In this video I show how I replaced my Bosch voltage regulator, describe common faulty symptoms, what it does and a simple performance test. The regulator is attached to the alternator.
The main symptoms of a bad voltage regulator are a no start condition, loss of car power and poor battery performance. These symptoms are often confused with a failed alternator, which is very expensive to replace and difficult to install. Most of the time this cheap $20 voltage regulator is to blame. It is considered a regular maintenance item and is meant to last 100,000 miles (160,000 km), however earlier replacement is recommended.
I didn't know it when I began the video, but I learned that my voltage regulator was soon going to fail. Luckily I changed it because the old part would likely have left me stranded!
The video and part applies and is helpful to many Mercedes-Benz including: R129 SL (300 SL, 320 SL, 500 SL, SL 600) and W124, W140, W202, W210 including models 300E, 500E, E320, S500 and C220.
Mercedes Part number: 002 154 9206
Bosch Part number: 1 987 237 075
Tools: screwdrivers, socket set
Car shown: 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300SL with engine M104.980

Appreciate the video. My voltage regulator on my 1993 300TE wore all the way down to about 1/16 inch before wasn't charging. I also had to pry the cover off breaking it off because it just wouldn't slowly pry off. My old 1991 300TE didnt have a cover. I plan on using a rubber band to hold the brushes in. Im afraid of damaging the commutator where the brushes contact. Sad thing is it is extremely hard to find a good mechanic for these cars and i always wind up doing revisional work on my car even after mechanics work on it.

Thanks for sharing. Given the age of these cars, It’s best to work on them yourself where possible. I agree that finding a good mechanic is difficult and many times you’ll need to do the investigating and troubleshooting and provide the mechanic direction in terms of parts that need replacing or checking. Using an elastic band for the voltage regulator works well.

I was able to get it on without anything attached. If I have no time to work on my car I just drop my parts in a box to the mechanic. It's a 50% chance the parts they get are for 4 matic instead of Base model. Even Vin number ordering is tricky.

Labor costs twice as much to change the VR compared to the entire alternator. Crazy. Mine is a 2005 w211.

Val, I enjoy your videos. Do you have one on the central locking system pump for a 1990 500 SL? Thanks.

What you point to at the 4:50 point in the video is not a diode. That is a resistor.
@HandyVal
@HandyVal Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the clarification. Yes I am pointing to a resistor. Depending on the voltage regulator, they consist of resistors and diodes.

is this the same part for a 92 500sl?
@HandyVal
@HandyVal Жыл бұрын
The part number for the 92 500SL is 002 154 7906. (Always check fitment with your parts provider, as an additional check) Bosch makes it. The part number is different from what I show in the video, as the video is on a 300SL. Interestingly, the part shown in the video for the 300SL, fits the 500SLs from 1993 onwards, but not the 1990 to 1992 500SLs.
