In some cases, firewalls can be subverted. The Community College I went to in 2006 had outbound traffic to port 22 blocked, so one could not connect to a remote SSH Server. I changed my SSH server to run on port 80, and got a message saying it wouldn't do secure traffic on port 80. So I changed the SSH port again to 443, and... outbound firewall subverted. Of course, I can't really recommend doing this; exposing your SSH to the general internet is usually a VERY BAD idea. But it did what I needed it to do, which was move files from my home computer to whatever school computer I was on at that time.

Fun Fact! The term “firewall” comes from aviation and automobiles - the firewall sits between the driver/pilot and the engine, and is meant to prevent an engine fire from immediately entering the cab/cockpit.

Firewalls are not needed on the majority of operating systems largely because at edge of most networks their is already a firewall. Most home users operate behind a NAT firewall of some description.

generally even on Linux, i use Linux's Firewall "Gufw" and set up ports: 53 in 443 in 80 in/out 8080 in/out if you use Tor you might need 9001 and an other in the 9000 range (i am booted in windows right now so those are the only ones i can "remember" on the top of my head. i think it was 9143 but don't trust that, just google them.) but the list on top should let you browse most sites. if you play games then best look up the ports or turn it off temporarily.

The ¨firewall" should be renamed to something more specific imo, mostly because of confusied/mislead users and often don't know the different types of firewall and their usage you just mentionned.

My IT guys at my school are adamant that people are using VPNs at my school. A bunch of the kids who have been called out for using VPNs aren't even sure what a VPN is and I've check a couple of their computers and they definitely don't have any VPN or proxy services. Would they be seeing that they're going through the 443 tcp port?

@@roborobo8370 That depends on what you want, but 1) FLAC is lossless. It stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, after all. 2) Going after the supposed filename, it is an airhorn sound effect. That means, it can endure compression well. 3) Lossless audio takes an insane amount of storage space. This is not good for anyone, not the internet connections who get blown away with traffic, nor the users who get huge files on their computers. 4) Finally, I would like to see you ABX 160k Opus vs WAV.

The bit at 6:30 about linux distros not opening ports that listen and respond to requests by default seems at least mostly correct for desktop systems. One wrinkle is that if you're using Gnome, gjs might open a port. I'm not sure that could be used to pwn a Gnome box, but if you're paranoid, then you might decide you don't want Gnome opening that port. packets from the internet hit your router first (unless you have a separate modem) The firewall is built into most routers so before the router routes packets to the machines on the network the built in firewall filters them out first.
