Mercruiser 5.7 2(j) - Adjusting Idle (Fix Spark First; See Description)

2 жыл бұрынIn this video I show how to adjust the throttle cable on a Mercruiser 5.7 with 2 barrel carburetor. If the idle speed is too fast you remove the throttle cable and adjust the idle speed screw. You then adjust the throttle cable with enough slack to allow the throttle to close against the idle speed screw.
Before adjusting the idle speed screw and throttle linkage you should first fix your spark system. I sell kits to replace the failing Mercruiser Thunderbolt ignition systems with GMs Delco EST ignition system. This is a GM marine system found on VOLVO PENTA GM engines from the factory. I had to come back a second time now years later to re-learn where the mixture screw is :). Just got my boat back from the mechanic after a major overhaul and the idle was a tiny bit too low and the engine felt like it was loading up at idle as well. Going to apply your fixes after I burn out some of the older gas still in it and see if it helps. Otherwise she's running like a top! Thanks again!

Hi, I have a 1989 omc cobra and the sifting is either good or terrible and it gets stuck in forwards and is impossible to get out. I pull so hard on the throttle back sometimes it skips over neutral and goes into reverse. I think the idle is preventing the outdrive from shifting. Can you help with this?

How can you put a vacuum gauge on a boat motor. I cant find anywhere to put my vaccum gauge on my 1991 4.3L also how or does the timing factor into idle speed?

There usually isn’t a fitting to connect a vacuum gauge to. If you really want to connect one you have to tee into the pcv hose. You must set the timing to factory spec before adjusting idle speed but you also are supposed to set the idle speed before setting timing. Confusing right? Adjust idle to whatever the timing chart says as best you can and then set timing. You may have to go through it a couple times to get it right.

So what if my cable is adjusted all the way but the cable is still short meaning its not closing all the way so it can iddle properly, once I throtte up it does not bring back to iddle all the way, but If i push it down with my finger in the carburator a little more then it does, is there suppose to be any play in the cable end? mine does have some so I'm wondering if that's why its not pushing it all the way back once we go back to neutral.

Remove cable from throttle completely. Close throttle lever with hand until it hits idle speed screw. Adjust screw as necessary to get proper idle speed. If it idles properly without cable attached and no adjusting of cable will let it idle the same way then cable is either too tight or worn out.

i have a 1981 renken its a gm 2.5L 4 cylinder i can not get it to idle When I go to put it in neutral it just dies and whenever I try to take off I've gotta put it in gear just a little bit

Adjust the idle speed to 800 rpm with it in gear. Then adjust the idle mixture for smoothest operation.

My guess would be your choke is set too tight and takes too long to open up.

Where do you set the idle mixture screw at a rebuild?

Halfway between the two extremes where it stumbles. Other method is to adjust for best idle vacuum using a vacuum gauge.

I have 2005 Bayliner with a 3.0 Mercruiser. Replaced the Carburetor and fuel filter, both new. It idles great, but I eve i get above 3500 rpm the engine back fires and bogs down. Downs get to full speed. Should I move on to check spark plugs or fuel pump ?

Backfiring is a sign of a lean condition or leaking valves. Check for obstructions in the fuel line from tank to fuel pump but yes the fuel pump is suspect.

What does 4.3 mercruiser piston ring gap need to be

It depends on the piston. Silvolites tell you in the instructions what the gap should be. What kind of oil goes in the speedometer filter gearbox valve? Yea... Stupid question. Just like asking about piston ring gaps on a carburetor video.
