With Jaguar, Audi and the upstart newcomer Tesla all having electric SUVs, Mercedes didn’t want to get left out. So rather than start from scratch and build an electric car using a clean sheet like those rivals, Mercedes decided to convert one of its existing cars to use an all-electric powertrain.
In this case, it used its GLC - a mid-sized SUV - as the base. The engine was been replaced by two electric motors, one each for the front and rear wheels. An 80kWh battery has been squeezed under the floor and then the styling has been tweaked to make it look a little more special than the ‘normal’ GLC. The most noticeable change is the smoother grille and full-width LED lamps across the bonnet and bootlid.
But what is the EQC like to drive and if you're in the market for an all-electric SUV should you be considering one? Nicki Shields finds out.

TeslaBjörn has tested the range on several EV's and the EQC beats both the i-Pace and the e-tron on range. The e-tron charges much faster though...

Nice review, but just because the battery is smaller (80kw) vs competition doesn't necessarily translate to less miles. Maybe check Bjorn Nyland range test.

Great review, with a real world perspective! I compared it with a GLC 43 amg a year ago and chose the EQC as it was feeling more powerful to drive and actually much cheaper to run and to buy! Very happy so far and range has never been an issue (though I live in a small country).

Mi ioniq does 200 real world and has a 38kwh battery. So this isn't really an efficient car

Dead right. We need to start talking about miles per kwh, I've had a Leaf that did 4.5, and a BMW 330e that did 2.5. It makes a huge difference.

Yeah, you are right, my wifes renault Clio consumes way less than my previous BMW X3.

You can't just simply compare different segments of car, just like you wouldn't compare the fuel consumption if they were both ICE vehicles.

This isn't a Tesla Model X competitor. EQC is literally the same length as the Tesla Model Y. Model X is a class larger. Hopefully the Model Y lands in Europe next year so we can get some better comparisons :)

A model Y is like a Peugeot 5008 to a GLC or X3 (similar to EQC), same segment, different class!

Fully agree. They / she gets that wrong also like many other things. Model X is a good chunk bigger than this Frankenstein BEV.

@@philipclaeys6920 Yeah, maybe ;-) At least it has a frunk, storage underneath the usual trunk and a flat floor. Otherwise the EQC is less noisy and has a more classic interior. But what else?

I do enjoy your reviews - informal but thorough and never gimmicky. I can see why you liked this Mercedes, but I've no regrets at having a Kia E-Niro on order. About half the price of the Mercedes, very little slower, and a realistic range of 250+ miles.

As if range matters for daily use, I can charge at home and i have always to much range available for my daily use; for business I have trips of 400 to 500 km on a day, I never came in a situation I could not charge somewhere along the road. Ok, I live in Benelux and those trips are in Netherlands and I have more than 100 locations with fastchargers (150 kW plus). A Niron is great, but as a business car ... Mercedes is better.

depreciation is high on this considering the range of purpose built EV's coming in 2021 makes this a poor buy added to all the other issues around range efficency and value. Mercedes themselves will be pushing there purpose built EQA range which should meet range efficency, performance and value

U got no idea what you are talking about. Tesla Bjorn tested it going farther than the ipace and etron, when speaking about charging it feels like this is the first time you talk about such things. Painful.

I think that electric SUVs make even less sense given that the batteries need to push more weight given the current limitations of their energy density. It makes more sense to build an electric sedan or a e-hatchback as it has more surface for a larger and longer battery while keeping interior space fine while moving less weight.

A friend of me drives an X75D and I drive an EQC, we did together a roadtrip and what you say is definitively not correct! And compared with an version with 100 kWh battery, i doubt if the consumption of the X is lower ... how much is it according to your experience?

i dont care how smart these cars look, if they are not on a purpose built EV chassis, they cannot be cutting edge technology and will inherently be less efficient, both in space utlization and handling characteristics

You know when you see awful drivers (often in this type of vehicle) drive flat out up to a junction then slam on the brakes. Anyone ever tried being on a zebra crossing when this happens and you wonder if you're about to be killed? Regen braking actively encourages AWFUL driving behaviours which frightens vulnerable road users. Should be banned.

£83,000 in Au. Just another ego flex for wealthy soccer mums to feel good about themselves. At 2.5 tonnes it is not efficient, just because its an EV doesn't mean it's not wasting energy. Energy that here in Au came from a coal fired power station. This is just transferring the face value guilt.
