Step by step how to replace the front anti-roll bar (ARB) / sway bar / stabilizer bar bushes on Mercedes C-class W203 and CLK C209 and E class W211 cars. Powerflex replacement bushes were used, as new bushes not available from Mercedes due to the original bushes having been moulded to the bar!
The process is the same for the newer C class W204 and E class W212 nut the replacement bushes are difficult to find and not available from most aftermarket suppliers yet. On company that does seem to stock them is siberianbushing.com/ but I haven't used any of their products yet and so can't vouch for them.

An aftermarket bush is required and I recommend Powerflex. I'm not affiliated to them in any way but the kit was good quality and worked! BUT make sure you MEASURE your anti roll bar and select the correct size for your car!
Mercedes Powerflex front anit-roll bar bushes (for 22mm bar). part number: Powerflex part number: PFF40-503-22. They cost about £40 for a pair, which is a lot cheaper than replacing with a new anti-roll bar (with new bushes moulded onto it). These bushes will also last much longer.

@Gregory Pappas There's quite a few things this can be But here are the most likely culprits: #1 Old tyres, if they are older than 5yrs old then they become noticeably harder and with less grip. #2 Tired rear shocks - Hard to diagnose because the springs are so stiff, it is hard to do the "bounce check" #3 Worn rear suspension bushes, again hard to diagnose unless you are very experienced but an experienced car garage should be able to check this for you. Just for reference, my car is a 2007 / 2008 320cdi and at about 100k miles, I changed all rear suspension arms and rear shocks and it transformed the car. They should have been changed sooner tbh. Hope that helps! Phil

while long summer days are around you should take a hard look at the sway bar tie-ends and the control arms bushings all of which are reliably designed to gently let go and mess up your front end controls. Other hidden design bugs are the failed PCV VALVE that help spring engine oil leaks (oil/coolant heat exchanger gasket!) as well as failed serpentine TENSIONER (peged in place) and plastic idler PULLEYS. All these perfectly designed failure points are Benz staple repairs not to mention the buggy peripheral modules (infamous Rear SAM) on the ODB2 CAN Network. 👍

HI, just looking on Powerflex USA for your car www.powerflexusa.com/shop/category/mercedes-benz-c-class-c-class-w203-2001-2007-1860 (I assume you are in the states because we didn't get the exact same model as yours in the UK) and there are a few different front sway bar bushes that it could be. I think what would be best is for you to drop down the sway bar and have a look at the bush and compare it to the shape of the ones on Powerflex (there are two different shapes by the look of it). Then measure the bar thickness (as shown in the vid at 1:45 in the video) and that should lead you to the correct bush. Hope that helps! Cheers, Phil

Hi, Yes, unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that your car will have a sway bar with the bushes molded directly onto it. As you say, not all bushes are available aftermarket for Mercedes cars, so you may be a little stuck. Here is the parts catalogue I use. It is listing a part number for a sway bar for your car but not the bushes separately. 😞 nemigaparts.com/cat_spares/epc/mercedes/1/fg/204055/61t/32/060/ Thanks, Phil

There’s a pretty good chance that they will be! But if you have a set of callipers, you are probably best to measure to be 100% sure. You can measure on any straight section of the bar and can reach in easily without jacking up just by parking with two wheels up on the kerb. My car has the AMG pack, not sure if that means a larger anti roll bar or not… thanks, Phil

Did you notice any improvements on going from rubber to polyurethane bushes (at least in “spirited driving” I guess)?
@ReviveMyRide
@ReviveMyRide 3 жыл бұрын
The poly bushes on the front ARB definitely improved the body roll and as a result the steering felt sharper. However, I was going from old, worn rubber bushes to new poly., so I may have seen a similar improvement just by fitting new bushes (even if they were rubber but that would only be possible if you bought a new front bar at the same time). I think to get a real difference in handling on the front end, then there are also other front suspension bushes that you would need to do but apparently there is a trade off against comfort in normal driving. Hope that helps! Thanks, Phil

Hi Anthony, I can confirm that the bushes have been fine, with no squeaking so far (fitted 9 months ago). Quite an easy job, I was the same as you, didn't feel the need to replace the whole bar as it still looked in really good condition. Just make sure you put plenty of the grease supplied and out it on the inside of the bush (as per the video). Cheers, RMR

Hi, no I just removed the 4 long bolts (2 bolts on each of the 2 brackets that hold the ARB bushes against the body of the car), as can be seen at 2:00 in the video. The bar should then only be held up at each end by the two small tie bars (which is item 50 in the diagram you can see at 0:29 in the video) and just move down easily pretty much under its own weight. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions and I will help if I can! Cheers, Phil

@ReviveMyRide
@ReviveMyRide 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, these sorts of problems can be really difficult to diagnose! Shocks would have been my immediate answer as a first option but you say you have done them. When i replaced my front ARB's the symptoms were excessive body roll, i wasn't noticing any excessive bumps. However, a while ago, I was experiencing the same problem as you and I resolved it by replacing the two large bushes in the front lower control arms. I include a link to one here just to confirm visually the part I am talking about, it may not be the exact part number for your car. mbspecialist.com/mercedes_webcatalog/item/2023305107B/ Just be careful because you could end up on a wild goose chase and spend quite a bit of money replacing parts. If you can find a solid recommendation for an experienced and honest garage / mechanic, sometimes it can be worth paying for 1/2 hr of their time for them to check it over on their ramps and point you in the right direction. Hope that helps! Phil

But if you want to check for your exact car, here is the free resource that I use to check Mercedes part numbers: nemigaparts.com/cat_spares/epc/mercedes/1/209/ All you have to do is: Select your car (I selected “209” for my CLK), then the model (I selected “320cdi”) and then select “SPRINGS, SUSPENSION AND HYDRAULIC SYSTEM”. Hi, if you buy the power flex bushes, you will never need to change them again, they are that good! However, if shipping, import duties are going to be really expensive, then the other option is a new anti roll bar from Mercedes that comes complete with new bushes (but they will be standard rubber ones). Not sure how this will compare on price. There is an alternative to Powerflex called Siberian bushings. I haven’t used them but they are a poly bush as well and should also be extremely durable. Hi Dave, I am aware of two major suppliers of poly urethane bushes (Siberian Bushings and Power Flex). Unfortunately, neither one of them is listing bushes for your car, I'm afraid it is a little more rare and they tend to focus on the more mainstream models. Unfortunately, it looks like you may need to replace your whole antiroll bar and it will come with new bushes molded onto it. There are a few different models of of the w218 350, so I wasn't exactly sure which one yours was but if you go to this site, nemigaparts.com/cat_spares/epc/mercedes/1/218/ select your model and then click "front suspension" you will be able to get the part number for the bar/bush. I recommend that you double check it with Mercedes or elsewhere. Also, make sure you get a price from Mercedes as well as elsewhere, they can often be surprisingly competitive on price! Hope this helps! Thanks, Phil

How much did you tighten the torx bolts too ?
@ReviveMyRide
@ReviveMyRide 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I usually do use torque setting but in this case, the bolts were fairly corroded and so I had to clean them up and apply copper grease to them (I was worried they might shear off when tightening). As a result, the torque settings wasn't as relevant (usually torque settings are for clean threads), so I just got them nice and tight using experience regarding how tight. You will notice in the video that on the ratchet , I am holding it quite near the head so that I'm not using full leverage. If you want a rough guide, then normally an M6 bolt made of grade 10.9 steel is around 15Nm, an 8mm bolt would be about 35Nm but if you are concerned, I recommend that you look for a shop manual or ask on a Merc forum to obtain the torque values. Sorry, I don't have access to one. Hope that helps. Thanks, Phil

For some reason my brackets keep falling off even wen I have it tighten wit the screws. Any idea what can b going wrong ?
@ReviveMyRide
@ReviveMyRide Жыл бұрын
Hi, do the screws fall back out or does the bracket slide off of the new bush? If the screws just fall back out, then the bolt holes may be stripped. It will be a lot of messing around but you would need to drill the hole to the next size up and use a "tap" to cut a thread for the larger bolt. Sorry, I've no idea of your level of knowledge / experience but if you need to know more about how to do it, here is a good vid: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLxkm8tlx7Dckmg.html If the bracket keeps sliding off of the new bush, then it could be you have the wrong bush. The bracket has a profile / contour on the inside that is designed to match the bush and they fit together to prevent the bracket from sliding off. I talk about it at 03:50 in the video, so might be worth rewatching that section. Hope that helps!

Yes, you should be able to if you can find the Poly Urethane bushes. Power flex are a good place to check but there are other manufacturers out there. You can’t use a part number because the part number is usually for the whole bar with bushes but if you measure the bar and check the shape of the bushes as shown in the vid then you should be ok! Hopefully the after market companies make bushes for your car, but you are running quite a rare Merc there! Hope that helps, thanks, Phil

Hi @thjn23 the car in the video 2007 CLK but they share the same underpinnings as the C class, so should be exactly the same as your car. @@thjn23 Thanks for the update, sounds like you did a good job. As long as they were a snug fit and stay in the bracket, I think they will be fine. 👍

What torque setting did you use?
@ReviveMyRide
@ReviveMyRide 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I don't the workshop manual for this car but from a search on Merc forum's it seems the consensus is 30 ft/lbs or 40Nm. However, just be aware of the following: The bolts on the bracket are quite long and if the bolts themselves or the hole they are screwing up into are corroded, then this can cause the bolt to be tight to screw back in. Try to get them as clean as you can (I often use a bit of copper grease) otherwise the torque wrench can "click" but the bolt isn't fully tightened. On my car, when I had finished tightening the bolt, the bush bracket touched the car chassis / cross member at either side, there shouldn't be a gap. Hope this helps!

How do you know when its time to replace them?
@ReviveMyRide
@ReviveMyRide Жыл бұрын
In my case, the bushes were very worn. The wear will be on the inner surface of the bush where it touches the antiroll bar. If you can see any gap at all, where the ARB meets the bush, even the thickness of a fingernail, then they are done. Check out this forum thread which also has some embedded pictures. mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w212/672856-sway-bar-bushing.html#&gid=1&pid=3 This one is worn. Also if the rubber looks like it has started to denature or crack, that is often a sign too. Hope that helps!

The bolts are notorious for snapping in the sub frame, worth putting some penetrating oil on prior to removal. I speak from experience.

Yes, I agree, the bolts were incredibly tight and I really had to take my time with them. Also, they are really long! Cheers, Phil

Is this process the same on w204?
@ReviveMyRide
@ReviveMyRide 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm pretty sure it is! Just checked on Real OEM and there is only one part number for the anti roll bar and it includes the bushes. Therefore, if you wanted to do bushes only, you would need to follow the process as detailed in the video. However, Powerflex UK isn't listing front ARB bushes for the W204, so it would be a case of finding some first! Thanks, Phil

Hi, the bar on my car is 22mm diameter and when I search that up on the Powerflex website, then it is this one: www.powerflex.co.uk/product-details/Front+Anti+Roll+Bar+Inner+Bush+22mm/13362.html BUT I highly recommend that you measure the bar on your car as shown in the video at 01:46 in the video. Hope that helps! If you have any other questions, please ask and I will help if I can!

Is it the same process for w204?
@ReviveMyRide
@ReviveMyRide 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I can confirm that the ARB bush arrangement is the same, in that the bush is molded to the bar. However, it is a different bush to the W203 / C209 and checking with Powerflex, it doesn't look like they are selling the bushes separately yet. Sorry, on the forums, owners are saying they are having to replace the entire bar (which comes complete with new bushes) at a cost of circa £140 :-( You can read about it here: forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/index.php?threads/w204-replacement-anti-roll-bar-bushes.158661/ Thanks, Phil

Just to add to my previous comment: Just as an option, in one of the comments below, a chap called @Michael Mayfield used a company called Siberian bushings (based in the US by the looks of it). I haven't used these before and they're not cheap but it looks like they make a front ARB bush for the W204. Here is their Ebay listing, if you decide to go with them, you will need to check the shape of your existing bush and the bar diameter to make sure they will fit. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154058924456?hash=item23dea0a1a8:g:s3oAAOSwytxfRReK Thanks, Phil
