Mercedes Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement DIY for Mercedes-Benz vehicles including W211 E320 and E500. Also applies to other Mercedes with M112, M113 and M113k engines including ML320, ML500, S500, SL500, C280 and AMG C55, E55, and more.
This is a common source of no crank or no start on Mercedes cars and SUVs with these engines. We are replacing the part as preventative maintenance.
There is plenty of information on the Internet about this repair, we put together this video to show you the tips and tricks that are going to make it a breeze to complete.
It's tough to fit a camera, light and wrench in this location, so we've captured videos of each step to guide you.

We must have tempted fate with this one!! Last week we had the crankshaft position sensor error code P0335. This was our wagon and it was sitting in the sun, the first really warm day of the year. No issues starting when we got in. Then, when we got home and attempted to start again to leave, we got the no crank issue. Checked later and pulled this code. Bear in mind, we had already replaced the sensor in our S211 wagon about 50k miles ago with genuine Bosch. The video shows us replacing on our W211 sedan. Thankfully we kept the sensor we replaced in the video as a backup and put it in the wagon last week to keep it going for a few days until the new replacement arrived. Lesson learned, this should be part of preventative maintenance every 40k-50k!!

I have a 2001 SLK 320 and, although not identical in layout, pretty similar. Less room for me for sure to do what I need to do yet, but your video is very helpful. I forgot about dielectric grease! And I have the right tool and socket. My deal is that I have to get the electrical connection to release and there is so so very little room to get my fingers on it the right way to release that I think. But I'll try again after my apt AC stops my sweating from today's very humid rainy hot northern Virginia July weather.

Yes, same engine, much tighter fit in the SLK chassis. For the electrical connector sometimes it helps to hold a flat head screw driver in your hand and use that to push down on the clip. It can get you an extra 1-2 inches in a tight spot. Of course, be careful because that plastic is brittle. It's cooking here too. We just did an oil change last week and started about two hours before sundown so it was a little cooler!

2007 e350 . Swapped once an it fixed it. Motor shut off and only code was p0335 pending. Swapped another crankshaft sensor but didn't fix it this time.

Start by checking the wire and connections at both ends of the sensor wire for any damage or loose connections. It's unlikely but sometimes you get a new part that's bad, it's happened to us before. For your model engine there are other concerns with the camshaft, we suggest doing some research and see if your car is effected by the issue.

Mine is SLK 320, 465 R170,2001 V6.guess it has just 2pin..l have not yet worked on it as am recovering from 3 major surgeries, the gear shift too is stuck..vehicle was just parked for almost 3plus years ! Wonder what could be the issue towards it..fitted new battery but it doesn't crank..hooked scanner and it pointed out crankshaft position sensor!

@fatherandsonfix will do so...the gear stick too has stuck in P position..replaced the brake light switch but didn't work out...since I m still on recovery mode and can't do much to the car...its just parked..just wondering where to start on to the gear stick issue.. I am in Dar es salaam Tanzania, spare parts for this model are tough to locate too.

@@knight6757 the first place to check is the battery, make sure the battery is in good condition and fully charged. you may have already checked this but you'd be surprised how often that's an issue. the location and parts does make it a challenge. if it's not the switch, you have the control unit or the shift mechanism itself. we had to replace the shift mechanism on our w211 after it wouldn't recognize gears. of course, you can use a screw driver to lever it out of park (through the hole in the back of the lever mechanism, there is a safety release) to move the vehicle (push it to another location) if you need to. that's not suggested for driving, only to get into neutral for towing, etc.

@fatherandsonfix thank you for your response, fitted new battery ...no difference, had to insert a screw driver to get in free and moved the vehicle from office premises to home. I will order the crankshaft position sensor soon and will replace it, l may also need to order the shift mechanism...to save time and cost on freight might as well order both at a ago. Is there anyway to check the shift mechanism, when l left the vehicle at the office prior going for my surgeries everything was working fine had left the keys too instructing them to start the vehicle periodically of which it was going done, can the shift mechanism go bonkers just like that..or ?

@@knight6757 sounds like you're taking all the right steps. if you are this deep in diagnosis it would be good to get a copy of the WIS or workshop manual for your model. Then follow the recommended diagnostic flow. WIS also has wire diagrams and more to help you troubleshoot.

Is it possible to have the engine running smoothly despite a bad Crankshaft position sensor? On my CLK the engine is sweet and no ignition faults on diagnostics scanner BUT there's an intermittent problem with cutting out whilst idling and occasionally not engaging ignition when you turn the key. I just thought if the CPS was bad the engine might be misfiring ... any thoughts please?

The engine can run smoothly for the most part and still have a bad CPS. We had no indication from the engine in terms of rough idling when it happened to us recently. If you are troubleshooting rough idle and no start, the CPS replacement is a good first step even if it's not throwing a code. Your symptoms could also be due to an intermittent connection on the ignition circuit, bad coil, etc. We would replace the CPS first, then see if the problem continues and troubleshoot further. Of course we don't recommend throwing parts at issues, but there is correlation here and the part is relatively inexpensive.

Sprinter. So how do you test this part for failure and why can't you have grease on the outside of this sensor? I say this because these things can be almost impossible to remove sometimes due to rust

You can test with a multimeter but it's a little challenging. You would look for the pulsing signals coming out of the sensor. An oscilloscope is more accurate for this test, but not something most people have in their kit. We said no grease so it wouldn't interrupt the sensor or impact it's reading. It's true they get stuck some times. You could use a little anti-sieze on the sides, but that is up to you.

@@fatherandsonfix yes, no one has an oscilloscope and yes I use antiseize. I just got a new crank sensor from FCP Euro and still getting the same symptoms, actually worse. So I had to remove it and put the other one back in. Resistance is 3 times different between the two sensors

@@frontlinemedia4270 sorry to hear that. We're guessing you already checked the line going to the sensor. That would be the next place we would look. Check for a good ground and any obvious damage to the plug or wires. We hope you get it resolved, and keep us posted on how it goes.

Will it make any difference if the tab is in the unlocked position overtop the sensor? My car gives me issues with the code p0335 and it shudders a little going into second gear, and really shudders going uphill. But again, these issues are all intermittent and with various degrees of seriousness. Plus, if I have to accelerate hard, it has twice stalled on me and threw the engine light, which reset the light and issue after I pulled over, turned the car off, let it sit for a bit and turned it back on.

Intermittent and then engine cooling and having it work again are typical for the sensor being bad. If the connection is intermittent, heat could also cause the connection to go in and out. If you haven't replaced the sensor and are experiencing these symptoms, that's the first place to start. If you have replaced the sensor and the tab is not engaging, try some 100% silicone spray lightly to ease the plug on. Hard to tell without seeing whether the tab not being engaged means it is not fully seated, sometimes the plastic tabs get brittle and don't want to reseat fully.

@@fatherandsonfix well, tried fixing it, could not get to the sensor, and I don't have nor could afford to get jack stands to try to come at it from below, or to get a camera to find the sensor and see the work in the tight space. I did of course move around in the area trying to get to it, but didn't really mess with anything. But then, after I put everything back together, the car is now having trouble starting. But like previous symptoms, it seems to improve the more and longer the car runs. But if it sits for awhile, it has trouble cranking. The bad part is that this happened on my last day off this week, and when I didn't have the money to get it fixed. Also, not many around here are skilled or confident working on a European car that isn't a stealership. But at least it's driveable to a European mechanic about an hour away. Also, it's giving an error about the brakes before it turns over fully, which didn't happen yesterday when the trouble cranking started, which disappears and doesn't come back when the car is running. I just wanted to give an update. It always seems like I'm cursed when I try to do a seemingly simple repair to my cars. I always mess something up making the problem worse. So I'm not touching my car anymore. My car also has a problem with the passenger directional headlight being stuck to the right, the driver side passenger floor light isn't working, the rear dome light isn't working, the rear sunshade won't retract. Everything else I can live with except this sensor issue.

​@@fatherandsonfixis this process the same for V8 engines? I have an '04 e500 4matic. I'm having a good mechanic at a dealership do this. They specialize in Fords, but have worked on other cars, just not Mercedes. This seems like a simple for a good mechanic job, and I know the mechanic and owner, they're really good. I can't find any local mechanics who can work on my car quick enough and I need my car.

1999 clk320, changed it 2 times in the last 24 years. First one the car would just randomly stall at stop lights when engine was warm. Second one would just have A No start when engine was warm, But it would start with ether sprayed into the throttle body. No check engine light or any indications.

So sorry to hear that. that is a tough location on your model! first step, try to get a cell phone down there to take a photo. This way you can see the bolt and how bad the head may be stripped. Also, some information on the Internet states your model may have a t27 torx instead of a e8 external torx. The cellphone picture will help you confirm. If it is indeed stripped, spray with penetrating oil, (pblaster or similar) and let soak for at least 30 min, overnight if possible. Then wipe of the bolt head and try to get a small pair of locking pliers (vice grips) to hold what's left of the bolt and slightly turn counter clockwise, trying to free the bolt and not strip the head further. You may need needle nose vice grips. Last measure would be to use a dremel and cut a groove across the bolt so you can use a flat head screw driver the turn the bolt out. not sure if that's even possible with the location on your vehicle. be very careful with that and anything in that area. let us know how it goes!

Yes, the c240 4matic also has the same issue, same family of engines. Symptoms are no start / intermittent start especially with temperature change, more often when it gets hot.

I got a 06 cls 500 and it won’t turn over it only cranks I can hear the fuel pump and start working and all electronics work , could it be this sensor that’s making it not start ?

Similar location, it is on the driver side of the bell housing just bellow heater hose. You may have to reach a little further on your model to get to it.

How did you fix it? A neighbor is selling an 06 E500 with low miles dirt cheap because it wont start, just wants it out of his driveway.. He suspects the crankshaft position sensor. Besides that, car is mint with no codes...
