Harry is the best, no motor Journo cliches, gives his views straight and is steeped in experience and is wise, entertaining and instructive for all that. It’s great to ride along with Harry and Mrs Harry on these road trips.

Those new design wheels look dreadful. Look like something you'd pick up in Halfords! The original turbine wheels were stunning and suited the car much better

I still fondly remember the Top Gear SLR Challenge to Oslo challenge and I can't believe it's been summer of '05 since that first aired. It's nice to revisit this magnificent car on another high-mile journey with Harry.

You should have said you were coming up here. Harry, I'd have put the kettle on! When I saw you turn up towards Wrynose and Hardknott, I thought you were being a bit brave in that SLR. Wise choice to bail. I worked for a summer at the Motor Museum a few years ago - worth a visit.

The level of trust in Mr Metcalfe in allowing him to borrow this special car is something else. Obviously well justified. He’s that rare person: a petrol head through & through, a very capable driver and used to driving four wheeled performance vehicles of all kinds (& some off road bikes, too), plus a highly engaging and knowledgeable motoring journalist. Finally, though he is, I suppose, retired from his previous, commercial career, he’s got that boyish go get it attitude, with knobs on. Let’s imagine ourselves in a similar position. How many of us could safely drive this extraordinary SLR, yet do so in a spirited fashion? Left hand drive, sitting almost over the rear axle, monster torque, electrically modulated brakes & an automatic transmission slow by modern standards. Thanks to the Metcalfe’s for bringing us along! For a twenty year old car, to me, it doesn’t look at all dated. The paint is lickable! While the interior tan leather and suede is a little OTT for me, and my word, you don’t need to continually ask yourself what kind of engine you’re sitting behind. It would be tiring, that exhaust note. I’d have to have it equipped with a switchable exhaust, or it’d do my head it with that drone on faster roads. But almost anywhere you go, it turns heads and you just cannot ignore it, in any company. I’m a long way shy of every being able to afford one, but I confess to perusing advertisements for SL55s!

I believe this color is known as “XP green.” MSO did a 675LT in a similar spec and these are both homages to the F1GT. The wheels are part of this as well

Harry I recommend you take a road trip to Sweden this year. A 7km Swedish nordschleife has just opened on the Island off Gotland. Could be quite an interesting trip.

As a teen I youth hostelled in the Lakes and cycled over the Hardknott and Wrynose passes and really must go back as I didn't remember them being so narrow. Hugely entertaining trip in the SLR to the beautiful Lake District. What a wise decision to bail on the Hardknott Pass. We took 3 Porkers and an Aston Vantage over it last year and highly buttock clenching it was too, with several splitter scrunching moments. In a car like that precious SLR??? Nooooo 😱

Harry you took the wrong bloody pass! I was shouting at the telly What you wanted were Honister and Whinlatter Passes. Honister pass is my favourite road in England, just leave it til the evening and you'll have it to yourself. Borrowdale side is the aperitif, it's the Buttermere side that earns its place imho as England's finest driving road. Many's the evening I've spent happily scampering from Buttermere up to the slate mine and back, not seeing another road user all evening. Visibility is good, you can see the whole route once the climb begins, and potentially any other vehicle on it as you cross the prehistoric feeling scenery. Just epic Keep up the good work! Luvgav

The AMG 55 motor is a wonderful creation, one of the best motors created by them and the 5 speed automatic transmission is just perfect!

I saw your 2021 round up and just had to look at this review. I live in Devon and ran out of fuel (faulty sender unit) on Telegraph Hill outside of Exeter. Sat in the layby waiting for rescue and one of these McClaren Mercedes came up the hill at full chat! Instantly fell in love with the outrageous noise and sheer brutal punch.

I really like the road trip format for this review, & love the beautiful countryside, geology & history of the Lake District. The car wasn't too bad either, but over £50,000 for the paint alone, thats sheer madness! Makes me wonder how much it would cost to service/ maintain this supercar?!

I realized that after 3 years of watching this channel the reason why I love these videos so much is that my mother looks exactly like Harry.

These road trip videos are the best. Like the testarosa with the bromptons and the outboard or the McLaren GT from the shoot in bowland forest. It's also nice to see some of the roads I've driven and ridden playing host to such rare machinery. Cracking vid Harry!

These things sound dirty in all the right ways. I much prefer the turbine wheels but that's just a matter of opinion I suppose. I also think they have aged really well.
