Kamila Valieva was leading after the short program, but had an uncharacteristic free performance putting her off the Olympic podium. Peter Jensen has been a mental performance coach and sports psychologist for Olympic athletes for over 20 years, so we got his insight on Valieva pushing through which he compares with Simone Biles and Joannie Rochette’s Olympic experiences, and on what Valieva will have to do to get through this.

How many illiterate, superficial and not deeply thinking people are in the West, it amazes me. Do you believe your media, there is only one lie around. There could only be two versions with Camilla: 1. A laboratory error is accidental or special in order to extend sanctions against the Russian national team at the next Olympics. Sanctions against the Russian national team ended at this Olympics. I inform you that all the samples of Camilla over the past 2 years were all negative, except for the allegedly detected microdose for 1.5 months taken at the Russian Championship. Then there was the European Championship 0.5 months before the Olympics, where she brilliantly won and also with a negative breakdown. I also inform you that the sample for 0.5 months from the European Championship was presented earlier than for the sample made for 1.5 months and was presented right after the performance in team competitions, does it seem suspicious to you. 2. A microdose about alleged doping could accidentally get into Camilla's body, her grandfather uses such a drug for the heart and he lives with her in the same house. And also someone could have spied on food or drinks among the entourage of coaches, functionaries, other figure skaters, etc. After all, this drug, according to some scientists, cannot improve sports performance. All Russian athletes, coaches and functionaries around sports know perfectly well that Russia is under sanctions and their athletes are checked twice as much and more thoroughly than athletes from other countries. No normal and adequate athlete, coach or doctor of the Russian national team will not use doping under the fear that the Russian national team will be punished with sanctions for several more Olympics in the future. Personally, I am more inclined that this is a US special operation to discredit Russia. They forced the Swedish laboratory to give false test results for Camilla.

It was so difficult to watch Kamila fall apart like that. That committee who permitted her to skate and the people around her were so wrong in having her skate. The reaction of the other two Russian girls standing on the podium was so difficult to watch also. The silver medalist said she never wanted to skate again. The coaching staff for those girls failed all three. I wish I hadn’t watched. Something very wrong is going on at that Russian skating school.

There’s a point in the kiss and cry after the scores are announced and she’s been crying that she’s seem to be smiling and laughing and she says “at least now they can have a medal ceremony” (because there wouldn’t be one if she had ended up in the top three). Her coach immediately continue scolding her that that is not the right attitude for an athlete and to be a fighter type of thing. It just was a revealing moment and broke my heart that the girl was trying to find a moment of relief and find some sort of silver lining to the situation and have consideration for the other skaters even for a moment and as she was sad, but that wasn’t allowed. @@ddjr6673 Anna found out that she had the gold when she was in the green room. There, athletes are never with the team. This stupid practice has been going on for years. I don’t know who came up with this, it seems strange to me too, but this has been done at all international competitions for 5 years, no less. The fans should have known about it, it's too obvious. And the figure skating bloggers who are now doing a black PR order against the Tutberidze coaching staff (such as Fran and Paola La) know this for sure. They know, but they pretend they don't know, and they gobble up this nonsense about Anna, abandoned by everyone, by everyone. This is not the only lie spread about Russian figure skating and Tutberidze. If she was so bad, everyone who left her would not have returned to her, and there would not have been a queue of people who wanted to learn from her. But such are the laws of black PR. If the coaches were awarded medals, I don’t remember exactly, but it seems that Tarasova would be the most titled. I've been rooting for Anna for probably 4 years now. But I think all three of our girls are fantastic and I was expecting some drama to happen at the Olympics. Well, because 3 skaters with cosmos-level levels, and there is only one gold medal. How not to be dramatic? It was inevitable. But then again, where does the coach? It so happened that there were several talents at once, what was she to do? Play in favor of someone alone? It is clear that this is not so. So, Eteri did everything right, and fate decreed as we all saw. One is happy, the other is sad. But this is a sport, it's always like that here. She wasn’t personally denying it, (which despite so many people trying to argue there’s enough evidence there is and they know it). I don’t think she should’ve been made to skate. Valieva broke down mentally during her performance. You can see it in her face. Just compare with any other recent performance of this same program Carmen, such as in recent European championship. This program has parts that are more lively and animated and she smiles and moves with enthusiasm. But this time she was serious, totally disconnected from the music. On the other hand the short program has a different music, more emotional, like a lament, that she was able to connect to the music. Also figure skating requires being mentally very strong, able to overcome of a fall in the start. Is frequent to see young skaters, but sometimes older skaters too, to fail a jump, and them another one, and have a disastrous performance. It's absurd to think that she failed on purpose because she was told to do so, if they wanted her to fail they could have withdrawn for whatever reason. If she had to underscore on purpose she could have popped two quads into a double or simple, something that happens even for Yuzuru Hanyu.

The women's free skate showed us the results of a very abusive school and set of coaches. Valieva fell apart while she was performing and was berated publicly by her coach. She disappeared crying. The gold medal winner said she didn't know what had happened and that she was happy she had won, but felt nothing... No one greeted her after her victory. The silver medal winner threw a temper tantrum because she was supposed to win gold and was owed gold because it was her turn. She initially refused to go on the podium. After floods of tears, the Russian girls stood uneasily on the podium with their stuffed animals looking so awkward and uncomfortable. The two Russians looked like kids, not women, who know how to work hard, not eat or drink much, and to win gold. I thought they looked abused. Someone needs to investigate that school and other schools like it who treat kids this way. The Russian girls are not developing normally. It makes me think figure skating is not a very good sport for young girls to go into. I feel sad for all the people caught in this trap. A coach should not abuse the people he coaches no matter how close the relationship! What happened after the competition was over was more telling and more important than the doping issue.

Thanks for featuring an expert’s take on what we saw. So much for irreparable damage!… Kamila was certainly the focus but this event was traumatic for others too. And sadly I worry about the adults around them. Her coach Eteri -asking- demanding Kamila tell why she gave up. This is the first thing she hears off ice!? As if she could give an answer to that! She broke down while Eteri was scolding her. Dani G puts a limp hand on her waist but wouldn’t look at her on the way. Eteri finally put her hand vaguely around her shoulder at the kiss and cry but nothing warm. Kamila cries and cries. We can’t hear what she’s saying. After the scores are out, at one point she is smiling and says something like “ at least there will be a medal ceremony now”. That revealed something to me. Poor girl is trying to find a silver lining to the situation and maybe you had something like relief? But Eteri tells her sternly that’s not sportsmanship/athleticism (sorry I don’t know the right word). Meanwhile Sasha is having a meltdown too as she wanted to do a 5 quad program for so long and she finally did and it just… still was not enough. As she was led to believe. She’s crying and angry and cameras are following her. On more than one occasion she is running away from them, crying and hiding behind curtains. Meanwhile Anna is standing all by her lonesome, eyes wide, with her teddy bear in her hands… probably wondering how the heck does one enjoy this kind of Olympic gold… Nobody congratulates her for ages, let alone celebration. I admire all these women, everyone who competed in that event from the first to the last. Everyone was under so much pressure. Even watching it I feel exhausted. And for some of those girls I do worry. I hope they gave family and friends who can help them through..

Kamila Valieva is the most perfect figure skater I have ever seen in my life . Plastic like a ballerina . And very soulful eyes . And , as it rolls , words cannot convey it at all . The sports bastards deliberately broke the girl before the final performance and did not let her perform in the final to Ravel 's magical music so that her dance would go down in the history of figure skating as the most perfect thing a person can create . I look at the coach and thought something is wrong with this person. That was before all of this started to happen. Then she failed to protect her, then she yelled at her when she came off of the ice tonight instead of hugging her. What a grotesque display of inhumanity. I'm not sure how Kamilla can go back to being a normal human being. I don't know how she avoids being traumatized. I'm trying to remember what it was like when I was 15 and what or how I would have thought if everyone around me that was supposed to support me did not. The poor girl. The fact all the girls have stuffed animals with them in public places is a huge indicator of that lack of humanness in the totality of the environment. Part of this is the context. Russia is ruled by a dictator who wants grandiose displays of success and power. He wants Russia to win and doesn't care about the cost, so his regime spawned a widespread doping scandal. Into this mix comes the coach who has found a way to squeeze high performance out of young girls, provided that perform before they are 19. If the coach fails what happens to her in her life? Putin poisons people he doesn't like. So the coach is under abnormal pressure to begin with. She squeezes the girls and to squeeze more they dope the girls. Then they get caught. Russia squeezes the IOC and whomever else is involved to allow the show to go on. And at the center of it is a very well meaning, decent, hardworking little girl who is immensely gifted in figure skating. I would love to see Kamila perform again, but not in competition, and not if it is healthy and fulfilling for her. I saw her interviewed before the Olympics and she said she'd like to go into psychology. Sometimes that interest is the result of someone trying to figure themselves out. She seemed like an incredibly nice person. Maybe she can help herself out even as she is helping others.

Thomas Bach's remarks are the pinnacle of hypocrisy. In this season, Kamila's doping test results were clean at four international competitions, but only the test for the Russian national competition showed polluted result. Therefore, this case required a thorough investigation and verification, but there was not enough time. As CAS rejected IOC's indictment to ban Kamila's participation in individual competition, the IOC should have announced that IOC would normally award medals for the results of the game, but that medal and record could be deprived if Kamila did intentional doping. The IOC's shocking announcement "If Kamila stands on podium, medal award ceremony would be canceled" must have acted as tons of pressure on Kamila, And this IOC's Threat made her step down from the podium by herself. As a result, the IOC brutally threatened a young girl under the age of 16 to take the bronze medal from Russia and give it to Japan. Furthermore this ultimately made it impossible to watch Kamila's performance in full of heavenly and mysterious beauty, which all figure fans around the world wanted to see. The IOC should take the greatest responsibility for this!

I think the IOC acted appropriately. They gave Kamila the opportunity to do her skates since there was not enough time to do a full investigation and make a determination. I also don't fault them for postponing the awards ceremony until after final determination has been made. It would have not been fair to the other skaters if she would have gotten a metal when there is an investigation going on. Obviously this was way too much emotional stress to go through all of this all at once and I don't blame her for not skating her best because of it, but she was given the opportunity and that's all they could do. I do wish none of this would have happened or at least if she could have had time to deal with this separately and privately. I am hoping for a good comeback story with her.

No matter how many excuses are made on behalf the Eteri Tutberidze, she is the main culprit behind the collapse of her teenage proteges and a serious investigation or expose needs to be initiated against her. It's bad enough what she and the Russian Skating Federation subjected Kamila Valieva to but there was no reason for them to allow her to take part at this event. Especially after she tested positive for a banned drug. Win or lose, it did not benefit her nor her team mates. What's even worse was the lack of compassion displayed by Eteri after both Valieva and Anna skated. Immediately after Valieva ended her disastrous performance, Eteri could be heard responding in Russian, :why did you give up? And then to add insult to injury, all she could ask the gold medalist, Anna Sherbakova, "Why didn't you add the quad lutz?" Hopefully someone will eventually catch on after Sasha's outburst. Where she hurled out to Eteri "you knew, you knew!" It was so sad for her to assume that merely including multiple quads in her program minus any artistic drama alone would have captured her a gold medal! Yet, this is how Eteri manipulates her young proteges into psyching them up before they take a grand fall.

You're right! I am so angry and annoyed for her. Knowing Tutberidze's girls in light of history. Valieva has virtually no second chance at the Olympics. @@user-mr8yn6oh5f Yes, of course, the Russians are pushing figure skating forward, by getting prepubescent girls to jump quads, something Eteri cannot teach adults to do successfully. If she could teach adults to do it wouldn't you think she'd be coaching adults as well. Longevity of an athlete is very profitable for the athlete as well as the coach. But of course, she knows her training methods don't work on anyone over the age of 18 (due to putting immense pressure on the skater's spine) and so she does the next best thing - chronically cycling younger girls to replace those that have reached adulthood. Other coaches simply care more for the longevity of their skaters more than Eteri does, and that's why you don't see the women of other countries jumping a bunch of quads. So yes, you can feel proud about the fact that Russia is advancing the sport, but at an unsustainable human cost. The only beneficiary is the Russian state propaganda machine. Do you really think western media "destroyed" Valieva because she's Russian? There will be another Russian to take her place for Gold. Russia will remain a figure skating powerhouse, regardless. This competition result is too convenient and she is too talented...I feel terrible even thinking it but it would not surprise me given this coach, she has too much to protect. Sad day regardless in the skating world...trust is gone and nothing is as it appears to be, athletes arent even safe with their coaches. Eteri was well aware that she wouldn't be taking the brunt of the punishment. She and her entourage of coaching staff and doctors noticeably distanced themselves from Valieva after the scandal broke out. Reports said they weren't present when Valieva had to go through closed doors interviews with the press, and left her out to dry. Valieva was a sacrificial lamb indeed. Eteri sees her skaters as disposable, ephemeral. She wouldn't want to risk her own reputation to defend her skater. She must be held responsible if we're to see any improvement in fairness and the wellbeing of skaters.

Raise the minimum age to 18+. All 3 Russian girls are very talented (especially Valieva and Scherbakova), but as it is now, these poor girls careers are probably over. We won't see them next Olympic cycle because they will be past Eteri's expiration date and there is a new crop of 12 yr olds that are right now being promised Olympic medals in 2026, when they will be near that 'magic age' to win. Right now older girls don't stand a chance at making the Russian teams. Valieva is a rare talent and should have a long and impressive career, but sadly I know better. I don't want to see disposable teen quad-squads anymore. I want to see healthy athletes with proper technique, skating multiple Olympic cycles and making names for themselves. I want to see them smile and enjoy skating and their Olympic moments, not broken down physically and psychologically before they even become adults.

why are you so sure that you know better what our skaters really want? To achieve such success at such a young age when you can leave the sport and go to study in your chosen direction at the same time as your school friends, and then not sacrifice your personal life and start a full-fledged family when you want, and not when your career lets go - is not such an unattractive goal that certainly none of these girls will want to. Rather, on the contrary. Don't force your desires on them. You only know better what you personally want, but what they want is known to them, but not to you.

@@user-go2gm3xu5t "To achieve such success at such a young age"... yes, but at what cost? Cardiac medications for teenagers, menopause (Lupron) injections to delay puberty/menses, subsisting on powdered nutrients, only being allowed to swish water in your mouth and then spit it out at competitions, daily weigh-ins where gaining half a pound is said to throw off jumping abilities, when it absolutely shouldn't if proper technique is taught, and then debilitating back injuries and bone fractures. Is this worth it to 'win' at such a young age? Rarely (but it does happen) there is a talent that can achieve great success at such a young age in a healthy, natural way,, but when you can turn out endless teenagers at this level and it becomes the standard, something 'wrong' is happening in the training. Peaking in your early 20s, as a healthy athlete, shouldn't throw off the rest of life's events. It opens up all the choices then - to retire and move on, or to continue skating. At least this way, the chronic, permanent back injuries don't force a decision. Now, Russian girls that wants a longer career, past the age of 18 have to defect to skate for other countries. That's a shame for Russian sports.

As for heart drugs for teenagers, wait for the court's decision, respect the presumption of innocence. This is your Western value! Lupron is not for Russia, it is for Norway. Years later, Marit Bjergen told about this in her autobiography, as well as that she was caught on this doping, but she was forgiven. Of course, she is not Russian, it was necessary to forgive. The Russians would not be forgiven. Powder nutrition and other crap is a slander spread by bloggers who carry out an order for black PR in relation to the Tutberidze coaching staff. These statements are not supported by any evidence and are a gross lie. In sports such as figure skating or gymnastics, great success is achieved at such a young age. The Russians are far from pioneers in this. But the Americans can, the Chinese can, and everyone else can, only the Russians can't. This is if you follow your rotten morality. Skaters who cannot get into the Russian national team leave for other countries because they want to compete at the European and World Championships. They can be understood, we release such girls. There is nothing unusual about this. For example, a Japanese woman competed for Russia, who in Japan did not find a pair for pair skating, but wanted to compete at the World Championships. Age has nothing to do with it.

@@Kristin2885 "even when it comes from the mouths of her own competitors"? Competitors? Why does this surprise you? Unscrupulous competitors are commonplace. Russia at the state level constantly faces unfair competition from the West, so it is not strange that competitors at the private level behave unfairly. "from science (doping)"? No, science has nothing to do with it. Any allegations must be proven in the manner prescribed by law, and no one should be punished without proven guilt. After all, this is what the West declares as a free value. But this free value does not apply to Russia and Russians. For the Russians, the West has another criterion - "highly-likly", and this magic formula is enough for the West to accuse Russia and the Russians of anything, strike anyone with their rights and punish anyone in any way that comes to the mind of the crazed Western officials. There is no regulation in which it would be prescribed what kind of violation (true or imaginary) which corresponds to the punishment. It all depends on the imagination of those. who arrogated to himself the right to judge and punish. Hence the deprivation of our athletes of the flag, anthem and the right to represent the country, and sometimes the right to participate in competitions, to practice their profession. Hence all the other sanctions. "chronically and egregiously (right now) as in this particular camp"? What are you talking about? About doping? Doesn’t it bother you that there is not a single proven case "in this particular camp", and the case with Camila is clearly a one-time accidental hit of a prohibited drug, or is it a laboratory error in general, given all the facts that have already been published in the CAS decision? Or do you mean something other? It's not clear from your comment. What is so terrible going on "in this particular camp"? And what evidence is there to support that this terrible thing actually happens, and is not a figment of the imagination of black PR? Any criticism is not refuted, and evidence is required for any accusations, do not substitute concepts. Why are you unhappy with this? If you were accused of something, would you not demand to provide evidence of guilt? And all this is perceived as anti-Russian actions, because unsubstantiated accusations (those same "highly-likly") are constantly pouring on our heads, and we have been fed up with all this for a long time. If you were in our place, you might have long ago grabbed a machine gun when Western "well-wishers" approached you. I have no idea what Karolyi did wrong. It's none of my business, he didn't work in my country and I don't get into it. Although I checked, and Karolyi personally does not seem to be accused of anything by law enforcement agencies. Then I don't understand what you're accusing him of. But this is a completely different topic. Your argument looks like Eteri is to blame for something, because Karolyi is to blame for something. That is, just in case, in reserve, for the future. This is some kind of absurdity, which I do not know how to discuss at all. In my mind, punishment should follow exclusively guilt proven in the manner prescribed by law, and the punishment should be such as is established by law for a specific violation. And, of course, there should be no collective responsibility "for the company". Punishment must be individual. The West used to declare such a procedure for bringing to justice, but now the West has decided to give a damn about all this if it wants to act against Russia. Naturally, this does not seem right to the Russians and we will never agree with the justice of such anti-Russian actions. Accuse - prove. And nothing else.

Also, why noone assume that Valieva indeed could be a clean, truly clean athlet, which semple B can show no dopes, and all the situation is indeed an oweful accident which happened with breaking investigations time norms, which makes russians unable to respond to facts properly? Also why people do not consider that for such a young girl to be falsely accused of wrongdoing, be worldwide shamed for that, without an ability to stand for herself and lose a chance to compete while being the best in the world, can be not less traumatic? Why nobody assumed that russian coaches allowed Valieva to compete DEFENDING the reputation, the soul and dignity of the athlet? Why americans do not want to consider an idea that Valieva may fell because of IOC decision and public injustice? Why being so tolerant to cultural differences within the USA and Canada people lose the tolerance while judging thoughs and actions of people from other countries living in other countries? Yes, it is possible that Valieva actually took the dope, because of her coaches or medics or accidently because of her grandpa. Yes, it is possible that coaches abuse her. Yes, it's very likely that the performance was traumatic because her coaches allowed her to perform. Yes, this perspective deserves at very least to be heard, and a discussion can be initiated.

She's going to get a lot of help and support and it's going to be up to HER whether she wants to come back. They did test her, as they do every athlete when they arrived at the Beijing Olympics. Her test was negative, as they have always been with the exception of the competition in December. The other Russian ice skaters were probably being given the same medications, there was just a mistake in how far ahead of the Russian competition they stopped giving it to her.

@@janetmckenzie146 Camila, like our other figure skaters, took tests many times from August to February. They win all the time, so they are constantly tested. And all their tests are clean. The only test Camila passed among the rest contains a microscopic dose of a banned substance. Don't you think that with the systematic use of doping aimed at achieving an effect, the picture with the tests would look different? At the same time, let me remind you of the case of an American figure skater who was found to have the same substance, but she was acquitted, considering that this substance got into her body from shampoo. The shampoo is not exclusive, Camila could also use the same shampoo. Shall we punish her for it? Will we punish her coaches and parents at the same time? She is not an American figure skater, her cannot be justified. Is it ok, what do you think?

@@tellthetruthna8523 do you mean agent? In our team competitions, athletes have agents, but I don’t know about individual events. Most likely there are those who have advertising contracts. But the agent will not go against the will of the parents and the athlete herself. And it is right. His job is to advise, not to decide. In general, a strange mixture - both in business to advise something, and to control relationships with a trainer? Maybe even in your personal life to climb? Some kind of superhero. Such a person has too many powers, so I think that he is not needed. An ordinary agent and a commissioner for minors' rights are enough. And your distrust of your parents is discouraging. There is something wrong and evil about it.

@@Mica_T I genuinely believe she did fail on purpose. No one has brought this up but I think the giveaway that this did happen was Sasha's reaction over not winning gold. She seemed so sure she would win gold that she broke down when she didn't. If Kamila was expected to place gold, which everyone did, then why would Sasha be so disappointed? No doubt Kamila would score miles over her and that wouldn't be a surprise to her. I think it was decided that Kamila would throw her performance, thereby setting the stage for the other two to get gold and silver, and it seems Sasha expected to get gold over Anna but it didn't happen and she was livid.
