Oh my goodness! I never knew hand•book was a local company! My city always surprises me ❤. I'll definitely have to pick up their sketchbook now & it's great knowing my city produces a favorite amongst YT watercolorists.

OMG, that's so funny, I just picked up a 4"x6" block of that paper last weekend because it was nearly as cheap as cellulose watercolor postcards. I am not crazy about the 2 edges bound block. I didn't care for their cellulose paper (I used up an entire block hoping I would learn to like it) but I really like their hot press cotton watercolor paper so I thought I'd give the cold pressed a cotton a try. I never knew Fluid was by the handbook paper company, I have one of their panoramic sketchbooks and It's not bad:) Enjoy your wedding!

It’s kind of crazy how inexpensive it is, right?!?! I don’t mind the two-edge thing, but I really wish they would chill out with the glue thickness. Pretty sure the paper isn’t going to spontaneously separate if there’s like half as much on there, guys! When I realized that handbook/fluid/global arts materials were all one company, it kinda floored me. Especially because the papers made under these names are all so different! The panoramic sketchbook is the one that I love the most, though-something about the paper itself combined with the unusual dimensions? Total winner.

@@MeowMeowKapow - Even though they're all under one company, I'm guessing that the different products/ papers/ handbooks are made in different factories...for now. At least until a bean counter starts trying to cut corners (production costs) to make his job relevant. 😑 They think the consumer is too stupid to notice because they themselves Very Rarely use the product(s), so they don't care what the quality is. 😡

Thank youuuuu! =^.^= this particular paper reminds me a lot of the bee paper, which I know you’re also not a super big fan of, so it totally makes sense. I’m reeeeeeeeeeally hoping those travelogues don’t change. I have a square one that’s got the speedball branding, but not a square one without to compare it against. Tried to get a new panoramic like I already use, and it still has the old branding! (Which I’m actually kind of grateful for Since now I’ve got a spare.)

Think you did an excellent job of talking about this paper. I like the Fluid 100 for doing small works I may want to turn into larger works. Also, it should work fine for gouache, too. Think paper surface is a bit less crucial for gouache. It can also work for watercolor pencils, I think.

That’s totally cool, though! They’re VERY different papers, so it makes sense each of us would prefer one over the other. Also, is your handbook journal one of the speedball ones, or one of the originals? Wondering if there are differences with the takeover is all!

@@MeowMeowKapow I think it's one of the originals! I'll have to double let check. I used to love love love the sketchbook but over time since I tend to use so much water with my work, I'm finding I have an easier time with really heavy papers. I've even considered buying the fluid100 300lb (300gsm? I'm so tired...) and turning it into a sketchbook!

From personal experience the sheets are easier to take out of the block when you use a bone folder (slide it underneath the paper and along the glued edge) instead of an xacto knife. Like it takes me ten seconds or less to get a sheet out without an ounce of damage but when I've tried using anything sharp it can ruin the edge of the sheet if I'm impatient and just takes forever. .(Not sure if this applies to other watercolour blocks though)
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 5 жыл бұрын
I usually use a plastic palette knife or my bone folder to remove, but the blocking on this particular line is SOOOOOOOOO thick. If my wrists are all jacked up that day, I kind of have no choice but to use a knife to get it separated because the physical stress ends up being too much.

Gleeeee!! I love love love my Hand•Book journals! Had no idea they were made by the same company. Strange that things have changed! I admit, though, I've never been a fan of cotton watercolor paper, but that may be due to lack of using good quality paper. Like cheap tequila, once you gag on it, you never want to try it again - even the good stuff. lol! Love the painting and as always, such a great narrative on this thirsty paper! (Good in a "Goldie Locks kind of way" LMAO!!). :)
@MeowMeowKapow

I’ve had mixed experiences with cotton watercolor papers, and I’d say that I probably prefer cellulose ones on because I’m a cheap ho and they’re what I’ve got the most practice with! Maybe cotton is better, I don’t know, but I usually feel a bit lost at first when using cotton papers because they just don’t perform the way I’m used to with my cellulose. I’ve never had it, but maybe the tequila theory is right! Seems like some pretty sound logic to me. And it’s totally weird that hand•book/global arts materials/speedball/whoever else are all linked, right?!?! I really wonder how much overlap there is, and if there are any changes down the pipe from the Speedball element. Hopefully, only for the better!
@MDCampbell

@@MeowMeowKapow yeah, I'm not a drinker, much (rare occasions, at best), but I work as a bartender at restaurants when I was young and definitely did my share of getting to know the products. (hiccup!) As for the Hand•Book conundrum, I suspect that was the Global Arts plan - to create a product base that would be attractive to a larger parent company (the way the Newell Company aquired Sanford, who aquired both Sharpie and Prismacolor). If they pitched their Hand•Books to Speedball or Moleskin, one of them might likely bite - and perhaps Speedball did! Moleskin owns the market in the US, while Leuchtturm1917 is huge in Europe/Germany. Hopefully, the result will be simply that our beloved Hand•Books will still be manufactured by Global Arts, under the distribution of Speedball, to reach a larger market. Again, I hope. My fear would be a decline in quality due to pressure to reduce costs. Anyway, I'm totally rambling. Stranger Things is on and I need to catch up! lol! Stay well my friend! I hope you're feeling great! :)

This paper is just Ok. Beware though the glue on the blocks is much stronger than the paper and you run the risk of ripping it when you remove a sheet .this also goes for the 300 lb version which also rips alarmingly easily.
