Andy Sabisch is well known in the metal detecting community for authoring numerous handbooks for several metal detectors to include the Minelab CTX 3030, Minelab Quattro and Safai, Minelab Equinox, XP Deus, and more. Each handbook is designed help owners understand and get the most out of their metal detectors. I saw his coin program for the Equinox and I decided to give it a try to see if it really works. I'll be honest, I was very skeptical going into my 3 days worth of testing. But how did his Equinox Coin Program measure up? Watch and see.
If you want to see how I set the coin program, skip ahead to the 10:00 to see how i did it. I made some slight tweaks to suit my ground conditions. If you want the written version (in-depth details on setting it up) go to my blog post: mentalmetaldet... I walk through setting up the tone breaks, target tones, etc. with screen shots of everything. EASY!

Hey Scott - thanks for the video, and I agree that Sabisch's book is a great resource. A coin-shooting option I like to use to discriminate out particular VDIs - and I hunt almost exclusively in 5 tones - is to decrease the volume to zero in certain tone breaks but keep the detector in all metal mode. So, my tone breaks are very similar to Sabisch's, as follows: -9 to 10: Volume 0 11 to 14: Volume 25 15 to 18: Volume 0 19 to 23: Volume 25 24 to 40: Volume 25 With very few exceptions when detecting in areas that are well-watered and/or with high foot traffic, not surprisingly, anything old is deep, so even an older memorial or wheat penny will bump up and down between roughly 24 to 30. So once I've dug a few coins at the start of my hunt and determined that the 19 to 23 range are modern day coins, I will set 19 to 23 to zero as well. When I detect at old homesteads or on hard-packed ground, I will listen to all tones, as I've found Indian Head pennies at or just below the surface. I like this method of discrimination because I can still see what the detector is picking up, but I don't have the audio overload. It's the visual equivalent to what threshold does for an audible signal that's been discriminated out. I've only had my 800 for 6 months or so, so I'm learning every day. If you or others in this thread that have thoughts to possible downsides to this method, I'd love to hear it.

Nic, I've used many detectors in my time and I never wanted an Equinox for the longest time. I didn't like the look of it or the feel of it. Then I used one and took it over to a permission I had hammered for years. This video is one of those permissions. It is IMO the best detector out there. I would stick with the 800 and use the headphones. You will hear so much more of whats under the coil. Plus the headphones have noise canceling which makes them awesome. You will hear those quiet whispers that are DEEP. If you don't believe me, give Keith Leppert a call 814-215-1732. He will give more details on the machine. He will also give you a great deal and might beat what you see for a price. Tell him I sent you over.

I also bought a Equinox 800 two years ago and it's the best machine I've ever used. I'm finding civil war bullets that my AT Pro didn't even know was there. You can find deep targets without headphones but you will loose a lot of targets due to road noise, play ground noise or dogs barking. I will never detect without headphones! You can beat the $899.00 price that they're listed for!

Greetings from UK, i have just bought the coiltek 10 x 5 for my Nox 800 and I`m really struggling with it.. ( 9 months of pretty much continual use with the 15 inch coil) The Coiltek 10 x 5 seems to beep and squeak and pop virtually all the time... Watching you, it seems to do the same. I too dont dig unless the signal is repeatable (9, 10 here in UK is always foil) I find that when i get a good signal, dig the plug, go over it and no signal, i go over the hole, again no signal. I turn over the plug and , hey presto, a signal so is there a depth problem?. Also pinpointing seems to be way off. Is it the centre of the coil or the tip? i have copied your settings into my Nox and will try it out asap

Hey 👋 I have another question. I’ve been learning my new equinox 800 and becoming more familiar with the settings it has to offer. I was trying to set multiple user profiles on my detector but it only allows me to set one. On the box it says you can set up to 8. (I made a coin shooting setup in park 1 mode, then when I tried to make a field setup in field 2 the park user profile went away and the detector sets my user profile to the field one) are you able to set multiple user profiles? Any help would be much appreciated!! There’s are no videos on KZfaq on how to set multiple user profiles, nor does the manual explain how to.

@@MentalMetal thanks. One thing I do know in setting step similarities are like the recovery speed and iron bias. On the 800 there's like 8 speeds correct? On 600 is 3. What I have learned is each speed on 600 is equivalent to 2 speeds on the 800. Yet the 800 has a little more zip on the top end than the 600. Iron bias numbers are same situation. With the 800 doing better on the top end. Only thing the 600 cant do is all the tone breaks and sound adjustments and other tweaks like the 800. Thanks for at least considering a look into it. I wished now I got the 800. But I done well on finds and still learning
@MentalMetal
@MentalMetal 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the 800 goes up to 8 on the recovery speed. Don't sweat the 600 vs 800. I think you can do just as good with it. Up until now, I was only hunting in Park 1 using the defaults and found more that I ever have with any other machine. If you like to tinker with settings etc. sure the 800 might have been a better option but I think you can find the same targets regardless of whether you got the 600 or 800.

I do plain to do beach as well but may use cheaper machine for that then get nox later on when theres deals on 15inch coil for the nox would you ever use the 6inch coil or not really worth it if you have a deus coil have is 11inch x35 --- Have you ever tried a ctx3030 as was interested in deep deep machine to go over pasutre land as well which deus may have missed stuff or get 15inch and nox and try out multi mode. ctx3030 come up used so sometimes close to a nox new price so looking at which would be best if you have deus already. beach and more depth on land was one thing been looking into. or get a vanquish which is cheaper and may as well just do as good for beach stuff
@MentalMetal
@MentalMetal 3 жыл бұрын
Phew a lot of questions and I'll do my best to answer them. I do have the Deus but I do not own the X35 coil I have the older stock 11" but I purchased the 9" HF coil and really like it. Just wish it was bigger. Would I ever use the 6" coil for the Nox? Yes, I have a couple of sites where it would be interesting to see what it would do. However, with standard 11" coil on the Nox, you can adjust the recovery speed which will get you most of what you need. I think the 6" will help in conjunction with the recovery speed options. I have never used a CTX 3030. The 15 inch coil for the Nox will get you some more depth but it is more for coverage area. Right now, if I was in your shoes and I wanted a machine that will work well on the beach and exceptionally well on land, I would go for a Nox. Its waterproof whereas the Vanquish isn't. I've used the Deus on the beach and can find targets but I also took the Nox to the same beach last year and found 6 rings in 4 days. I only ever found 3 rings in 6 years going to the same beach using the Deus. The Nox is a beast on the beach. My Deus is now the machine I use when I need to pack lite or hunt in areas where there is a lot of iron (old house sites etc.) Its a better relic machine than the Nox in my opinion which is why I'll never get rid of it.

If my brain is working up to par then this program isnt going to do much more than make a mans ear understand and hear a good tone from a bad on coin range vdi's. basically giving all coin vdi ranges a higher tone and all non coin vdi numbers lower volume and pitch and muting the tone and the volume on bad or iffy ones basically. This Equinox basically adjust and sets up like many other machines I had in the past. Just new menu to learn and sounds to get familiar with and new vdi ranges to memorize. Funny thing happens when you stack 3 half dollars together, the machine stops singing. I stack 2 and it picks it up in the 40 id. What gives?

no clue but then again thats not typically how you would find coins especially 3 half dollars LOL. Thats an interesting test though. Sorry I wish I had more to say on that.

Same here I've had the 18 19 20. My barber dime rang up 21 22. I've noticed changing settings messes with vdi on target's.

Remember this program is for the 800 in Park 1. I don't own a 600 to give it a good test to see what you can and can't change without some of the advanced options. Also park 2 will be different as the algorithm reacts more favorably for larger targets like jewelry where as park 1 is better for the small high conductive targets.

Well to be honest, you wouldn't be using that program until you have about 100 hours on the machine. It is a very easy machine to use out of the box.
