerve haha! It really is the best way to "hack" the body out of anxiety! What vagus nerve stimulating technique will you use when you're feeling anxious?

'Hiding behind sport' at 28:20 resonated with me, looking into folate deficiency, and stimulating vagus nerve using different methods are key takeaways for me.

@@ignitehealthcoachingwellne7565 Thank you for the interview. I am currently doing breathing exercises and yoga. The conversation about laughter touched a nerve for me (literally! 🙂). I used to be more jovial and laugh/smile. After watching this, making consisted effort to be less serious and laugh with my family/friends as much as possible. As you mentioned even fake laughter helps, and I did do some laughter yoga classes back in the day.

Wow, so many takeaways here! I can relate a lot to the moment with the coyote. And also the laughter therapy! Love that! While listening to the podcast I had a real "aha" moment, something that actually should have been obvious to me already as a singer, but somehow I never consciously registered it. Singing with good breath support also uses the diaphragm and abdomen very much in the same way that laughter does and it also activates the face muscles and makes the oxygen flow....it made me realize one big reason why I always feel so happy after singing, no matter what mood I was in before I started. It gave me the idea to start including some laughing yoga as warm ups for the kids I teach. What a great way to activate the "singing support" in a fun way! 😅

Really enjoyed this conversation (as I do with this channel period!), high level the recognition of our ‘why’ behind our motivations to run. This can be a tough conversation to have with ourselves, I’ve definitely found myself piling on workouts to outrun a non-related running stressor. And also appreciated to reflect on value of developing a non-athletic hobby/pursuit to be able to manage mental health at time of a physical injury/setback and so having an activity to complement my running that is not athletically based. Thanks again for the conversation!

And it can absolutely be a great stress reliever and opportunity to escape for a little bit...in healthy doses of course! Kudos to you for recognizing the unhealthy connection and it sounds like you've been able to take steps to have a healthier relationship with your running! I'd love to know what your non-running hobby is?

@@ignitehealthcoachingwellne7565 I do play guitar (have for past 20 years) but my answer with my tongue firmly-in-cheek I was going to reply with an anwswer of “listening to podcasts and learning about MAF training from Floris”, lol…as that was an intense pursuit back in the spring (the learning that is - its worked, and now I’m all in with MAF Test #3 next week - loving the results injury free!!) but I digress and that of course would have been a side-step. To answer the question more directly, my true non-athletic passion is oddly enough “strategic hobby board games”, people might be familiar with (Settlers of) Catan, Forbidden Island. Years ago I enjoyed having Poker nights with friends, but loathed losing money or taking money from my friends - so instead these strategy games are great to have at the table with 2-4 friends and we work our problem-solving brains at the table with either competitive play or co-operatively. We only “compete” for bragging rights and not lose actual money. Recently my friends and I have enjoyed deeper strategic games such as Power Grid or Scythe or the addicting card game called Tichu (etc). Then oddly enough, this same group of 3 friends (who routinely show for game nights) followed me to then buy mountain bikes before the pandemic and now I’m pacing my one friend from the gaming table in his first half-marathon in Toronto, Ont. At the TCS Waterfront Half Marathon on Oct.15!!!!!! So…the nerds can run too! Haha - cheers all - have great weekend.
