In hindsight this was an easy diag but poor code descriptions can send you in the wrong directions. Hopefully this will help you navigate through the challenge of finding the correct information on Mercedes service information because sometimes you have to do some digging.

When troubleshooting if a fuse is good or not, you should pull the fuse to see if one of the legs are cut or bent, or if there are signs of corrosion, unless of course by pulling and replacing the fuse you would disrupt your testing, like waking up a vehicle while diagnosing parasitic draw. From a systems standpoint ---- (at least domestic automotive control systems) if you have a fully electronic PRNDL (shift lever position) ---- the TCM ---- (even if it is integrated with the transmission valve body (or close to the valve body) which does make sense if you want to minimize the wire harness length (which has benefits) between the loads (solenoids) and the solenoid amplifier, minimize the number of pins on the transmission housing connector (if the module is internal), and avoid having to package the TCM external to the transmission), ----- should have ownership of the electronic PRNDL. The word "Servo" is an poorly chosen word by the translator or person reading the MB shop manual, the closed loop positional valve control in the transmission they are referring to is the pintle position of a VFS to set line pressure. The VFS pressure is set using switching current control and the output is a measure of the actual pressure (using a analog pressure sensor or pressure switches), so there is a positional closed loop to control pressure, but we do not in the USA traditionally call this a servo system, we would say the line pressure is VFS controlled with no reference to a "positional servo". The reason is if you are testing the transmission by itself on a automatic transmission testing dynamometer (which will happen at the transmission manufacturing plant) you need to have all the required operation I/O present (especially PRNDL) without abstraction through another module to actually test and calibrate the transmission. The control representation can be encoded into a CAN message and monitored by other modules, but the TCM has primary ownership of this real-time control input. So, how things talk is actually a result of the system design requirements for the control function, like a transmission. When we use the term Powertrain for domestic brands we are talking primarily everything in the powertrain, which traditionally means, ECM, TCM, ISM and any other module used to move the vehicle over the road. You can see this on your scan tool under the "Power" Network representation. The high speed real-time data (messages) shared for control is reserved for this bus for powertrain. Any module on the "Power" bus can broadcast information to other modules in the vehicle but this is not considered critical real-time data and has a lower priority. The rear SAM cover must act as a secondary lock to hold in the fuse mini-housings, if the cover is missing can the fuse just vibrate loose?

What a great story. My daughter has this kind of Mercedes and when driving it I accidentally shifted into neutral when trying to activate the window washer. Not a great experience on the M1 freeway. I personally think it's wrong to charge for extra time while learning a new car/ new situation. Think about it: now that you've seen this issue and are more familiar, next time you'll be able to find that same problem very quickly, and the next guy will only be charged for 1 hour. So why should we get rewarded for being less experienced and unfamiliar in this first case? Sometimes you just have to chalk it up as a learning session. That's just my 2 cents. I can understand both sides of the argument with this; and I know it's discussed often. I just wouldn't want to be the customer getting hit for picking the wrong technician who is still learning my car vs someone who works on them every day and has seen it all before. Again, I just don't think it makes sense that we (technicians) get penalized as we get more proficient-- since you can find it faster and only charge 1 hour. vs being rewarded when we struggle for hours. I'm sure in this case, they have money and would be happy to pay it: so maybe that does factor into the decision when charging. It's an interesting discussion, for sure. I know scanner danner says the same as you: "they need to be charged".
@calholli
@calholli Жыл бұрын
@@autodiagyt There's definitely a lot of gray area on this subject. I do see your point on weighing in the customers other options- where you're still doing him a huge favor vs his alternatives. I think the key distinction is that we must make this very clear up front and set expectations correctly. At least make it clear to the customer what he may be walking into. So just saying: "I've worked on these before, they are very complicated cars and it can run up to 4 or 5 hours of diagnostics sometimes from all the research that is required"--- and if they still agree to do it, then I think you're perfectly in the clear, ethically. I built houses and metal buildings for years, and I've found that setting expectations up front is probably the most important thing about any kind of service work. cheers.

The part that’s missing in this conversation is the value to the customer. Regardless of where they took it or who worked on it, they we’re looking for a solution to their problem and they got what they paid for. Any reasonable person would understand that paying for a solution at a reasonable cost is fair if the cost is reasonable. And there is no guarantee that a MB technician would have found that any more quickly and that the service adviser wouldn’t charge accordingly for the value of the job. It is very flawed to think that an MB tech would have been any more competent or, that factory data would have been easier to navigate. It simply is not any more enlightening than aftermarket in some areas and generally gives no more than system description and segmented wiring diagrams. It still requires an experienced tech to understand and decipher and test. The more experienced you are as an independent should equate to a higher rate and charging your time spent is what feeds you and your family. I highly doubt that this is a common issue in a TSB. It is more likely that that fuse was not fitted properly by someone working on it in the past and finding someone else’s mistake is time consuming. So is it the customer or tech that should pay for that? Either way the customer got the result they paid for and are happy.

Mercedes would have just thrown parts at it till it magically started working again, and charge for each diagnosis when the last one didn't fix anything. Dealers are the worst rip off crooks out there. Despite clear and concise instructions given them by the manufacture, they are there to make as much money off each customer possible even at the risk of losing the customer in the future, they are not there to serve their customers in the least.

And MB wiring diagram will name modules as per Xentry. All data by looks of its drawing, that is copy n paste MB original drawing. I can feel ur pain. I got all 3 scanners mentioned and MB WIS , hence i know how difficult it will be if one never seen MB Xentry and MB WIS original wiring diagram and task to do what u are doing now using not a Xentry and misled by wrong modules name/s

@@autodiagyt yes, i love ur channel and always watch to the end. So u finally found the A80 ISM.👍 .When u work on MB cars try to decode the VIN first to get its data card which tells u what are the options on the car and tranny type n serial number. With that data card when using MB OE Front SAM N10/1 or Rear SAM N10/2 wiring diagram which both are 10 pages set so total 20 pages, u can then delete what is not for ur car ...about 50 percent removed. MB has at least 40plus variant of W212 as such their Front n Rear SAM wiring diagram is so cramped to accomodate all those variants and give us the reader a migrain. N15/5 is in use by some AMG version of W212 with special tranny and shifter is at center console. I am just a DIY guy with a right hand drive W212 facelift of 2014 model year E400, M276.820 3 liter turbo engine which is such a pariah model for its MB OE documentation, it is a more nightmare than W212 with common popular V6 M272 n M276 3.5 NA or the V8 M273 n M278 popular in US market. So i feel ur pain indeed when aftermarket scanner database is not accurate. Great diagnostic my man. 2 thumbs up.

@autodiagyt I find the lack of information to be comical at best. Also the same strategy is used by most manufacturers these days as far as the steering column lock goes. My first big job with my current employer was a 2017 Lexus suv and I had to tear down the car to unibody sheet metal from the rear seats forward coz the body shop needed to do structural repairs. Meaning the engine, transmission, all suspension ,subframe ,dash ,dash supports bar, harness and everything in between needed to come out, I am very picky about running the harness exactly where it goes and while doing the steering column part I put the connector for the column lock in the lock but didn't click it in. I had to diag the problem I caused and it was a lil difficult and I only figured it out when I was getting out of the car and noticed the steering wheel didn't lock lol. When it didn't start the first time I was like f#%k what did I do🤣 that's a lot of work ya'll
