It's easier to get parts for a W126 chassis versus a later model because there's a demand for those parts. The word is out that the W123, W126 and W201 are amazingly strong cars. They were built at a time when everything on those cars were designed to be rebuilt/fixed, not thrown away. These other KZfaqrs can't fathom this concept because they don't know Mercedes Benzs like Pierre. Knowledge versus video clicks.

Finally! Someone who knows what the hell they're talking about when it comes to Mercedes-Benz. W123, W124 and W126 chassis cars are still -- even to this day -- the best cars on the road (and the Lexus LS cars, too) and the most reliable, durable and dependable vehicles EVER MADE. We're talking about cars made of STEEL. NOT PLASTIC. We're also talking about cars with standard safety features that don't appear on other manufacturers' cars for almost a decade later: ABS. SRS airbags. Traction control. And the list goes on. Diesel engines last millions of miles...LITERALLY. But the gas engines like the M104 and M119 last 400,000+ miles just as easily. Parts and labor are a fraction of the cost of the newer cars, however, the REAL VALUE is in the number of parts available in JUNKYARDS FOR pennies on the dollar. A vacuum pump for a W123 turbo diesel in effectively like new condition for $80? Yes!!! That's right! Listening to Scotty -- a self described, so-called "expert" -- bashing Lexus LS430 engines and Mercedes-Benz M119 and M113 engines just makes me wonder why anyone listens to the guy AT ALL???

The classic cars are what Mercedes made their reputation on. New Benz are pretty much junk that will not last a dozen years. When there are no more 20 year old Benz on the road, but the 40 year old stuff is still driven, maybe then we will see that at one time it really was The Best or Nothing.
@zenman12303 жыл бұрын
I fully agree to what has been said, from experience. I own a 2000, S430, purchased at 99K miles. I recently purchased a 1989 300SE with 164K miles for $2K. The S430 is rusting badly in spite of very good care. It has "consumed" $10K in repairs in the two years of ownership. The air suspension alone cost $7K to replace. What is interesting is that OEM replacement parts for the air ride would have cost me more than twice as much; PLUS, Mercedes would only warranty the parts for ONE YEAR. My mechanic bought rebuilt parts that have a lifetime warranty that is transferable. The SE by comparison has no body rust and only faded clear coat on the roof, hood and trunk deck. Everything works, including the original AM/FM radio. The differences in build quality, fit, finish, and materials used is striking when viewing both cars side by side. Pierre is correct, Mercedes Benz lost their quality edge and reputation soon after the 1990's. They will never recover.

Enjoyed my little W201. Easy to fix and maintain, and was only due to a major change in my living arrangements that I had to say goodbye and buy something new...but I still have a classic V12 car from a British manufacturer tucked away for sunny weekend drives. Just discovered your channel this weekend; great work! Frankly I'm an English car guy, but I totally agree about classic cars. I've got a Triumph TR-6 (the third one I've owned over the decades) and a Jaguar XJ6. I take great enjoyment working on them, driving them, or even just sitting in them in the garage with a drink. I paid pennies for them compared to a modern car, and in spite of the money I've put into parts (I don't have to pay labor, because they are simple enough that the average guy and do the work), I'm still light years ahead of the money I would have spend on a 40K a new car (and not have gotten a car as nearly as cool as what I have now).

Great rant, Pierre! While I'm waiting for circumstances to change something I can get a nice 240D, I'm happy to keep driving my '05 C240 4Matic, but I'll also say that strut mounts are $360 a side in Canadian pesos for the parts. I loved the bit about paying more than the car is worth... My wife is after me about that and I told her it's still the cheapest car we've got! Keep up the great work!

Really comes down to 3 things, $$, maintenance, and what you want. As you well note in your videos, some are more $$ and trouble than they are worth. Some don't appeal to your driving style. And then some have modern inconveniences which most of us don't like. I have a nice 2002 E320 Classic Sedan with leather interior which meets our needs for a comfortable ride/drive. We have a Chevy beater for shopping and parking lots. Our Merc is perfect for any road trip on highway or interstate. At 90K miles it still rides, drives, and performs like any new car. And the parts cost for occasional maintenance is very reasonable. Plus we don't lose a penny on depreciation! The Merc feels like I am riding in style from the moment we pull out of the driveway. Oh, did I mention that it performs perfectly when you need to pass on a 2 lane road? Always fun to drive. Fahrvergnugen!

I personally drive a new Benz, yet I am looking always out for the old W123 and 124 models. Pierre has such common sense about costs and depreciation of new/nearly new vs old but the comment that most resonates with me is about new cars is 'they all look the same to me' and thats why I only drive W116 and W123's. Here is an example of economy- W123 280ce purchased 2009 for £1500 and spent £4000 over 13 years and now the car is worth £8000 and most importantly, its been my daily car and never ever let me down and people comment on it all the time (even a Astonmartin DB9 owner told me how pretty he thought it was!). big facts. got a car payment when I was 21 had it for 4yrs and was reposessed. after the smoke cleared I checked my documents they charged me 22k flat upfront for a 12k USED car that was 5 years old. Sure had under 75k but insurances are liars. dont buy nothing you cant buy in full. because youll pay more for not owning it then you would for parts to fix it. Thats real talk. I hate the roll that I got but I fell inlove with it, and felt a personal endeavor I had to accomplish by achieving its functionality. Ive invested so much money this past year on working on this car and I would love if there was any infornation you could offer reguarding the m111 engines with even maybe matinence or anything at all even little tips anything is appreciated. "that repair will cost more than the car is worth..." Never be afraid to spend on your car more than it is worth - even if that is only filling the gas tank all the way to the top. You do have to keep on top of maintenance with an older car - yes that's true but the reward of having something that's unique is great. I have a'73 220D and an '88 300SEL and have never been unable to find parts including some unusual ones (unusual to replace) like the parking break pedal assembly (which cracked after 30 years of stress).

The older Mercedes, though well built, don't have a fraction of the performance of the E55 W211. The handling, braking, comfort and safety are also exceptional in the W211, (thanks in part to advanced electronics). There are valid reasons on both sides...you have to remember most people don' know what points are in the ignition system. Let's face it chances of 30/40 year old car breaking down are greater than a more modern car.Also they drive and ride differently. Guess choose what suits.

Hi Pierre! I need some help? I have a 1990 230ce w124, the car misfires and on acceleration will hesitate to accelerate. At first I thought it was spark but after replacing the plugs, leads, cap and coil it’s still the same, I also swapped the fuel distributor and metering head. Any ideas? Thanks!

I really think that the w126 is the best car that we can buy. If we do not have the to buy a Grosser or a Gullwing, what is normal, the 126 needs to be our choice.

How do you feel about E300 diesels? Are some better than others?

I watch Hoovies, Car Wizard and Scotty. I specifically watched the Mercedes Benz episodes. And yes Scotty has started to acknowledge some of the better Mercedes models. They have valid points and so do you. I made the misake of buying an old 85 BMW 5 series. I did not take it to a qualified BMW mechanic knowledgeable enough to work on it. After taking it to no less than three BMW shops and two BMW guru's. Each one fixed some aspect of the car but none of them could do it all or had the time as i don't work on my own cars. The main issue was the way it ran due to a former owner monkeying around with the wiring. But it was too far gone. I've always like Mercedes Benz cars and this time i'm am only looking at Mercedes Benz that are not too old but not new either. I like the 2014 naturally aspirated e350 and notice the w212 c207 is being favored at the moment. But i also like the w202. The parts for some reason and much more resonably priced. I am also checking parts on Partsgeek, Pelican and FCP Euro. I did own a 01 c320 bought in 08 which had been in an accident i later found out. The first issue was cracked gas canisters located under the rear seats. It happened twice because there are two. Each time costing almost $500.00. The worst issue was the battery drain issue, other than that it drove beautifully and was quieter than my girls 2018 Mazda6.
