I am a psychiatry DOCTOR who treats mental illness in people with learning disabilities on a regular basis. They're a wonderful group but society still doesn't treat them as well as they should. Turns out that the Royal Family were no exception. This episode is analyzing and reacting to the story of "the secret sisters" - cousins in the Royal Family who were mentally unwell and had learning disabilities. Not only were they institutionalized, but the Royals faked their deaths!
There are lots of medical bits covered on this episode, including what learning disabilities are, how we manage it, why we don't institutionalize people anymore, and why the so-called "purity of the bloodline" might come into their decision. It also covers Princess Margaret's journey into seeing a psychiatrist and having therapy.

The way they treated their family members reminds me of how JFK's sister Rosemary was treated by her father. She suffered from what was probably bipolar disorder and had frequent violent mood swings. Joseph thought that she would embarrass the family and ruin his political aspirations for his sons so he had her lobotomized. The lobotomy was done incorrectly and left her mental faculties diminished so much she couldn't speak or walk. Then the father had her institutionalized for the rest of her life (and never visited her). Apparently he didn't tell his wife about the lobotomy until after it was done and the other Kennedy children didn't find out about it until 20 years later. It's absolutely horrible the lengths some people will go to to protect their political standing. Just sickening really.

Same decade and time frame. This is how the lesser then were treated back then. Put them away. There was a certain way of appearing to the public and to appear perfect. No one back then would anticipate the internet and everyone knowing what went on. Joe Kennedy would never had dreamed that the public would ever know what he did to Rosemary, or The RF did to these two cousins

Dr Carthy, if you haven't seen it I'd be interested to get your take on Big Mouth, the cartoon on netflix. Some of it is definitely juvenile, but they take hormones, depression, anxiety, etc and turn them into actual monsters that are outside of the kids and adults, so you actually see like, intrusive thoughts shown on screen. (Depression being a large cat that physically weighs someone down) Also some of the kids show different signs of mental health issues, like having rituals for one kid (or my fan theory one character may have a personality disorder)

As an American, I've always found stuff about English royalty fascinating. Sad to learn that not only were the sisters put in an institution but also that their deaths were faked. With all the various lands and houses that the royal family owns, surely they could have lived in one of these residences with some live-in help. The closest thing America has ever had to royalty would be the Kennedy family. That family also had a member, Rose Kennedy, with intellectual disabilities. Afraid that some of her behaviors could cause the family to get a bad reputation, they decided to allow Dr. Freeman to perform his "miracle" cure: the lobotomy. As always, your videos are great. Can't wait to see more.

This episode, as far as its relation to the real history, is rather misleading. The Bowes-Lyon girls weren't members of the Royal Family. The arrangements for them were made by their mother, who was their legal guardian.

@@DeReAntiqua This subject has been looked at a fair bit by historians. One would of course start with the fact that there is no evidence that anybody in the royal family was involved, nor was there any real reason why they would be. There's also circumstantial evidence that the Queen Mother only learned the children were still alive in the 1980s. Among other things. Moreover, some of what I said isn't opinion, it is fact: the sisters were not members of the royal family, anymore than Pippa Middleton's hypothetical children will be.

@@ColonelGreen I think that the confusion is the definition of the "Royal Family", because as far as I can tell they were still first cousins to the Queen Mother, but aren't direct descendants of anyone in the Royal Family, if I understand it correctly. I'm not really that knowledgeable about the whole thing, I have enough difficulty keeping our own monarchy straight here in the Netherlands 😅

Okay this was extremely educational, especially regarding the heritability of mental illness. And kind of a relief. Depression makes you think there's something wrong with you, but it's not that there's something wrong with people with depression--we just got unlucky!

I know this was just a brief mention, but my mother is an alcoholic, 6 years sober in March, and you said with how much the royal in the show drinks she shouldn't stop cold turkey...well my mom did precisely that. She went from never being anywhere in the house without a can of beer in hand, and drank at least a 6 pack of 20oz Keystones a day and then quit completely cold. Not a single drop from one day into the next and oh boy did that SUCK for her and everyone around her. She had terrible tremors for months before they finally subsided, and the first couple weeks were utterly miserable for her while her body was forcibly adjusting to going from so much alcohol to none so fast. But she stuck to it and got through it, and I'm really proud of her for getting out of the worst of it alive.

Don't you think a lot of this "childlikeness" is due to a lack of chances to develop? Because people who seem different get excluded from social interactions and opportunities to learn things.

Its partly the culture that all of society had 80 years ago, its not like The Queen and the Queen Mother were just being mean for the sake of being mean. They only had a small amount of influence over what society was like. My mother had an older brother (born in 1909) who was in an institution for most of his life, and my Dad did not even know about this brother-in-law until several years after he married my Mom (in 1948). We were just a bunch of ordinary farmers in Canada, and it was a secret.

I don't tend to work with people with learning differences, but I work primarily with people with dementia, and the same theme seems to emerge; anyone that can't defend themself is fair game to treat like a second class citizen. What matters is being happy, healthy, and as independent as possible. Just treat people with the respect they deserve and these three things will take care of themselves.

Some late context for North American viewers: What we call learning disabilities in the USA and Canada are called learning difficulties in the UK. So, in the United Kingdom learning disability refers to what North Americans generally understand as intellectual disabilities. While in the United States and Canada, the terms learning disability and learning disorder (LD) refers to a range of disorders that affect an individual’s ability to learn like Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, etc. Also some North Americans will be more familiar with the NJCLD definition of learning disability which is describe as “a discrepancy between a person’s apparent capacity to learn and their level of achievement”. Which definition someone is more familiar with likely depends on several factors like when they where diagnosed or first introduced to the concept and possibly what school district they were in. The different definitions between the UK and the USA/Canada can be a source of confusion when people aren’t aware of that they are different. I’m sure anyone who watched the whole video would pick up on that is a difference but I wanted to give some context just incase there was any confusion.

I believe everyone should know people with autism and downsyndrome and have them around frequently in your life. Not only does it give you patience, awareness and understanding but I believe it greatly enriches your life. I know a few people with autism who are fairly functional but still need additional help and I know a young woman who has downsyndrome who's also pretty functional (and has a very active social media presence). I also had a great aunt with some mental difficulties due to lack of oxygen when she was born but I always tried to talk to her and make conversation. I very much look forward to seeing them because they give me such warmth and joy and are absolute pleasures to hang out with. They can always make a day seem sunnier and happier. I actively take interest in their interests such as love of Star Wars and I love to hear them talk excitedly about things. My life is better with them in it.

The sad thing is that this episode did not focus on the hereditary mental illness the royal family DID have: porphyria. King George III suffered from it, but various of his descendants had it too. Queen Victoria, his granddaughter, was aware of it. Her granddaughter Charlotte and Charlotte's daughter Feodora had it, as did Queen Elizabeth II's first cousin. It was fairly rare and tended to skip several generations.

The cousins were indeed locked up, but it had NOTHING to do with keeping the bloodline pure, or people fearing that Queen Elizabeth and her family would inherit it. That fear would have been ridiculous because Katherine and Nerissa inherited their condition from their mother's family. The mental illness of Idonea, Etheldrada and Rosemary, their first cousins, proved that it had nothing to do with the Bowes-Lyons. This was also understood at the time. Anyone who can read a family tree can understand that. And Princess Margaret was no psychologist, but even she would have understood the difference between depression and learning disabilities.

1:30 - I'm Canadian and in my 60s and I NEVER heard the expression "a friend of Dorothy". It must be a British thing. It's SAD that people producing TV and movies NEED to emphasize the way mentally handicapped people appear as FREAKS! I have a severely affected Fragile-X Syndrome 38 year old and he does NOT look like a freak! He has a developmental age of 2 or 3. The children of the parents in our parent support group ALL look normal! They don't ACT normally, but they DON'T look like freaks. It's REALLY offensive to see that even in today's world, the ignorance of mentally handicapped people is so widespread and shows like this DON'T help to convey the truth! The good thing we've found with our son is that since the age of 35 he has improved tremendously! We don't know why it started at age 35. Since his 37th birthday he hasn't worn diapers to bed and has remained mostly dry ever since! That is a HUGE weight removed from our shoulders!!! However, he still can't take care of his personal needs and that's something we will most likely need to do for as long as he lives with us. Since around 2 or 3 years he's been more proactive in the shower, wanting to lather himself, which is quite an improvement! And since his 35th birthday he's very willing to help out with various extremely simple duties in the house. But overall we are quite pleased with his progress and it's encouraging us as we get older and older!

Keep remember even though what the Queen Mother did with the sisters is wrong, but in those era (40-ish and below), she has no other choice as she said it. Rather than killed them (or someone killed them), they/she rather fake their dead and put it somewhere else "safe", personally if I'm in those era and I'm on those position, I will do the same. I know it's wrong but remember that happened in the 40-ish and below era. Remember awareness is not yet to be "there" and to be spread, just take a look in the US, there's a circus for the "freak" (I forgot the name). We cannot make our mind same with in those era, that's why we're evolved and learn from the past. This is the same things happened with Princess Alice. Heck if that happened in before century or so, the sisters might be not survived because "it's unknown disease". Sorry for my bad English. That's just my opinion and my assumption.

It shows one of the biggest flaws of royals overall. Show only strength, don't show weakness and showing emotions is equal to showing weakness. For the royals there is one good reason to this: To show strength as a nation towards other nations. You have to keep in mind, if you are in that place you are first and foremost the face and backbone of a nation, to show weakness outwards can literally make or break you if there is war with another country or if there are economic battles waged with another country. Then after a long distant between you are again a human being. It's the same with you making yourself into an idol. Sadly there are some people in this modern day which are also living by this nonsense and wonder why everything falls apart or why they are feeling hollow, dead or void inside. No wonder, if you make yourself into an object and crave the basic needs of a human being at the end of the day... From the humanitarian aspect it's just horrible. I mean, if you have the money... you can literally open up a place solely for your relatives and take in the workforce to care for said relatives without tossing them into a dreary place with no connection to the outside world and from the rest of the family. Feeling ashamed of natural things and then don't want to face it... and blocking from your own personal growth as a human being. This got me in my feels.
