What am I talking about?
My topic is the KE-Jetronic injection system which I try to demystify as much as I can.
For all of you to understand the system in brief - Developed in 1973 and being mounted into cars up to 1993 as it went in history. But why these to letters!?(KE) K(from German "kontinuierliche Einspritzung" meaning continuos injection, without interruption) the MECHANICAL injection system on which the fuel starts flowing from the fuel tank sucked by the FUEL PUMP and delivered to the FUEL DISTRIBUTOR which sends fuel to the INJECTORS while the majority of it flows through the FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR through its return line back to the fuel tank again. The letter E(elektronische Gemischanpassung/electronically controlled mixture adaptation) has to mark the electronic sensors (the developement starting from early eighties) which had to inform the ECU about the current state of the engine so that the ECU(Electronic Control Unit) then could create current signal in mA(miliampers) and send it to four crucial components for the system - the EHA(the electro-hydraulic actuator, a unit consisting of a magnet, an electromagnet and a baffle plate) which had to fine tune the engine in each of its phases, the ICV(the idle control valve), the unit which was predicted for the engines perfect idle, the X11(the diagnostic socket) where the duty cycle(the ideal mixture) was adjusted and the X11/4(the code reader) - the socket which from any codes were read if present using an OBD1 scanner.
An extraordinary injection system which could be fully repaired in your own garage using a multimeter and a pressure gauge only for its fine tuning, together with some common tools.

When this guy does not have the experience of repairing 10 cars in the past then he could start with this one. I think the best way to learn is to disassemble an old car put it together again. And after lets see if it works. And I also believe that an overhaul of an engine in Kenya is far not as expensive like here in Serbia. I would give him a try.

I m from tripoli libya I have essue with my mercedes r107 450sl its running good but I smell a gasoline out of the muffler seems like Fule and air are not tuned. Can you please give me advice to solve this problem. Thanks again

Okay. So we are in the world of K-Jetronic. The best way would be to go to the inspection and to let them measure your exhaust gases. The tolerance on these models is up to 2%CO. If you have still the protection screw remove it and you will get to the allen 3mm. There you set the fuel/air ratio. Try to go a bit counterclockwise. If the engine starts "Dying" then increase a bit the RPM on the idle control valve by turning it counterclockwise. It's like a faucet - the more you turn counterclockwise, the more you increase the water flow and vice versa. So, you will have to be doing it parallel. This goes of course if your warm up regulator within the specs. Greetings from Serbia, Ivica FyM

I don't know what kind of help the guy from Kenya requested but unless he actually wants you to physically rebuild his distributor maybe you could find time to dispatch advice, after all the guy is in Kenya. Anyways I disagree, these days is hard to find a mechanic that knows how to work on a KE distributor, even finding a Mercedes dealership willing to work on KE is difficult, Kenya got to be worse. Also indeed is possible to have piston problem ( even though since the car is in Kenya might not be a problem) but for sure he'll have a problem with the spring valves, at least one has to be in the compressed state. And one last thing , I sincerely doubt that in Kenya cars are subjected to a TUV inspection so I don't think that the guy want to "restore" the car, I think he just want to repair it and as long as it starts and drive he wouldn't care if the shock springs are shot, if the brakes squeak, there is play in the steering, wire is used to hold the bumper and so on.....

Prijatelju imam 124 230E i ima jedan problem kad ga palim treba joj dosta verglanja i poslje verglanja upali i odjednom se ugasi pa opet verglam dosta puta dok ne povuce gas koji dajem i onda tek upali radi normalno a zatim se zna odjednom u voznji ugasit vrati se samo na kontakt i stane na putu znas li sta bi moglo bit uzrok tog kvara?
