Very easy DIY for a complete and easy coolant flush for your vechicle.
1.Disconnect the return hose from the expansion tank
2.Take another hose;connect it and guide it to a
container-min15l
3.Prepare cca 15l of distilled water and some
antifreeze
4.Start the vechicle and by no means let the
expansion tank get empty as it will result in air
getting inside your system!
5. Run the water trough the system until clean water starts
coming out
6. start adding antifreeze until your preferred mixture is
Reached
7. Put the hose back into the expansion tank;close the cap
8. Go for a test drive with heat on high
9. Check level and mixture again
Remember to carefully follow the instructions. If air does get in the system things can go south pretty quickly if you dont know what you are doing.

Thank you for posting this video. I personally think this is brilliant and will be doing this today. I knew there had to be a clever way to do this and avoid making a big mess on the vehicle and possibly the ground. I also intend to filter and reuse the coolant as it is not very old. Much thanks again for making and posting this.

Thank you for your kind feedback! It's little shortcuts like this that make a mechanics life a lot easier. May I ask since you're planning on reusing and filtering the old coolant; why bother flushing the whole system in the first place?

@@BernardBerdon I will be replacing a water pump which has gone bad. I will filter the "old coolant" for contaminating particulate from the water pump. I hate to sound cheap, I never really am, but the coolant is only 18 months old and has maybe 7000 miles on it and looks perfect, so maybe I am wrong to reuse it? I don't want to be "penny wise and pound foolish", but I also don't wish to throw money away. What do you think?

@@istvanmeissler2238 If you plan on replacing the water pump most of the coolant will spill out anyway. I will also point out that my method in the video works only if you simultaneously ADD the exact amount that is going out of the system so that it never ever runs dry and the expansion tank is always full(That is futile as you are replacing your water pump). Now if you plan to just disconnect the return hose run the truck and "bleed" the system that way you are going to have a very bad day as there are going to be pockets of air while the engine is running so it will overheat + you will destroy the thermostat and water pump and god knows what else. Best way to replace the water pump: 1.Under the radiator on the passenger side there is a valve that you open and let the coolant flow in a clean bucket(if you want to reuse it). 2.Oped the expansion tank so that you drain most of the fluid 3.Remove and replace the water pump + thermostat(while you are going trough all this trouble might ass well do it) 4.When everything is installed and closed tight start adding coolant until the expansion tank is full and doesn't absorb anymore coolant into the system. 5.Turn the ignition key to position 2( there is an auxiliary electrical water pump that will circulate the coolant and get rid of air pockets). 6. While ignition in position 2 add coolant to expansion tank. 7. Start the truck and add more coolant if needed. 8. Keep the heat on high. 9. Go for a test drive and monitor the temperature gauge. As for the old coolant. If its really clean like new and you are extremely thorough that you don't contaminate it; I see no real problem. However you cannot and will not make a mistake by changing out any fluid in the truck with a brand new quality one (whether it be engine oil, transmission fluid, differential fluid, transfer box fluid,..). There is no such thing as changing any fluid to often; only too rarely. I work at a specialist Mercedes-Benz Workshop so I have access to every kind of information on servicing and maintaining those vehicles trough WIS/ASRA +EPC EWA. + I can get you real oem parts or equivalent aftermarket quality ones at dirt cheap prices. Feel free to ask me any questions. Have a great day!

Hi Bernard, One question, should the hot air be on full blast throughout this entire process in order to flush the heater core too, correct?

Thanks for the great video. What is the diameter of the exteneded hose?
@BernardBerdon
@BernardBerdon Жыл бұрын
I am very glad this video helped you out. Well I dont have the exact measurement for the hose... But any size just to fit it snug over the one on the vehicle and clamp it down lightly. It doesnt have any real pressure so you just basically have to "funnel" it down in the bucket somehow.

@@BernardBerdon Thanks again, actually I can measure outside diameter of the return hose and choose the hose from there. There is no such simple and effective tutorial of changing coolant on youtube. I wish you could do more such videos.

@@Ravenola Well I just might do it. Since I did the video(was very young and inexperienced) I became a certified MB technician and am currently MB workshop manager( huuraaay - it means much less time for diy videos).. But yes I do have a lot of tips and tricks up my sleeve so some new videos are in order. Stay tuned and have a good one!

while connecting the return hose back to expansion tank , should i stop the engine or should just connect while engine is still working ? 1:52

You can do it either way; just be quick so you dont loose too much coolant in the expansion tank. Best option is to turn off the engine.

@@yoodledooter94 No if you disconnected the drivers side hose there shoudnt be any pressure there (except maybe the engine being very hot). So it shouldnt do that when mild warm or cold. Keep me posted😁
