Mat's heard a lot of bad reports about the yoke steering wheel included in the new Tesla Model S Plaid. So, he's done what any sensible motoring journalist would do... He's bought an old Mercedes S-Class, and he's attached a yoke steering wheel so he can try it out himself!
Now, of course, this is a very important test. After all, he has a Model S Plaid on order, so he needs to determine whether he needs to cancel it or not!
Join Mat as he tries attaching the steering wheel himself, and then puts the yoke-driven Mercedes through a series of challenges!

The Yoke isn’t bad if it has a good steering ratio. But the steering ratio of the Plaid isn’t as it should be for ideal use.

Tesla kept the same lock-to-lock relation it had with a steering wheel with its steering yoke, which is braindead. the new Toyota bZ4X is supposed to have a yoke, however: 1) it’s optional 2) lock-to-lock is set “at around 150 degrees,” that means you don’t have to cross your arms while maneuvering the car.

Yokes work for planes, not for cars. They might if you didn't have to turn the wheel, eh, yoke, more than 90 degrees left or right. As wonderfully demonstrated by Mat and his helpful assistant here!

@@kaicenatclips35 their yokes are super sensitive to inputs and maneuvering doesn’t work the same when you can move in any direction in space. (Since airpanes dont have “road”) Plus the yokes can turn the airplane on a dime with not much input…since airplanes have many more “steering” devices (rudders). They have them on their tail, both wings and in their back wings… Cars only steer with their front wheels.

A yoke works if you have limited lock. That can be achieved by using a very fast steering ratio which would feel unstable when going straight or by using steer by wire technology like in the Toyota BZ4X. Tesla does neither which is why it's a shit idea.

Tesla seem determined to design their cars as if they were already completely autonomous, and that the human in the car never had to do anything. Which is pretty bloody stupid since they're no where near ready to be that reliable across the world.

On top of the yoke itself there are the tiny oddly placed turn signal and horn buttons, both things you might need in a sudden urgent situation. The ability to modify the horn to play joke sounds might seem comical only until you really need the horn to prevent a crash. Bottom line, Tesla does not take safety seriously.

the way you could turn the steering wheel with two hands is, if you want to go right you use your left hand if you want to use your right hand you go left, when you turn to any of the directions, when you want turn the steering wheel and rotate it to the direction you turn to make the wheel upside down then you use your right hand to hold that and spin it in the correct direction keep practising and you will succeed. or just use one hand

Unless the number of turns lock to lock is the same between the Merc & the Tesla this won't be worth doing. I know the Model 3 has fewer turns lock to lock than a lot of other cars but I don't know if the refresh Model S is the same.
